The subject of the research are literary convergences that link the prose of the forgotten writer of the Positivist period, Stanisław Grudziński, with the works of Henryk Sienkiewicz, especially with his Trilogy. The comparative analysis includes Grudziński’s novels (Powieści ukraińskie, 1879–1880; Zuch dziewczyna. Powieść obyczajowa, Warszawa 1879). The confluences concern characteristic linguistic devices that render the Ukrainian flavour, fictional entanglements and literary portraits of the main and the secondary protagonists, the identical names of Zagłoba and Horpyna appearing in the texts of both writers. However, the above may be considered as manifestations of dissimilarities within the similar. Sienkiewicz may have been using the same cultural inspirations as Grudziński for the purpose of conjuring up the Ukrainian reality. It is also possible that Sienkiewicz remembered some elements of Grudziński’s prose, using those motifs and ideas which he considered worth developing. In relation to his hypothetical literary predecessor, Sienkiewicz appeared incomparably superior in terms of his artistic imagination, patterns of storytelling, creative development of his characters, as well as his mastery of language. In effect, Sienkiewicz obliterated the memory of Grudziński, who could have served as a model for his own literary works.

Henryk Sienkiewicz is not only a well-known Polish writer appreciated for his mastery of language but also a journalist – reviewer, reporter and columnist of Warsaw newspapers of the second half of the 19th century. The paper is devoted to the most important features of Sienkiewicz’s journalistic workshop: skilful use of informal Polish with its phraseological and idiomatic vocabulary and aphorisms. Sienkiewicz, also known by the pseudonym „Litwos”, masterly used syntactic means: for creation and gradual increase of tension, for using rhythm in statements and for exposing those meanings that cannot be expressed only by words. Rich syntactic constructions based on parallel structures emphasized with anaphora or contrast and frequent use of enumeration are his favorite ways of building sentences. The importance of contextual background of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s workshop implied by his upbringing, education and interests is also stressed in this paper.

Subject to analysis in this article are the poetic and the metapoetic statements made by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Even though the latter category is now and then analysed in lingustic research – as part of the analyses of Sienkiewicz’s legacy as a columnist and a reviewer – the former category remains terra incognita for language researchers. The first part of the article analyses the key concepts of Sienkiewicz’s metapoetic statements (e.g. talent [gift, talent] or prostota [simplicity]) as well as the stylistic qualities of these statements (e.g. poetic nature, emotionality). The second part of the article features a linguistic analysis of the idiostylistic qualities of Sienkiewicz’s poetic works: grammar of rhymes, selection of stylistic means (e.g. parallels and epithets) as well as his choice of the lexical stock.

This article concerns the conceptualization of speech and language in Sienkiewicz’s Trilogy. Certain methods of conceptualizing speech, language or words are timeless, they represent a durable in terms of culture, mental tissue of language. In the novel by Sienkiewicz, the conceptualization of speech and language reflects the typical for Sarmatian mentality skills and noble duties: fighting efficiency and the oratory ability. Especially strongly and permanently rooted in the Polish language is the metaphor of a dispute as war, and within it the language as a weapon, especially sword. The proper thinking in the nobility era is especially clearly reflected by the metonymic statement: prisoner–language, reflecting utilitarianism of war, and a series of farm metaphors and comparisons, such as milling with a tongue or turning the tongue as the axis of the carriage wheels. References of this type are readable even today, however they do not have now this contemporary freshness and immediacy of references, but rather seem anachronistic in the modern urban world. Durable in everyday language today is the phraseology binding language and speaking with emotion, expressing itself for example in such collocations as: bite your tongue or forget one’s tongue. Typical of nobility is also, embodied especially in the character of Onufry Zagłoba, positive valorization of noble multispeech, as a testimony of eloquence and erudition.

The paper discusses forms used by Henryk Sienkiewicz to address his sister-in-law, Jadwiga Janczewska, in his letters from 1879–1916. A special bond between the writer and the addressee (family-based, friendly, full of warmth and manly adoration), as well as the literary talent and linguistic creativity were reflected in the abundance and diversity of addressative expressions used by Henryk Sienkiewicz (about 200 lexical units). The basic group consists of unofficial (diminutive, hypocoristic and augmentative) forms of the addressee’s name, such as Dzinka, Dzinia, Dzidek, Dziduś, Dzid. The second, more numerous, group comprises affectonyms, that is intimate names, which generally are motivated by addressee’s physical or mental features, e.g. Żaba, Mgła, Kot, stworzenie, dziecko, figurka, hadziuś. The writer used some affectonyms in multiple phonetic and morphological variants, e.g. Żaba, Żabka, Żabeczka, Żabeusz, Ziaba.

Proper names should be recognized as a significant factor of a literary character and in broader perspective of bringing closer the novel problems. The main novel character, Leon Płoszowski, percepts and sense the world through the self-analysis and analysis of the reality surrounding him. Proper names above all emphasize two features: erudition and cosmopolitism of the novel character. His formation and contact through the years with high culture do not help him to put the world – both: one inside and one outside him – in order, but all of this remains a stigma in a form of association everything with art, literature, philosophy etc. It is confirmed in the novel by numerous proper names. The fact that proper names in basic for Leon Płoszowski characteristics places in the novel apply mostly to the past, causes that they form sort of „onomastic museum”.

The article discusses the selected elements of the style presented in Letters from Africa by Henryk Sienkiewicz. The analysis of the lexical-phraseological and the syntactic layers of the text demonstrates that in Letters from Africa the artistic language is consciously created and functional. Its characteristic, stylistic feature is the extensive use of colloquial language, fixed, idiomatic phrases, proverbs and proverbial expressions. Therefore, such use of lexicon and phraseology refers to the traditional trends of the Polish language, the vivid language of everyday communication. What strikes the readers is the quantitative as well as the qualitative abundance of this type of marked units of language. This verbal layer, inextricably linked with the everyday language of the Polish people, is subject to the artistic syntactic rules characteristic of the rhetorical style. The skillful combination of two stylistic features is a testimony to the high value of the text: on the one hand, simplicity and moderation in the lexical-phraseological layer; on the other hand, abundance and poetic elegance which are present mainly in the syntactic layer. Thus, Letters from Africa reflect the language of common, everyday communication in an uncommon study.

There has been presented a variety of religiously derived phrasemes and they have been analysed in order to determine a feature of style and a linguistic manner of creation of the world presented in the novel. For instance, Swedish invaders are characterized as people wandering off religion, whereas Poles emphasise their „folk” religiousness, f.e. among gentry, soldiers, servants, etc.

The authors have recognized that to create the novel’s characters, both individual and collective, Henryk Sienkiewicz willingly uses the metalinguistic statements. The analysis included nearly 50 metalinguistic statements present both in the narrative part and in the dialogs. In the center of those statements there are lexemes speech, word, language. The authors searched for the answers to two fundamental questions in what way the metalinguistic remarks:1) create the reliable, medieval reality presented in the The Knights of the Cross?2) remarks update the novel’s problems?Using the metalinguistic notes to create the historical reality of the novel was the deliberate and effective action. Thanks to it Sienkiewicz illustrates the ethnic diversity of medieval Poland inhabitants, he also shows the difficulty in communication between representatives of different nations. Thanks to metalinguistic remarks the author of a novel indicates the role of the Latin language in the former custom; he also shows the language specificity of the different society layers. Metalinguistic comments reveal the parallels between the fictional reality of the novel and the reality of the times in which Henryk Sienkiewicz lived and worked. In metalinguistic notes the clearly negative evaluation of the German language and its users is shown. The linguistic situation in the State of the Teutonic Knights, which is shown in the novel, indicates similarities to situation under Prussian rule in the nineteenth century.

The paper discusses the language exponents of emotions and evaluations in ournalistic creativity. The presented material is based on the reviews taking the form of a free column to essay printed in the years 1909–1948 in the writings devoted to a socio-political, scientific and literary life. They are integrated by a topic – a reference to the contemporary novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz titled Wiry (1910), and indirectly to the revolutionary events of 1905–1907. Among the authors of the reviews there are Polish literary historians, educators, literary critics, translators, social and political activists who not only inform about the book, interpret and evaluate its contents, but also want to shape the tastes and affect a socio-political attitude of their readers. The aim of this paper is the attempt to capture the characteristic for journalism language exponents of expression of feelings and value judgments in connection with its overarching function of exposing current facts, events, problems, from a certain point of view, with an intention to cause a specific reaction of readers. On the basis of the material analysis it can be stated that although the reviewers refer to presented phenomena in a subjective manner, they do not expose their self-sentient. If they express their feelings openly then: they hide under a fuzzy pronoun category ‛we’, mask a subjective attitude with impersonal form of the verb, describe their own idea of the feelings of others, talk about emotional states against the phenomena. An important role in the reviews is especially played by the emotionally charged vocabulary, which gives a positive or negative experience of the sender and at the same time is designed to elicit certain feelings of the recipient, for example contentment, fear, indignation. An emotional attitude of the authors to the discussed content is also revealed by the syntactic structure of interrogative and exclamation marks.

This article will explore the manner in which Henryk Sienkiewicz used detail and recurrent motifs in his descriptions of landscapes and narrative events in chosen novellas (Hania, Jamioł, Wspomnienie z Maripozy and Z pamiętnika poznańskiego nauczyciela) and two parts of the Trilogy (Ogniem i mieczem and Potop). The following will be considered in more detail: the motif of books (in Wspomnienie z Maripozy, and Z pamiętnika…), and detailed descriptions of manor houses (in the historical novels). The final aim will be to define the basic structures of Sienkiewicz’s realism of detail, and demonstrate that they form an important element of the works’ fictional universe.

The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the image of the role of the city and bourgeoisie in the seventeenth century, settled in the Trilogy of Henryk Sienkiewicz. The lexemes naming the city appear in the definitions of the various terms of space, they serve its scratching. The reader, however, must complement a spatial arrangement drawn up by the storyteller. Imaging the city is followed by the exploitation of key words, which name the elements of the architecture of the city. The lexemes specifying the residents of the city, their activities and competitions appear sporadically. Quite often H. Sienkiewicz exploits anthropomorphisation efforts and metonymy, applied to the conceptual category of the city, which allows to talk about the features and social functions of the middle class. The lexicon associated with the city shows that, seen from the perspective of a noble, is a symbol of a self-sufficient residence that fills many needs of a noble: it provides money, soldiers, goods, serves as a refuge in times of war or bad weather, can resist the invaders. A noble point of view of the narrator is also expressed in attention to a defensive function of the city and the brave or cowardly attitudes of townspeople. A full overview of the lexical resource serving the definition of the city and the bourgeoisie reveals, in addition to standard and repetitive efforts also non-standard ones, breaking stereotypes, heterogeneous and difficult to classify. It is manifested in the exis by a large group of colocations, which occur at a time. Language creation of the middle class is on the one hand firmly schematic, and surprisingly unique on the other hand.

This article concerns the nature of the pattern and extent of referring to the convention in opposition to the originality of the creator being part of a trend of historical novels. The basis of this article is a historical novel by Jacek Komuda entitled “Bohun” (Lublin 2012) juxtaposed with “Trilogy” by Henryk Sienkiewicz. The comparative analysis is based on text linguistics tools, and above all on two criteria of textuality: intentionality and intertextuality. The combination of the writing workshops of two novelists is motivated by the genre (historical novel), setting in the reality of Sarmatian Poland and source base. However, a very clear division between both texts is the understanding of literary elements in historical novel, and thus the approach to historical truth. The irony mentioned in the title can be seen in conscious opposition to the proposed by Sienkiewicz and strongly rooted in Polish readership tradition pattern of historical novel written for “spirit lifting” and thus in a negative reflection of the ideological concept of Sienkiewicz. This is done by selecting the main themes of the novel – natural history of the Polish army, a negative image of the Polish gentry and ennobling image of the Cossack. The similarity between the two texts is reflected in the language realisation. In the novel by Komuda linguistic elements common in Sienkiewicz are present, specific and reproducible, obtaining the status of so-called “winged words” repeatedly documented by lexicographers by quotes from Sienkiewicz.

The following article highlights the problem of vanity of human life. Analysis of the historical novels by Sienkiewicz explains the fragility and impermanence of heroes’ lives. An important aspect of the article is the theme of death, seventeenth-century war, pain and martyrdom of early christians.
