Opis:
The cycle of novels The Red Wheel, one of the most significant and yet least-known works of Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, offers a profound insight into the issue of national identity and relationships between Poles and Russians. The analysis of how Solzhenitsyn depicted Poles in the cycle, in terms of their being strangers or own people, is all the more interesting for the fact that it relates to a specific point in history. Indeed, in The Red Wheel novels, Solzhenitsyn provides a detailed description of the period of decline of the multinational Russian Empire, which, by extension, was a pivotal time in the history of the Polish quest for independence.

This article deals with Poles who served in the Caucasus in the Russian troops or as civilian officials throughout almost the entire 19th century. Regardless of how the Poles came there, of their own free will, as representatives of ‟economic emigration”, or, conversely, as recruits-conscripts or prisoners, they contributed a lot to the economic and socio-cultural development of the land, which has been identified with the roots of the European civilization. While studying the biographies of such Poles, it can be noted with great confidence that they became a vital part of the life of the Caucasian region, having inscribed their names in the annals of local history. It is extremely difficult to identify the actual number of Poles who participated in the conquest of the Caucasus, just as it is difficult to say whether these people were aware of their role in this process, but the result is indisputable – the Poles helped Russia to conquer this region, turning it into an integral part of the Russian state.

Opis:
International relations have always been a very complex and controversial phenomene affected by historical and political events, wchich influenced the forming of mutual prejudices, antipathy and stereotypes. The concept of national identity and nationalism began to shape relativetly late, in the XVI-XVII cebturies, and their advent was connected with national self-consiousness rise and political conditionnaly. This statement is either applicaple to the Polish-Russian relations, wchich not always were inflated with animosity and hatred. The author of the article considers the process of Russia and the Russians'negative image forming, defines the most significant events, and uniting and separating factors. In this context the two spheres of influence are meant: political-historical and cultural. In the author's opinion, nowadays the negative image of Russia and the Russians is fixed in mind of the Polish. It is very hard to overcome these prejudices, however there is such a possibility.

The article deals with the problems of perceiving Russian language by the Poles deported during 1940th to the territory of the present-day Perm region as a result of mass deportations, as well as those arrested for taking part in the so called “anti-Soviet” activities and serving time in the camps of Perm region. While analyzing the texts of exiles’ memories the author comes to the conclusion that the Russian language for those Poles who survived through exposure to the Urals, is in the first place the language of enemy and captivity and serves as an instrument of propaganda and forced Russification. At the same time in some of the exiles’ memories studying of the Russian language is the only way to interact with the culture and literature which makes it easier to endure their spiritual isolation.

Among the servicemen of the Separate Caucasian Corps, there were also immigrants from Poland. The circumstances of their appearance in the region were different. The captured soldiers and officers of the liquidated army of the Kingdom of Poland, as well as persons distributed according to conscription lists, etc., were sent here. They were sent to different units, but a lot of them were assigned to the Tengin Regiment, which was considered the most suitable for reforming the “unreliable ones”. The regiment took an active part in hostilities and was involved in the construction of a chain of fortifications on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus. For this, the participants in the battles, including the Poles, were decorated by the command and personally by the emperor.

The picture of the Polish nation is positive whichis partly connected with the given literary genre requiring positively evaluative expressions. Thepresented picture is to a large extent based on the ethnic, historical-political, religious and socialcontexts. It is only the historical-political context that contains the elements with the negativeconnotations, but at the same time it seems to be the starting point for reevaluating and buildingnew relationships between nations

Using previously unknown archival and historiographical materials, author, for the first time, made a study of problems of cultural adaptation of Polish professors at the University of St.Vladimir from 1834 to 1839. After suppression of November uprising, in 1832 all Polish schoolsin Ukraine, including Lyceum in Krzemienic, were closed. On the base of liquidated Lyceum, in1834 the University of St. Vladimir was opened in Kiev. It had to be the instrument of russificationpolicy of the tsarist regime. Till 1839 36% of its teaching staff consisted of former Lyceumprofessors: I. Ablamovich, G. Grechina, S. Zenovich, M. Yakubovich, V. Besser, J. Kozhenovsky,A. Mickiewicz, and others. They found themselves in new for them social and national environmentthat caused radical changes of their living conditions. Focusing on the fate of ProfessorAleksandr Mickiewicz, author describes in detail the dramatic vicissitudes of life path of Polishteachers under the circumstances of hard choices between national sentiments and loyalty to thegovernment, which offered financial stability and social status.

The 100th anniversary of creation of the quazi parliament in the form of the State Duma as the Lower Chamber and in general reorganized State Council as the Upper Chamber takes place in 2006 and is of great interest not only historians but also of the specialists in study of literature, as they watch and research the social changes in the Russian state organization and can’t stand paying attention to the influence of this event on the political consciousness of the Russians of the first decade of the XXth century which was consolidated in a lot of works, also works of literature. The subject of the article is to show the attitude to that event of the Polish society, especially of the Poles from the Polish Kingdom, which was under the Russian reign in those times. The author represents this attitude through the utterances of the most influential people of the Polish public opinion, such as: Bolesław Prus, Jozef Piłsudski, Wladysław Studnicki, Tadeusz Grużewski, Hipolit Korwin-Milewski, Konstanty Skirmunt and gen. Jan Jacyna, also the utterances of the leading figures of ND, PPS and the editors of the popular „Kurier Warszawski”.A conclusion, to which the author comes on the basis of this discourse, is the following: inPolish opinion, in the majority of cases the skepticism prevailed, which regarded the reformatory possibilities of the Duma and also the attitude to the new system in Russia, which replaced the former autocratic tsarist absolutism in 1906, as a system, which, despite all its limitations, nevertheless was constitutional, and of Russia itself, as a monarchy, already representative.

The work reveals the circumstances of the appearance of the Poles in the North Caucasus and their stay in the captivity of the highlanders. The reasons for this phenomenon and the attitude of the Russian administration to the practice of the slave trade are shown. The article describes the fate of those people who were able to free themselves and find salvation in the Russian fortifications. It is suggested that, having experienced slavery, the former slaves changed their appraisal of the Russian state which, in this situation, was their protector and liberator. In the research, for the first time, the material identified in the State Archives of the Stavropol Region of the Russian Federation is introduced into scientific circulation.

W artykule przybliżono podłoże i uwarunkowania izolacji Maciejowskiego w społeczeństwie polskim w latach 50. i 60. Lata 50. i 60. XIX w. to okres, w którym uczony próbował własną postawą i różnymi deklaracjami przełamać izolację i zmienić swój niekorzystny wizerunek dominujący w społeczeństwie polskim. Jego naznaczone dobrymi intencjami działania w tym zakresie nie były wynikiem politycznego wyrachowania ani troski o korzyści finansowe.

In the first part (Rough Draft) the author focuses on the image of modern Russia, while in the second part (Final Draft) he expands his observations into Poland and its people. The image presented by the author notably duplicates ethnic and cultural stereotypes about Poland and Poles, fixed in the common consciousness of Russians. As a result, despite the objectivity declared by the author, it is difficult to consider the discussed novels a breakthrough in the context of the process of overcoming mutual prejudices between the neighboring nations on the basis of the literature.

The nineteenth century Russian women memoirism presents a valuable source of information concerning Polish-Russian literary relationships. A. Kern and A. Panaeva’s memoirs justify that A. Mickiewicz was a well-known and appreciated poet in Russia and his works were perceived by Russian literary elites as a symbol of struggle for national liberation. Russian publishers and editors of literary magazines played a crucial role in the popularization of Mickiewicz’s literary output. His poems, translated into Russian by Z. Sierakowski or W. Szczastny, often appeared in Russian literary magazines. Russian Decembrist writers (P. Annenkova and M. Volkonska) in their memoirs written in the Siberian exile presented in the most favourable light Poles (S. Leparski and M. Rukiewicz) who were also exiled to Siberia. But, on the other hand, in T. Bulharin’s memoirs, whose controversial activity was condemned by Russian intellectual elites, as well as in A. Smirnova’s opinion, which represented the official line of the Russian aristocracy, we find negative images of Poles and the “Polish question”.

Polish language is only one of the elements of widely-understood Polish culture. The group subject to field-research study has also preserved other elements, such as: hierarchy of values of norms and patterns, feeling of distinctiveness, typical Polish traditions and customs. This observation contrasts with stereotypical opinion according to which preservation of culture is impossible without preservation of language.
