Opis:
„Nie-znajomy wróg jakiś miesza ludzkie rzeczy…”. On the 1984 celebrations of the 400th anniversary of Jan Kochanowski’s death Conferences, differing in nature and concept, of national and international scope organized in the jubilee year 1984 greatly contributed to the existing knowledge on the poet. The year brought about a long-awaited boom in conferences after the relative stagnation of 1981–1983. In light of such an affluence, the issue of editing Kochanowski’s works reflects rather poorly. In terms of publishing of source materials, the year 1984, as compared to other years of the great jubilee, was satisfactory. The main reason for that is an important publication by Maria Garbaczowa and Wacław Urban Źródła urzędowe do najbliższej rodziny Jana Kochanowskiego (Kielce, 1984). Yet, no monograph was published. A significant sign of the times of Kochanowski’s jubilee was the low circulation of books. It was in no-way proportionate to the needs. The “publishing difficulties”, which are more or less cautiously referred to in editorials, are further reflected by the release dates of post-conference materials concluding the 1984 sessions. Key words: Jan Kochanowski; funeral; anniversary; censorship; memory and literature;

Opis:
The paper is an attempt at showing – through the prism of autobiographical reflection – the location of tradition, as understood by Wilhelmina Zyndram‑Kościałkowska (1844–1926), a translator, writer and literary critic. The notion of location is understood by the author as a particular, restricted, time‑spatial reservoir of meanings, perceived in a broader perspective, that is as a component of a larger whole. The location of tradition is a segment and stage concerning a problem residuum of meanings in culture and history, as well as in the history of thought, which has been located in the space of individual biography of Kościałkowska, constructed with an old hand of the writer and placed as a component of diagnoses in her contemporaneity. The research material includes manuscripts (notebooks with memories and other types of autobiographical archives), deposited in the Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius (Lietuvos Valstybės Istorijos Archyvas). The author shows various ways of conducting dialogue by the critic with the old tradition (history, politics, culture, portraits of people, literature, art, family history) and the meaning of the location of tradition in the process of recording oneself and one’s contemporaneity by Kościałkowska.

Opis:
Two books for children about the Great War will be discussed: Bohaterski miś [Heroic teddy bear] by Bronisława Ostrowska and Five Children on the Western Front by Kate Saunders. It will be a comparative analysis. The books differ in terms of national perspective (Polish and English), but also in the time of edition – just after the war and a hundred years later. Thus, Ostrowska’s memory about the war is her own memory, whereas Saunders’ writing can be called a postmemory narrative. The aim of the paper is to answer the questions: what is similar and what is different in the two selected children’s novels about the Great War? What are the ways of transmitting memory? What do the writers want to save for new generations?

Opis:
The main purpose of the article is to present the literary output of Andrea Tompa, using her debut collection entitled Dom kata as an example. In her work, the Hungarian writer uses her creative potential connected with the experiences of growing up in a discriminated national minority in Romania in the 1980s. In the paper, I demonstrate how the history of the area and biography intertwine in the literary transformation of experience in a quasi‑autobiographical story about entering adulthood. In Andrea Tompa’s work, one can see how the geo‑cultural experience has an impact on both the way the story is constructed and the narrative strategies applied, as well as its influence on the reception of the work among readers. The trauma of the regime and exclusion associated with Romania in the second half of the 20th century is conveyed by means of a hybrid form and fragmented narratives. This unique combination that makes up the book of the Hungarian writer provides an inspiring material for literary research, both from the perspective of memory studies and the poetics of experience. As for the way of constructing the story, which is hard to categorize according to strict genre classifications, it only enlivens the reception.
