    This article presents a variety of press genres, as well as the issues which are tackled in funeral magazines. On the Polish niche press market, there are three periodicals published regularly: ‘Memento’, ‘Kultura Pogrzebu’ and ‘Biuletyn Polskiej Izby Pogrzebowej’. Their target readers are people engaged in the funeral business. The typical reporting genres used in such papers are: information or reports from trade meetings, or their combinations. The main areas of interest are: the law, the firm, the trade organization, history and funeral customs. This publication also addresses the characteristics of the language and style used. These magazines serve several purposes such as informing, creating opinion forums, helping in solving difficult problems, creating a trade forum so as to integrate the funeral society.

    This article centres around the problems connected with wonders, miracles and fairy tale themes in Branki w jasyrze, a nineteenth century novel written by Jadwiga Łuszczewska (pen name. Deotyma). This paper begins with biographical information about Deotyma’s family life, upbringing and its influence on her future career; reception of her charismatic personality and writing; and finally about her attitude to the employment of fantasy motives in literature. The main aim of this article is to investigate different types of miraculous events that take place in Branki w jasyrze. Those phenomena derive from various cultural and artistic frameworks: medieval hagiography, traditional folk fairy tale and primitive beliefs connected with Mongolian shamanism. In fact, this diversity has its purpose: Łuszczewska gathered all kinds of wonders to reveal the unity of people’s transcendental apprehensions.

    This article addresses the cases of criminal poisonings of men performed by women in the 19th century. This theme was not popular in crime novels because evidence was established in chemical laboratories rather than by detectives. Daily newspapers, as well as medical and court press in the 19th century, frequently commented on poisoning trials. Analyses show that the most frequent cases concerned unhappily married wives. The women were mistreated by their husbands, and the law did not allow them to divorce them. The poisoning of the husband was a rebellion and a call for the right to freedom. Crime columns depicted the real-life events drastically, whereas literature depicted the same cases in a moderate way.
    Artykuł omawia przypadki zbrodniczego otrucia mężczyzn przez kobiety w XIX wieku. Motyw był niepopularny w powieści kryminalnej, ponieważ dowody zbrodni ustalały laboratoria chemiczne a nie detektywi. Pras codzienna, medyczna i sądowa w wieku XIX często omawiała procesy o otrucie. Analiza wykazała, że najczęściej były to przypadki żon, które były nieszczęśliwe w małżeństwach. Kobiety były krzywdzone przez mężów, a prawo uniemożliwiało rozwody. Otrucie męża było buntem i wołaniem o prawo do wolności. Kroniki kryminalne pokazywały sytuacje życiowe w sposób drastyczny, literatura te same wątki opisywała w sposób stonowany.

    Opis:
    The paper analyses selected philosophical aspects of Stanisław Lem’s Solaris. I argue that there is an interesting similarity between the history of “Solarist studies” –the fictional scientific discipline depicted by Lem and cognitive science. I show that both disciplines go through similar stages as they try to describe their main subject (the planet Solaris and human consciousness respectively). In the further part of the paper, I focus on two problems identified in cognitive science that can be directly related to the themes found in Solaris: the problem of the detection of intelligence and the problem of the notion of mental representations. I finish the paper by looking at the mysterious guests that stalk the main protagonists and show that they can be understood as heuristic models that are taken into account in the theories of mind uploading.
    Artykuł bada wybrane filozoficzne aspekty powieści Solaris Stanisława Lema. Twierdzę, że zachodzi interesujące podobieństwo pomiędzy historią „solarystyki” – fikcyjnej dyscypliny naukowej opisywanej przez Lema a historią kognitywistyki. Pokazuję, że obie dyscypliny przechodziły przez podobne etapy, starając się opisać swój przedmiot (odpowiednio, planetę Solaris oraz świadomość ludzką). W dalszej części artykułu skupiam się na dwóch problemach zidentyfikowanych w kognitywistyce, które można bezpośrednio odnieść do wątków obecnych w Solaris: problemie wykrywania istot myślących oraz problemie reprezentacji umysłowych. Kończę artykuł przyglądając się tajemniczym gościom, którzy prześladują bohaterów powieści i pokazuję, że mogą oni być zinterpretowani jako modele heurystyczne rozważane w teoriach uploadu.
