    The reserves situated in the Łask High Plain have been established to protect natural plant associations. The aim of the present paper in to learn abiotic factors of plant habitats in the Wojsławice, Jamno and Jabłecznik Reserves. The author has characterized, on the basis of specialistic literature, essential components of the Łask High Plain epigeosphera which constitutes a background of the analysed areas. Field researches have provided materials to characterize spatial differentiation of epigeosphera constituents as well as to distinguish and characterize geocomplex types of reserve grounds.

    For nature reserves to perform effectively their protective function, and especially as regards conservation of plant gene resources, it is necessary to improve constantly methods of plant conservation in reserves. The first condition here is creation of a rational network of reserves, the second — new forms and technique of conservation activities, and the third — betterment of the organizational system in nature protection.

    Conservation of the plant cover in reserves is a part of a wide range of problems connected of the biosphere resources against destruction. An important role in this area should be played by botanists and ecologists. The present article provides information about initiatives — mainly international conferences — devoted to protection of plant species against extinction, and it gives a review of floristic and phytosociological studies that might contribute to better description of reserves and determination of recommendations concerning active protection of plants and plant communities.

    In Poland, there are 115 floristic reserves, the task of which is to protect natural habitats of the rarest species belonging to the native flora. The authoress discusses the types of these reserves, more important species being an object of protection within reserves, experience and failures in conservation attempts, and puts forward propositions concerning improvements in organization of conservation activities.

    From 1979 to 1981 investigations of breeding birds communities were conducted in four oak-hornbeam reserves situated in Pilica Forest. In the „Błogie” and „Gaik” reserves the abundance of breeding birds was determined by using mapping technique in two subsequent breeding seasons. A total of 66 breeding bird species within the area of this reserves was recorded. The highest number 61 species was found in the „Błogie” reserve and lower number 48, 44 and 31 in the „Jeleń”, „Gaik” and „Spała” reserves respectively. The density of pairs ranged from 92 to 122 per 10 ha. The group of dominant species always consisted of five bird species: Sturnus vulgaris, Fringilla coelebs, Erithacus rubecula, Phylloscopus sibilatrix, Parus major.

    An analysis has been performed on spatial distribution of vascular flora in 90 nature reserv es in the Central Poland. A detailed chorological analysis encompassed 75 species of plants being threatened in the Polish flora (V), rare species in Poland (R), rare on the lowland (RL), rare in a given region, and species being legally protected. There have been also determined possibilities of survival of forest, peatbogs, grasslands and others flora in reserves.

    An unexpected and uncontrollable succession of vegetation in national parks and reserves causes the impoverishment of a gene pool of plants. This process has been observed mainly in seminatural communities and distorted natural phytocoenoses. A programme of practical endeavours should be based on a conscious management of the succession. It has to take into account the entire caryologic, ecological and sociologic variability of each species as well as to lean on a thorough study of a degree of naturalness and dynamics of the communities in which the species exist.

    A basic task of forest reserves, apart from conservation of gene resources of the entire flora and fauna, is great care taken to preserve gene pools of native tree species. In strict reserves forest succession in its striving for climax eliminates admixed tre species. It is only in partially protected reserves that protected tree species belong to admixed ones may be preserved through application of renovating cutting down of trees.

An enlargement of the area of four already exsisting reserves is also expected.
