Opis:
The following paper is a recollection of a series of articles by Tadeusz Kudliński, published in ”Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny” (1936–37). “Teatralne mielizny” were very popular with readers, especially young playwrights, supported by the critic. The articles written by the Cracow „teatrał” (theatre man) aroused a heated discussion in the press, and the initiative to create Studio 39 can be regarded as its aftermath. Contrary to previous assurances concerning the final conclusion of the ”sandback” dispute, Kudliński took up the topic again nine months after the publication of the last part of the series, and his text “Przemówił dziad do obrazu” provoked the response by Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński. Thus, the whole discussion on the articles, as well as the theatre initiative brought to life by their soul, ends with three polemical texts, published in press, whose main character has, unexpectedly, become the hero of an old Polish proverb.

Opis:
The article describes cultural life in Kielce at the threshold of independence. The local theatre played a prominent role at that time, since it was the only professional scene on which the Regency Council’s manifest was read. After this event the institution had its name changed into the Polish Theatre. The directors in those days were struggling with financial and logistical problems, lack of permanent crew, and even the outbreak of typhus. The history of the theater is described in the context of provincial, poor and clerical town, in which the intelligentsia accounted for a small percentage of the population. The audience wanted some entertainment both from the theatre and the expanding world of the cinema. Therefore, the creators were trying to meet those expectations through productions based on comedy and operetta. The local amateur theatre was the only group involved in politics, staging several patriotic plays. The conclusions of the article are based on the materials published in ”Gazeta Kielecka”, a local newspaper of that time, and collections available in the branch of National Archive in Kielce (unfortunately, no documents have been preserved in Żeromski Theater), as well as the research done by regional historians. Year 1918 turned out to be just a glimpse in the long process of changing the mentality of local community. It was just the first step to rebuild its national identity.

This paper presents the period of artistic activity of Waldemar Krygier in Nowa Huta. Krygier was a director and manager of the Ludowy Theatre from 1971–1974 and before that time he founded a famous student’s theatre, Studio 38, and also cooperated with Jerzy Grotowski. The author briefly analyses those performances by Krygier which became interesting for theatre critics, especially Biesy – his greatest theatrical achievement. As a manager and director, he ambitiously searched for the repertoire. During his term, the stage Nurt 71 was created – an interesting niche initiative.

Opis:
Zofia and Władysław Jarema – the founders of the Groteska Theatre – from the beginning of their artitistic work in Krakow distanced themselves from perceiving the theatre of dolls as exclusively children-oriented. By gathering around themselves a group of distinguished artists, they consistently and reasonably built up the repertoire and Groteska stage for the adult audience. In their search, they included Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, Sławomir Mrożek, and Tadeusz Różewicz. This paper is an attempt at analysing and reconstructing the performance of Kartoteka (a drama by Różewicz), which was staged in Groteska Theatre (interpretation by Zofia Jarema, stage design by Kazimierz Mikulski) a few months after its Warsaw preview in the Drama Theatre. The author of the paper also discusses the type of influence which this performance and the Jaremas’ activity in general had on the contemporary theatre of dolls.

review
Opis:
Jerzy Ronard Bujański was the first director of the Old Theatre after the Second World War (from the end of January to August 1945). The article presents turbulent beginnings of this management (the war was still in progress). Besides, the first premiere of the Old Theatre – Mąż doskonały by Jerzy Zawieyski – directed by Bujański, stage design by Andrzej Pronaszko. This performance referred to the character of Job from the Old Testament and was related to the Warsaw Uprising context. This show was one of the most important artistic events of the first season after the war. Next to the Old Theatre, Bujański established the Studio, which educated about one hundred people. The teachers included: Juliusz Osterwa and Tadeusz Kantor, while the students were, for example Tadeusz Łomnicki, Halina Mikołajska, Andrzej Hiolski, Kazimierz Mikulski and Jerzy Nowosielski. In August 1945, Jerzy Ronard Bujański was dismissed as a result of a conflict with the city authorities. However, during the time of his management, the theatre gained a high artistic position.

Opis:
The article presents the forms of repetition in the creation and reception of Tadeusz Kantor’s performances. Krakow cellars, Kantor’s home in Wielopole and school class in Bielkowo near Łazy in Pomerania connect here the topic of affective searching and finding sources of identity and memory. The process may refer to both the artist and the viewer, seeking in the memory, art and landscape the traces of himself, recorded in the past and projected onto the surroundings. The author’s discovery of the interiors of the cellars under the floor of the house in Wielopole, similar to the Krzysztofory cellars in Krakow where Kantor conducted the rehearsals of the famous The Dead Class, leads to the conclusion that the preexisting in Wielopole under the floor of a childhood room the space of Kantor’s play can be the source of director’s affective repetition. With the use of the repetition mechanism, numerous further artistic discoveries and meetings of the artist with the self and visions of his future performances have been made. The facilitation of this process for viewers of exhibitions and to the recipients of art, both in Bielkowo and Wielopole, seems to be the inclusion of another tool in theatrical and artistic education.

In my article I make an assumption that theatre was a crucial part of Lucjan Rydel artistic work. He worked in the theatre and for the theatre as a playwright, theatre critic, director, literary director, lecturer in theatre school, member of theatre committee, theatre producer and director of a city theatre. It is almost impossible to describe the whole range of Rydel’s professions. However, a deep analysis would reveal his different faces of this talented man. In this article I focus on the work of Rydel as a theatre practitioner, mainly on staging his own dramatic works. I claim that he had a deep knowledge of actors’ craft and skills, of staging methods and styles. I hope that thesis included in the article will encourage theatre historians to further research

Opis:
The first text (Teatralne przewidywania, ”Miesięcznik Literacki” 1942) concerns mainly the theatre, while the second one (O cyrkulacji piękna, „Tygodnik Powszechny” 1945) basically relates to cultural issues. They complement each other. Due to the common motif of social perception of creative work, they are significant for a more general reflection upon socialartistic phenomena in the collective life of a given society. The reality of war and occupation are not directly visible in Kudlinski’s views, as he emphasised, above all, the ideologicalorganisational aspect of theatrical life in the upcoming years. Taking into consideration folk theatre, professional and artistic-amateur theatre, he was convinced that they should be somehow combined, but remaining distinct. He regarded this option as a potential implementation of ”the idea of harmonious circulation of beauty by Norwid”. From this perspective, restoring value to folk art corresponds to the concept of circulation of artistic phenomena and understanding creation as «encouraging one another to work», and as «a flag on the tower of man’s work», stressed by the author of Promethidion, That is how Kudliński turned his work into a kind of art manifesto in the predictable realityof postwar years.

Opis:
'Psie serce' (1983), 'Mały bies' (1985), 'Oni' (1985) and 'Republika marzeń' (1987) are the four very important performances directed by Rudolf Zioło in Krakow. They clearly mark the scope of both formal and thematic search in the early period of the artist’s work. The literary prototype that Zioło is faithful to, becomes only a pretext for discussion with the audience about the surrounding reality and social inequalities, as well as the mechanisms behind evil. According to the reviews which have been preserved, Zioło’s performances made in Krakow in the period 1983–1989, were usually received enthusiastically and evoked a lot of emotions. His skill for building a deep psychological motivation of characters and constructing stage activities on the basis of an in-depth analysis will be a distinguishing feature of Zioło’s theatre for many years. Additionally, a strong stage realism, strengthened by scenographic solutions, will be a starting point of a grotesque, deviation and talking about difficult life situations and humanity. In his opinion, it is only the theatre after 1989 that becomes liberated from alternative functions.

Opis:
Andrzej Wirth, a 20th century Polish essayist, philosopher and theatre critic, is one of the often forgotten theatre and drama scholars in Poland, perhaps due to his long life in exile. A recognized expert in theatre studies and philosophy, he has lectured at many universities around the world, especially in the United States and Europe. He gained particular recognition as the founder and director of the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies at the University of Giessen in Germany. The aim of this article is to introduce Wirth’s personality, outline his life between cultures and highlight his importance for the development of theatre studies in Germany, as well as his great contribution to the promotion of Polish literature in Germany in the mid-20th century. Andrzej Wirth’s life was beyond borders and divisions, although with a particular attachment to the culture of his homeland and Germany; he was rooted in childhood memories and a desire for theatre as a liberated art in an age of evolving media technologies.

Opis:
The following paper is devoted to the performance of Carlo Goldoni’s comedy The Servant of Two Masters, which was staged in Teatr Ludowy (the Ludowy Theatre) in Nowa Huta. The play, which was directed by Krystyna Skuszanka, is set in the history of the Polish reception of Goldoni’s comedy. The analysis of remarks and comments, which were published by Polish reviewers who watched the play in Nowa Huta in 1957, as well as Italian reviewers who saw the performance a few months later in the Venetian Biennale, is an attempt at showing some basic discrepancies regarding the reception of the play and answering the question about the cause of such differences. In such a short form it is not possible to investigate all the intricacies of reading Goldoni in Poland in the period 50s–60s from an anti-ideological perspective, or to determine a broader historical-cultural context. The paper is only a section of in-depth research conducted by the author.

Opis:
The aim of the article is the presentation of some interesting and stimulating questions connected with the problem of eschatological codes in the Theatre of the Absurd. The main objective of this paper is to discuss the topos of Death in the Theatre of the Absurd. Because the subject has been underexplored so far, the author tries to triangulate the Theatre of the Absurd within the genre of drama first, and then moves on to the short reflection on chosen plays of Beckett and Ionesco, concentrating on the role that eschatological elements, funereal objects and eschatons play in them. The starting point of this paper could be called “eschatology of the Absurd” or “immortality deconstructed”. Meaninglessness, as the value of absolute meaning, the meaning (Sinn) and significance (Bedeutung) of Death in the Theatre of the Absurd, is also discussed. As a method of research, he proposes a short “collective phenomenological analysis”. To analyse the issue from a broad perspective, the author takes into account the relationships between the writers and their times, and refers to cultural sources, specifically the Paradox of Death in the Theatre –particularly in the Theatre of the Absurd.
