Opis:
Genus Serratula is known for the presence of steroid compounds which belong to the group of ecdysones. Former phytochemical works from the late sixties and early seventies indicate, in some Serratula species, the occurrence of a phenolic glycoside-arbutin. This has been confirmed in the present work through finding an α,β-arbutin anomer in Serratula quinquefolia M.B. New botanical data concerning the classification of genus Serratula suggest that the species in question should be regarded as belonging to genus Klasea (currently a section of genus Serratula). There has been an attempt to find a key to the chemical division within the taxons.

Opis:
The occurrence of syringin in eight out of ten investigated plant species of the subtribe Centaureinae (Asteraceae) was reported. The compound was isolated from aerial parts of the plants by silica gel column chromatography of methanol extracts. Contents of syringin varied from 0.001 to 0.1% of the dried plant material. Centaurea bella Trautv. appeared to be the best source of this compound (0.1% dry wt.). Syringin has been reported for the first time from these plant species.

Opis:
Visual chromatography has been employed for a preliminary identification of natural compound of a group of sesquiterpene lactones – Centaurea bella Trautv., C. crocodylium L., C. lusitanica Boiss. et Reuter, Helenium hoopesii A. Gray = Dugaldia hoopesii (A. Gray) Rydb., Stizolophus balsamita (Lam.) Cass., Zoegea baldschuanica C. Winkl., germacranes – Santolina pinnata Viv. subsp. neapolitana (Jord. et Fourr.) Guinea = S. neapolitana Jord. et Fourr. A dependence of the colour of the spots, induced by anisaldehyde reagent, on the presence of several substituents in the germacranolide ring – derivatives of partnenolide and salonitenolide – has been identified. The structures of the skeleton in the ring of sesquiterpene lactones in Helenium hoopesii can also be established by thin layer chromatography (TLC). The analysis of the chromatograms of extracts from dry and fresh Centaurea crocodylium herb has shown significant differences as for the chemical composition. Two sorts of germacranes of Santolina pinnata subsp. neapolitana display a characteristic colour of the spots.

Opis:
Riparian zones in two rivers in southern Poland were studied in terms of species composition and soil parameters in patches dominated by three knotweed taxa (Fallopia japonica, F. sachalinensis and the hybrid F. ×bohemica). The main purpose was to detect any differences in species diversity, environmental conditions and in the impact of the three Fallopia spp. on resident species. Fieldwork was conducted in spring and summer in 30 invaded plots (in total 90 subplots). It was demonstrated that vegetation dominated by particular knotweed taxa differed in response to soil pH and ammonium, nitrate, and magnesium content. Fallopia spp. (living plants and necromass) had a stronger negative impact on the cover and species diversity of the resident species in summer in comparison with spring. Vegetation patches differed significantly in species composition in relation to the knotweed taxa present. These differences may be the consequence of the differentiated biotopic requirements of Fallopia taxa and the coexisting plants, or to the different impact of the knotweed taxa on the resident species.
