Surface spin waves in the layered structure of the FeBr$\text{}_{2}$ field-induced metamagnet are studied theoretically. Surface spin-wave modes are calculated for the (001) surface and for the paramagnetic phase at low temperatures. Allowing the surface exchange parameters to deviate from the bulk values, full richness of the surface spin-wave spectra is displayed. The problem of the stability of the ground state of the system is also discussed.

The Curie temperature and layer magnetization of ferromagnetic superlattices with random irregularities in modulation amplitude, thickness of layers and width of interdiffusion zones are studied in an extended version of the Kirkwood approximation. It is found that the increase of the deviation in the modulation amplitude gives rise to localized magnetism and the significant increase in the Curie temperature.

Opis:
Fluoranthene and perylene radical cation salts are quasi-one-dimensional conductors, which show a Peierls transition to a charge-density-wave ground state. Radical cation salts with different stoichiometries composed of the aromatic donor molecules fluoranthene (Fa = C$\text{}_{16}$H$\text{}_{10}$) or perylene (Per = C$\text{}_{20}$H$\text{}_{12}$) and the counterion X¯ = PF¯$\text{}_{6}$ were investigated. We find that the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity and the properties in the charge-density-wave ground state strongly depend on the composition of the crystals. When fluoranthene is replaced by perylene, the Peierls transition is shifted from 180 K to 120 K and the ground state energy gap decreases from values of 120-180 meV to 60-80 meV. In the charge-density-wave ground state the threshold field for nonlinear conductivity varies between 0.1 and 1 V/cm for different systems. Our results indicate that disorder, three-dimensional coupling and commensurability effects play an important role for the transport properties of these systems.

The classical, electrodynamic definition of the ampere is incoherent with quantum electrodynamics. The problem, although insignificant at the macroscopic scale, manifests clearly at the nanostructure level, where the consistently quantum approach is necessary. In this paper, we consider the Casimir effect to quantify inconsistencies that could have resulted if electric metrology of microstructures and nanostructures (including graphene) had been based on classical electrodynamics and the current SI definition of the ampere. The issue is discussed in the context of the New SI program, where the base electric unit is to be redefined by fixing the numerical value of the elementary charge. The conclusion supports the case for a prompt redefinition of the base electric unit, which will make the electric metrology in general, and the electric metrology of nanostructures in particular, coherent with the international system of units.

This study focuses on the problem of sound radiation by two concentric clamped flat plates, circular and annular, into the half-space. The system of three coupled differential equations comprising two equations of motions of plates and the wave equation, is solved exactly. Vibrations of plates are axisymmetric and time-harmonic with a single excitation frequency. The initial phase difference of excitations can be nonzero. Attenuation due to fluid loading and material damping is included. Kirchoff-Love and Kelvin-Voigt theories are applied. The effect of initial phase difference of excitations on the acoustic power radiated is examined as well as errors resulting from neglecting the fluid loading.

Problems related to thermal radiation of human bodies in the microwave range are presented in the paper from medical diagnosis point of view. The paper reviews physical principles of thermal radiation measurement at microwave frequencies. A design of a modulation type radiometer with both zero reading and compensation of influence of the reflectivity is presented in the paper. On the base of this design, requirements for absolute temperature measurement conditions in the lossy and homogeneous medium were found. It is worth noting that these demands do not need any limitations for environmental parameters, especially for their stability during measurement (ambient temperature stability). At the end, experimental results of the measurements carried out with the use of the microwave radiometer operating in the 1.5 GHz band are shown.

Spin-polarized transport through a single-level quantum dot interacting with a local phonon mode is studied in the frame of the nonequilibrium Green-function technique. It is shown that strong electron-phonon interaction gives rise to a significant current suppression, to additional resonance peaks in the differential conductance as well as to oscillations of the tunnel magnetoresistance. Also, a phonon-induced mechanism leading to a minimum in tunnel magnetoresistance at zero bias voltage is explained.

The paper presents a short review of neutron scattering results obtained during investigation of short range order in bulk polymers. Neutron scattering proves exceptionally powerful in this type of study through (i) large penetration depth of bulk samples, (ii) isotope sensitivity, and (iii) the use of spin polarization technique. The examples provided deliver results that can hardly be obtained from e.g. X-ray diffraction.

A model describing a Heisenberg ferromagnetic monolayer (in a magnetic field) interacting with its non-magnetic bulk substrate is formulated. We use reduced-density operators to show that physical properties of the monolayer are affected by its interaction with the environment. Particularly the influence of the substrate lattice vibrations on the monolayer exchange parameter is examined. The Gaussian-type orbitals were used to calculate the distance dependence of the exchange parameter and the many-body Green functions to calculate the temperature dependence of the magnetization. Finally, the influence of the Debye temperature of the substrate on the magnetization of the monolayer is depicted. Although the resultant effect is not prominent, we state that interaction of ultrathin magnetic films with their environment has to be taken into account in the construction of the reduced-density operator.

Using nonequilibrium Green function formalism the spin-polarized electronic transport through a quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes is studied. Arbitrary Coulomb correlations and spin-flip processes are considered in the dot, for both parallel and antiparallel magnetic configurations of the junction. It is found that spin-flip processes suppress the magnetoresistance between each pair of the threshold bias voltages, thus giving rise to sharp tunnel magnetoresistance maxima at the thresholds. The origin of additional steps in the electric current, splitting of the resonance peaks in the corresponding differential conductance as well as negative differential conductance is also discussed in the context of interplay between tunneling processes and the intradot spin-flip transitions.

The bilinear and biquadratic coupling between two metallic layers separated by a nonmagnetic metal spacer are studied. The paper contains analytical formulae for the coupling which are obtained from the energy potential of the spin-polarized electron gas. The formulae for the coupling are obtained in the framework of the Hohenberg-Kohn formalism of the density functional theory and variables of the coupling are the electron density and the spin polarization of the magnetic multilayer.
