Opis:
We study the spin coupling of protons which are localized in dense neutron star matter. The effective spin interaction of neighbouring protons is induced by the direct spin interaction of protons with the background neutrons. The exchange integral of the effective proton-proton spin interaction is calculated. The interaction is ferromagnetic in a wide range of neutron star matter parameters.

Opis:
We compare the Fermi liquid (FL) and statistical spin liquid (SSL) representations of the electronic properties for strongly correlated systems. In particular, we discuss the entropy, as well as the magnetization as a function of band filling, temperature and magnetic field. These properties are quite different in the two (FL, SSL) states. Antiferromagnetic state disappears for a small number of holes in the doped Mott insulator.

Opis:
The optimized single-particle wave functions contained in the parameters of the Hubbard model (hopping integral t and intraatomic interaction U) are determined explicitly in the correlated state for electronic systems of various symmetries and dimensions: Hubbard chain, square and triangular lattices, and the three cubic lattices: SC, BCC, and FCC. In effect, the electronic properties of these structures as a function of the interatomic distance R are obtained. In most cases, the model parameters do not scale linearly with the lattice constant. Also, the atomic part of the total ground state energy changes with the U/t ratio and therefore should be (and is) included in the analysis. The solutions of dimensions D>1 are analyzed by utilizing the approximate Gutzwiller treatment.

Opis:
One-dimensional atomic chain with a variable-range hopping is described within the extended Hubbard model. The Gutzwiller-ansatz approximation is used to determine the optimized single-particle (Wannier) wave functions in the correlated state. Hopping integral up to the third neighbors is taken into account and the results are compared with those for the infinite hopping range. Ground state energy of the system is compared with that making use of the rigorous Lieb-Wu solution with the optimized wave functions. The evolution of the properties as a function of interatomic distance is discussed.

The optimized single-particle wave functions contained in the parameters of the Hubbard model (t and U) were determined for an infinite atomic chain. In effect, the electronic properties of the chain as a function of interatomic distance R were obtained and compared for the Lieb-Wu exact solution, the Gutzwiller-wave-function approximation, and the Gutzwiller-ansatz case. The ground state energy and other characteristics for the infinite chain were also compared with those obtained earlier for a nanoscopic chain within the exact diagonalization combined with an ab initio adjustment of the single-particle wave functions in the correlated state (exact diagonalization combined with an ab initio method). For the sake of completeness, we briefly characterize also each of the solutions. Our approach completes the Lieb-Wu solution, as it provides the system electronic properties evolution as a function of physically controlable parameter - the interatomic distance.

We determine the explicit form of the single-particle Wannier functions {w$\text{}_{i}(r)}$ appearing in the parameters of quantum models. The method is illustrated on the example of the Hubbard chain, for which we derive the renormalized wave equation starting from a variational principle and by treating the system ground state energy as a functional of {w$\text{}_{i}(r)}$ and their derivatives. In this manner, the optimized basis is obtained only after the electronic correlations have been included in the rigorous Lieb-Wu solution. The results for the ground state energy and the size of the renormalized s-type orbitals, both as a function of interatomic distance, are calculated explicitly.

We have determined an instability of the Fermi-liquid state of almost localized fermions in an applied magnetic field. It is proposed that a transition to a strongly correlated fermions (statistical-spin-liquid) state takes place at that point. The resultant magnetization curve and the field dependence of the specific heat are calculated and compared with those for CeRu$\text{}_{2}$Si$\text{}_{2}$.

Experimental investigations of light coupling from a core into a ring caused by microbendings in photonic crystal fibres are shown. We present a setup arrangement, mode fields with and without coupling and a plot of power transfer versus localisation of the modulator along the fibre. We also show the most probable explanation of the obtained data.

The magnetic anisotropy in UF$\text{}_{10-x}$Ni$\text{}_{x}$Si$\text{}_{2}$ series has been studied by torsion magnetometry and initial ac magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range of 77-293K. The effective anisotropy constant changes with Ni content showing some increase for intermediate concentration. An increase in magnetic anisotropy energy at low temperatures is due to the uranium sublattice ordering. Magnetic anisotropy behaviour in UFe$\text{}_{2}$Ni$\text{}_{8}$Si$\text{}_{2}$ is influenced by an additional enhancement of the 3d sublattice connected with the ordering Fe magnetic moments.

We investigated magnetoreflectance and magnetization of highly diluted bulk Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te crystals 0.2% ≤ x ≤ 10%. The exchange constant in terms of mean field approximation and virtual crystal approximation (the ratio of the heavy hole exciton splitting to mean spin per unit cell) was evaluated and found x-dependent. This deviation from the mean field approximation and virtual crystal approximation prediction is caused by the local potential introduced by Mn ions. We discuss the problem within a Wigner-Seitz approach and within a model of magnetic and chemical disorder based on the alloy theory.

In this study the effect of Fe for Ni substitution in Ni₄₄Co₆Mn₃₉Sn₁₁ metamagnetic shape memory alloys on their structure, magneto-structural transformation characteristics, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties was studied. The results show that the structure and martensite transformation behavior strongly depends on the Fe concentration. The martensitic transformation temperature decreases with 1 at.% of Fe and is suppressed with higher Fe content. It was further found that substitution of Fe for Ni leads to lowering of the value of magnetic entropy change.

The M$\text{}_{1}$/MgO/M$\text{}_{2}$ trilayer tunnel magnetoresistance systems are studied by means of X-ray diffraction, NMR, and transmission electron microscopy techniques. As M$\text{}_{1}$ and M$\text{}_{2}$ electrodes we used Co, Fe, and CoFe layers. The growth mechanism and structural quality of both electrodes and of the epitaxial MgO barrier forming the magnetic tunnel junctions are experimentally examined. It is shown that the crystallographic coherence of magnetic tunnel junctions across the MgO barrier is significantly disturbed by imperfect crystal structure of magnetic electrodes. The NMR results indicate a difference in short-range order between bottom and top electrodes.

Chiral nematic liquid crystals are very interesting materials to infiltrate photonic crystal fibers since they are characterized by unique optical properties such as selective Bragg reflection, circular dichroism, and optical activity. In this paper the latest experimental results of the photonic crystal fibers filled with new chiral nematic liquid crystals are presented. Spectral properties of the light propagating in the photonic liquid crystal fibers have been measured and analyzed.

We report results of magnetization study of EuS/PbS superstructures with different thicknesses of magnetic and nonmagnetic layers. Reduction of ferromagnetic phase transition temperature was found with decreasing EuS thickness. Reasonable description of this effect is obtained within the model based on the mean field approximation.
