Opis:
This paper discusses molecular beam epitaxy with particular emphasis on the production of state of the art electronic and optoelectronic low dimensional structures and devices. The molecular beam epitaxy process is outlined briefly and the practical problems associated with producing "state of the art" (Al,Ga)As/GaAs structures are considered. Examples include high mobility electron and hole gases, low threshold current lasers and the multi-quantum well solar cells.

In earlier measurements of momentum distribution of annihilating e$\text{}^{+}$e$\text{}^{-}$ pairs the intensity of o-Ps component seemed to be much higher than that expected from the lifetime data. In this paper we show that such a deviation disappears if one assumes that the pick-off component of angular correlation of annihilation radiation is narrower by 10% than the component related to free annihilation.

High-field ionization suppression in a classical Kepler ensemble is discussed in terms of optimization with respect to pulse turn-on rate as well as pre-pulse preparation. It is argued that high-field ionization suppression is best understood in terms of reduced probability of ionization for pulsed fields, whereas for a quasi-steady field, high-field ionization suppression implies a reduced ionization rate at higher intensities. The classical ensemble is used to calculate the high-field ionization rate of a one-dimensional atomic model using a Gaussian short-range potential and the results are compared with high-frequency Floquet theory results recently reported by other authors. Better than qualitative agreement is found and the results are compared and discussed in terms of quantum superposition and classical interference. Finally, high-field ionization suppression is discussed in relation to statistical relative stability of classical orbits of the ensemble, and classical interference for both short- and long-range potentials. Correspondence with quantum superposition is interpreted in relation to quantum-classical correspondence.

Opis:
We construct a novel model for a single photon, bearing an internal dynamics. In our model, the photon, while travelling with a speed very close to c (the ultimate speed of light in empty space), is considered to oscillate, in its own frame, with its given frequency f. The envelope of the photon's instantaneous maximum amplitude, which we will call from here on straight "amplitude", is assumed to travel with exactly c, which makes that the center of the photon ought to travel with a speed little less than c. It is interesting to add that, in the present approach, the higher the frequency of the photon at hand, the narrower is its amplitude of oscillation. It is further assumed that the photon has a rest mass which we call "kernel", carrying the translational motion of it. This allows us to estimate the rest mass of the given photon, based on adopted initial conditions of the early universe, based on the recent Yarman and Kholmetskii model (resolving, amongst other things, the dark energy quest). One then comes out with the result that all observable photons (i.e. either high energy gamma rays or very low frequency radio waves), travel practically with the same speed, which is virtually c, the measured ultimate speed. A model regarding the internal dynamics in question is further offered.

We derive the joint probability distribution of the first two spectral moments for the Gaussian β-ensemble random matrix ensembles in N dimensions for any N. This is achieved by making use of two complementary invariants of the domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ where the spectral moments are defined. Our approach is significantly different from those employed previously to answer related questions and potentially offers new insights. We also discuss the problems faced when attempting to include higher spectral moments.

The microstructure and wear properties of pulse plasma treated AISI 4140 steel was investigated. The surface properties of the materials have been improved by modifying the surfaces of the DIN 1.2210 steel with pulse plasma technique. The sample surfaces have been modified by pulse plasma with C₃H₈, nitrogen and O₂ gases. Two different distances between the sample and nozzle and three different numbers of pulse were determined for modification process and the surface process was implemented by using tungsten electrode with 800 µF battery capacity. The optical images were taken of the materials which the surfaces were improved by using pulse plasma technique. The surface modified samples were subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis. Wear tests were performed in a linear wear test machine with 0.15 m/s constant sliding speed under 5 N loads for 200 m sliding distance. The wear rate was changed in accordance with process parameters. The wear resistance increased in the surface modified specimens was compared to that of non-modified ones. Worn surfaces of specimens were studied by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses techniques. It is determined that the thickness of modification layer changes regarding to the amount of new phases and sample-nozzle distance. It is approved the increase on wear resistance related to wolfram diffusion.

In gas sensing applications we often use sensors which have poor selectivity. Such sensors are mature, cheap devices with simple application circuits. Unfortunately, their cross sensitivity greatly restricts their usefulness when used in systems which employs univariate analysis. One method which allows to overcome this difficulty is utilization of multivariate analysis methods applied to the response from the group of such non-selective sensors. This work presents the multivariate, pattern recognition system utilized to process the response of an array of non-selective semiconductor sensors to obtain the qualitative information.

The possibility has been investigated of determining, using graydar (Gamma RAY Detection And Ranging) approach, the in-depth partial-density profile of some substance absorbed in a dense medium. Analytical algorithms have been derived for retrieving the in-depth profile of the partial density of the absorbed substance on the basis of the conjecturally known in-depth profile of the extinction of the absorbing medium and the experimentally determinable graydar profile. The retrieval error under the Poisson noise conditions has also been estimated analytically. The simulations performed of the Poisson-noise effect concern the case of soil moisture. The results obtained confirm the validity of the derived retrieval algorithms and error estimates and show that the soil moisture profile may be accurately determined to depths of 50 cm, depending on the dry-soil bulk density, the sensing photon flux, and the measurement time.

Filtered wastewater samples were inoculated with Enterococcus faecium and exposed to different pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment energies at 40, 50 and 60°C. A lethal effect of heat treatment on E. faecium can be observed for T > 56°C and a heating duration of 4 min. A treatment with 60°C, 4 min, provokes a bacterial reduction of 4 log. A combined treatment of inoculated wastewater samples with pulsed electric field and heat (40, 50 and 60°C) reduced the bacterial contamination considerably. At a suspension temperature of 60°C pulsed electric field inactivation resulted in a complete bacterial decontamination (8 log reduction rate). Moreover, it was demonstrated that naturally occurring nuclease activities were not changed by the pulsed electric field treatment. In contrast to a thermal treatment with temperature over 72°C, for 4 min., the nuclease activity was reduced up to 90%. In this case, inactivation is only 4 log. The same inactivation rate can be obtained by a combination of heat treatment (60°C) and pulsed electric field treatment (30 J/ml).

Opis:
In recent years transition metal ion doped ZnO has been the focus of intense scientific enquiry. ZnO:Co is by far the most studied member of this family. However, despite the many experimental claims for ferromagnetism, a definitive theoretical explanation for long range magnetic interaction has so far been lacking. Here we present a mechanism which describes not only the origin of this previously inexplicable magnetism but also explains the experimental findings to date and in addition, suggests a recipe for tailoring the magnetic properties. We demonstrate that the magnetism originates from a $Co^{2+}$ oxygen vacancy pair with a partially filled level close to the ZnO conduction band minimum. The long range coupling then occurs via conduction electrons at moderate n doping. This however is not sufficient for room temperature ferromagnetism due to the prohibitive concentrations of O vacancies needed. The experimental findings may then be explained by a combination of our proposed mechanism and the formation of blocked superparamagnetic clusters.

Luminescence decay curves have been measured for the Sm$\text{}^{3+}$ $\text{}^{4}$G $\text{}_{5}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ → $\text{}^{6}$H $\text{}_{7}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ emission in the cubic crystal Cs$\text{}_{2}$NaSm$\text{}_{x}$Eu$\text{}_{y}$Y$\text{}_{1-x-y}$Cl$\text{}_{6}$ (x = 0.005 to x = 1, y = 0 to y = 0.99) over the temperature range 10 K to 300 K using pulsed laser excitation into the $\text{}^{4}$G $\text{}_{5}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ state of Sm$\text{}^{3+}$. The luminescence from the $\text{}^{4}$G $\text{}_{5}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ state of Sm$\text{}^{3+}$ is strongly quenched by both, cross relaxation to nearest-neighbour Sm$\text{}^{3+}$ ions and energy transfer to the $\text{}^{5}$D$\text{}_{0}$ state of Eu$\text{}^{3+}$. We interpret these processes in terms of a recently developed discrete shell model. The dependence of energy transfer from the Sm$\text{}^{3+}$ donor ion to Eu$\text{}^{3+}$ acceptor ions on y is readily studied and modelled. The temperature dependence shows that the cross relaxation occurs mainly by electric dipole vibronic-electric dipole vibronic interaction while in the energy-transfer process magnetic dipole allowed electronic contributions are also involved.
