Opis:
A system of charged weakly interacting bosons with "d" symmetry is considered. The interaction U$\text{}^{(d)}$ = U$\text{}^{(s)}$ f(theta) contains the angle dependence f(theta) ~ |Y$\text{}_{2,1}$|$\text{}^{2}$ consistent with "d" symmetry. This system resembles much more free bosons than the system with "s" symmetry (interaction U$\text{}^{(s)}$). For example at T=0, n approx n$\text{}_{c}^{(d)}$, where n ≈ n$\text{}_{c}^{(d)}$ are the densities of particles and condensate respectively.

Valence-band structures, hole effective masses and optical gain have been calculated for strained-layer quantum-well laser structures. Results show a logarithmic relation between the peak optical gain and carrier concentration for all possible material compositions of the quaternary system.

Ζn$\text{}_{1-x}$Mg$\text{}_{x}$Se mixed crystals with x ranging from 0 to 0.56 were obtained by high pressure Bridgman method. It has been found that a phase transition from sphalerite structure to wurtzite one occurs at x = 0.185 ± 0.03. The crystals exhibit blue-violet and yellow-green (depending on x) luminescence in the temperature range from 40 K to room temperature. An attempt has been also made to dope Ζn$\text{}_{1-x}$Μg$\text{}_{x}$Se crystals with Al. The incorporation of Al produces a strong green photoluminescence in the temperature range from 40 K to 300 K but almost completely quenches the near-band-edge emission.

Opis:
The processes of the energy deactivation of electronic excitation in Yb(III) ß-diketonates and their dependence on the nature of ß-diketone and the second ligand as well as the environment and its state (complexes in organic solvents and polymer matrix) were studied. Taking as an example the ytterbium thenoyltrifluoroacetonate, it was shown that the energy losses in the ligand and Yb(III) ion, which is due to the high-frequency vibrations of the central C-H group of the ß-diketone, can lead to the decreased quantum yield of the luminescence. The increase in the medium rigidity causes the decrease in losses in the ligand, but does not affect the deactivation of the Yb(III) ion excited level. In the mix-ligand complexes the second ligand (1,10-phenanthroline) improves the screening of the central ion providing almost full transfer of the energy, absorbed by ligand, to ytterbium ion.

Opis:
Molecular dynamics computer simulations are employed to investigate the effect of a sample thickness on the ejection process from ultrathin graphite. The thickness of graphite varies from 2 to 16 graphene layers and the system is bombarded by 10 keV C₆₀ projectiles at normal incidence. The ejection yield and the kinetic energy of emitted atoms are monitored. The implications of the results to a novel analytical approach in secondary ion mass spectrometry based on the ultrathin free-standing graphene substrates and transmission geometry are discussed.

Optical properties of both linear and dimerized nanochains of titanium at different atomic distances are calculated using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbital method, and using the generalized gradient approximation. When Ti nanochains were compressed, the position of critical points such as static dielectric constants and the main peaks in optical spectra shifted with an increased or decreased energy comparative to that at equilibrium constants. Under tensile strain ε_{1max}(ω) decreases in linear and dimerized structures. The plasma frequency for both structures decreases as the bond length increases. Moreover, the peaks of the energy loss function move toward higher energies with increasing bond length for linear structure, while they do not change significantly for the dimerized structure. The absorption for both nanostructures decreases by increasing the bond lengths.

In the present paper the phase transformations occurring in hot worked and heat-treated Ni-rich NiTi shape memory alloy were studied using X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and bend and free recovery measurements. Based on conducted measurements it can be seen that in the studied alloy two-step B2 ↔ R ↔ B19' phase transitions occurred. Due to the fact that during heating the phase transition B2 → R and R → B19' occurs in a very narrow temperature range and differential scanning calorimetry peaks overlap additional X-ray diffraction measurements were performed. Obtained characteristic temperatures from applied different experimental methods are in good agreement. The optimum heat-treatment was selected to obtain rods with a shape recovery temperature A_{f} below 37°C to prepare prototypes of medical implants activated by patients body heat.

Solute-solvent interactions were studied by a method based on laser induced optical birefringence in aqueous solutions. The paper reports results of the optical Kerr constant measurements for binary liquid mixtures of aqueous solution of methanol, ethanol, n-propanol and acetone at room temperature in a wide range of concentrations. At 50% concentration of the above mentioned alcohols, the temperature dependence of the laser induced optical birefringence was also measured in the range from 283 K to 315 K. These data together with the density and refractive index were used to calculate the optical and specific Kerr constants. Moreover, these data enabled the calculation of the anisotropic factors, optical anisotropy and orientation function of the substances studied.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments on SnTe crystals doped by Sm, Eu, and Yb were performed to determine the valency of these ions in the SnTe matrix. The analysis of the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy valence-band spectra revealed that Eu and Yb are divalent while Sm is trivalent in SnTe. These conclusions were confirmed by studies of the binding energies of core levels (4d-levels of Yb and 3d -levels of Sm and Eu), which are not presented here.

We study the optical transmission spectra in one-dimensional aperiodic Thue-Morse multilayers composed from alternating layers of media with positive and negative refractive index. We examine the influence of phase compensation on the spectral transmission for both on-axis and off-axis wave propagation. The origin of the transmission resonances and their relation with the field localization are analyzed. Nondispersive and lossless, as well as realistic dispersive and weakly lossy materials are considered.

Nanosized titania $(TiO_{2})$ is synthesized by laser-induced pyrolysis using $TiCl_{4}$ as a liquid precursor. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering confirmed anatase structure of $TiO_{2}$ nanocrystals. The dielectric function ε(ω) of $TiO_{2}$ nanopowders has been determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the energy range from 1.5 to 6 eV at room temperature. The features observed in ε(ω) have been fitted to analytical line shapes by using the second derivatives of experimental spectra. The energies corresponding to different interband electronic transitions have been determined. Photoluminescence measurements have been carried out in vacuum for T = 20 K and T = 300 K. Under laser irradiation with sub-band gap photon energy, anatase nanocrystals have displayed strong visible photoluminescence emission. In this broad photoluminescence band different variations of line shape and position with excitation energy and temperature are observed for nanopowders with different crystallite size, pointing out to the various electronic transitions mediated by defect levels within the band gap.

Opis:
The surface of carbon monolith (CM) was chemically treated in order to obtain antibacterial filters with silver deposit for water treatment. The chemical treatment involved submerging the as-received CM in $HNO_{3},$ $KOH$ and $H_{2}O_{2}$ solution. The specific surface area was examined by $N_{2}$ adsorption. Silver deposition at the surface of CM samples was performed using cheap and simple procedure of immersing CM samples in aqueous solution of $AgNO_{3}$. Temperature programmed desorption method has been used in order to investigate the nature and thermal stability of surface oxygen groups before and after silver deposition. The composition and crystalinity of silver deposits have been examined by X-ray diffraction. Chemical treatment does not cause any drastic changes of CM specific surface area, but increases a total amount of surface oxides. Amount of deposited silver is several times higher for all chemically treated samples. The results show that increasing the amount of CO yielding groups on CM surface leads to increased amount of Ag deposit and decreases its crystallite sizes

This paper presents an evaluation of the performance degradation of photovoltaic modules after twelve operation years in a steppe region environment in Algeria. The objective is to understand the different degradation modes of the photovoltaic modules and associated factors and their impact on the electrical properties (V_{oc}, I_{sc}, V_{max}, I_{max}, P_{max} and FF) using the degradation tests of IEC 61215 qualification standard and the electroluminescence test. The experimental results show that yearly degradation rates of the maximum power output P_{max} present the highest possible loss, ranging from 2.08% to 5.2%. Additionally, the results show that the short-circuit current I_{sc} comes second with yearly degradation rates spanning from 2.75% to 2.84%. Finally the open-circuit voltage V_{oc} is the least affected, with yearly degradation occurring from 0.01% to 4.25%.
