We investigated the surface property change of indium tin oxide (ITO) with the various cleaning methods, using photoemission spectroscopy (PES), work function change and near-edge X-ray adsorption fine structure (NEXAFS). The detergent treatments of ITO with acetone (C₃H₆O), methanol (CH₄O), 2-propanol (C₃H₈O), and deionized (D) water yielded work function shifts as high as 0.99 eV compared to the no-treatment ITO. In contrast, work function shifts of 0.10-0.35 eV were measured after other treatments. The lowest C 1s concentration was obtained after O2 plasma treatment of ITO. There was no big change in the peak position and the shape of $In 3d^{5//2}$, and $Sn 3d^{5//2}$ after each treatment. But C 1s and O 1s spectra shows a peak shift and shape change. Presence of carbon can be minimized by NaOH treatment combined with oxygen plasma. In NEXAFS spectra of C K-edge on each sample, we found two π-binding states whose positions are 284.5 and 287.9 eV, C=C and C=O, respectively.

In this study, the gamma radiation attenuation was investigated for different composite metallic foams, soil and standard sand samples. Gamma transmission technique with narrow beam geometry, Co-60 radiation source were used in experimental studies. The measurements were used to calculate the linear attenuation coefficients and porosities of these materials. The results were compared according to radiation attenuation and porosity distribution of porous media. The metallic foams had large and non-homogeneous porosity values, therefore sand and soil showed better radiation attenuation property. However, the saturated silica foam had large ability of gamma ray attenuation as well as dry soil.

Even after a decade of intense investigation, the microscopic nature of EL2 is still controversial. Two models must still be considered seriously, namely that EL2 is the isolated AsGa antisite, and that EL2 also contains an arsenic interstitial on the (111) axis. This paper will comment on experiments used to support each of the two models, and will discuss attempts to reconcile the two.

Opis:
The first point-contact spectroscopy measurements on $MgCNi_3$ single crystals of very good quality are presented. The measurements have been performed in the temperature range from 1.5 K up to 10 K and at magnetic fields up to 6 T. The superconducting energy gap Δ of the system is found to be scattered between 1 and 1.2 meV which gives the 2Δ/k $T_c$ ratio between BCS weak-coupling value of ~3.5 and a strong coupling of about 4.2. The excess current evaluated in magnetic field indicates the presence of a single energy gap.

Opis:
Using a simple model of thin film a dependence of the current carrier concentration N on thickness L in thin bismuth films is calculated in the conditions of the quantum size effect. Applying the parametrized form of the thin film potential it is shown that the experimentally determined anomalous dependence N(L) can be obtained theoretically, assuming the standard boundary conditions in contrast to the results reported in literature. It is proved that the very structure of the hole energy spectrum is responsible for the anomalous character of the N(L) dependence.

Conductivity measurements were carried out at room temperature on samples of nominally undoped Bridgman, bulk crystals and MBE-grown layers of CdTe. The samples were equipped with indium contacts which made it possible to determine the voltage distribution along the path of the current flow. The results show that for both types of CdTe almost all of the applied voltage drops in the vicinity of the positively biased contact. The resistance of the samples was shown not to depend on the distance between the pads. The results agree with predictions of model of current injection into semiconductors with deep traps.

The surface charge Q$\text{}_{sc}$ versus the surface Fermi level position Φ$\text{}_{s}$ for real (111) surfaces of p- and n-type Si has been studied. The values of Q$\text{}_{sc}$ have been obtained on the basis of measurements of the surface potential V$\text{}_{s}$ by means of the surface photo voltage method. The complementary character of Q$\text{}_{sc}$(Φ$\text{}_{s}$) dependences for the surfaces of p- and n-type Si supports the fact that the surface state distribution is not dependent on the type of bulk doping but on the surface preparation process.

Opis:
Thin europium films (20-50 nm thick) on a glass substrate were transformed into $EuH_x$ (0 < x < 2) by interaction with H_2 introduced into the reactor in successive calibrated doses. By measuring the pressure, the hydrogen uptake (H/Eu) was determined at every step of the reaction. In situ monitoring of bulk properties (electrical resistance R(H/Eu), relative transparency to light T(H/Eu)/$T_0$ and (H/Eu) dependent light transparency spectrum) confirms metal-semiconductor transition at room temperature. Both the electrical resistance and optical transparency of the film strongly increase with hydrogen concentration as a consequence of the resulting increase of the content of semiconducting dihydride. Moreover, the course of work function changes ΔΦ(H/Eu) indicates inversion of the charge-transfer direction on the surface. The transition at room temperature from positively to negatively polarized hydrogen adsorbate was observed in situ during hydrogen uptake. As a result, the work function at equilibrium state varies with hydrogen content from +18 to -18 mV with respect to pure metal film, reflecting the change of "mirror potential" generated on the surface due to the accumulation of hydrogen adsorbates in the subsurface region.

We discuss the surface photovoltage effect observed in photoemission experiment performed at room (300 K) and low (120 K) temperatures on Si/InP(110) heterojunctions for a thin Si coverage on n- and p-doped InP substrates. The theoretical analysis of the surface photovoltage effect has been performed on the basis of thermionic and thermionic-field emission models of transport processes in Schottky barriers.

Opis:
Sensitivity of X-ray integral reflectivity of GaAs single crystal to a degree of structure distortions was established to grow considerably in the Bragg diffraction case when the characteristic AgK_{α$\text{}_{1}}$ line is changed for more hard white radiation. In effect, the absorption length essentially exceeds the extinction length what results in enhancement of incoherent scattering. Measurements of X-ray integral reflectivity coordinate dependence by single crystal spectrometer permitted to determine the mean level of crystal lattice distortion as well as the degree of structure homogeneity of a sample with dislocations. The Debye-Waller static factor value was estimated from X-ray integral reflectivity magnitudes for the 800 reflection of white radiation.

Opis:
Optical transitions in photofield emission from barium covered tungsten were observed. The initial energies of the excited electrons obtained for different crystallographic planes range near the values of s₁ = -0.07 ± 0.02 eV and s₂ = -0.28 ± 0.04 eV with respect to the Fermi level. The energies are ascribed to electrons in the thin barium layer. The work functions of the barium covered tungsten (100), (111) and (100) planes were estimated using field emission method. In order to measure very small photocurrents a modulated laser radiation and the phase-sensitive detection were used.

Strong electric-field enhancement of the thermal emission rate of holes from the doubly ionized charge state of the EL2 defect was revealed with the deep-level transient spectroscopy in p-type GaAs and analyzed in a model of phonon-assisted tunnel effect. Similar dependence observed for the electric field directions parallel to three main crystallographic axes suggests tetrahedral symmetry of the defect which is consistent with its identification as the arsenic antisite.

Opis:
The interaction between impurities of two solute elements in metal hosts leads to a non-random distribution of impurity atoms among the lattice sites. Experimental studies of this distribution provide quantitative information on the energy involved in the formation of an individual impurity-impurity pair. The perturbed angular correlation measurements performed with $\text{}^{111}$In probe atoms and Mössbauer spectra of $\text{}^{57}$Co are used to derive the interaction energy of In atoms with Mn and Co atoms introduced into silver matrix. It is demonstrated that In atoms attract Mn and Co atoms and in the case of In-Mn pair the interaction energy value was determined. The obtained results are discussed in the frame of the semiempirical model and the recent first principles theoretical calculations.

Opis:
This study is dealing with the difference of radiation chemical yields of single and double strand breaks induced in plasmid DNA by photons inside and outside of the soft X-ray water window, i.e., in the wavelength range from 2.28 nm to 4.88 nm. Photons were generated by various plasma sources providing nanosecond and sub-nanosecond pulses of extreme ultraviolet, soft X-ray and X-ray radiation. DNA strand breaks were determined by agarose gel electrophoresis. Higher radiation chemical yields of both single and double strand breaks were found using picosecond and nanosecond sources of extreme ultraviolet and X-ray radiation.
