Opis:
We report results of investigation on the fluorescence induced in sodium vapour by pulses of laser light tuned near the 3S → 4P transition (330 nm). The fluorescence was observed in perpendicular and parallel directions in respect to the laser beam. A depletion of fluorescence intensity corresponding to the 5D → 3P transition (498 nm) was observed along the laser beam. We explain this effect as a result of reabsorption that is caused by intense population of the 3P level due to cascade stimulated processes. The most intense depletion occurs about 20 ns after the laser pulse and it corresponds to the moment of maximal population of the 3P level.

Opis:
Ferromagnetic vortex core switching is investigated using micromagnetic simulations. For that the OOMMF program is used together with a temperature extension we have developed recently. This is a continuum micromagnetic approach, where the well-known Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (valid for zero temperature) is replaced by the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation. In our research we simulate switching of a ferromagnetic vortex core in a flat disk (diameter 200 nm, thickness 20 nm) with material parameters that resemble permalloy. Temperatures in the range 400 K to 700 K are considered. Switching itself is caused by application of a very short oscillating magnetic pulse. Parameters used resemble conditions met in the experiment: oscillation period 141 ps (equal to the peak width) and amplitude 60 mT. Surprisingly, no large temperature- or discretization dependence is found. Reasons for that are discussed.

Paper presents utilized innovative setup for eddy current tomography and possibility of its utilization in testing oxide materials such as ferrites. Previously reported tests concerned materials with high conductivity which is the most typical usage of eddy current tests. Described tomography setup is designed for testing axisymmetric objects thus typical ferrite ring was selected for exemplary testing. Tests were conducted on ring in original state. Afterwards reference defect was created on element and measurements were repeated. Significant difference between tests results were observed, thus potential for utilization in controlling of ferrite rings manufacturing process was confirmed. Finite element method simulations were applied in order to confirm the measurement results. Calculations were conducted in open-source finite element method software, which solves the Maxwell equations in the A-V form. Modelling results confirm possibility of finite element method-based inverse tomography transformation.

Opis:
The following paper presents the results of investigation on the magnetoelastic Villari effect in structural steel magnetized in the so-called Rayleigh region, which corresponds to relatively low magnetizing fields, much lower than coercive field. Two grades of structural steel were investigated during the performed measurements. Obtained results indicate significant correlation between applied mechanical stress and magnetic properties of the investigated materials.

Opis:
Between neighbouring bilayers of lyophilized dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) multilamellar vesicles the total number of water molecules equals 9 H₂O molecules/1 DPPC molecule. One of these molecules is very tightly bound to the lipid molecule, seven are in immobilized (tightly bound) water fraction whereas the last one belongs to mobile water fraction. The rehydration from the gaseous phase of the DPPC model membranes was investigated using hydration kinetics, sorption isotherm, and high power proton relaxometry. The obtained data for DPPC were compared with these obtained for wheat photosynthetic membranes. Rehydrated photosynthetic membranes differ from DPPC model membranes in hydration kinetics. The average hydration time has a similar value: (22.0 ± 2.8) h (photosynthetic membrane) and (19.8 ± 1.6) h (DPPC), however hydration kinetics was described by one-exponential function for photosynthetic membrane, while for model membrane it shows fine double exponential form. The sigmoidal form of sorption isotherm is better fitted using Dent model than by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller formula. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller/Dent deviation parameter b =0.93 either for photosynthetic or for model membranes. The mass of water saturating primary water binding sites equals ΔM/m₀= 0.017 (wheat photosynthetic membranes) and 0.027 (DPPC). The detected by NMR-isotherm study mass of water "sealed" in model membrane structures was about ΔMₛ/m₀=0.182 (about 7-8 H₂O molecules/1 DPPC molecule), and ΔMₛ/m₀= 0.066 for photosynthetic membrane.

Opis:
Hybrid nanostructures are often composed of inorganic parts and "biological" ones. Optimized through million years of evolution light harvesting proteins are hard to mimic synthetically. Promising strategy in search for efficient solar cells is an attachment of selected natural protein systems to inorganic quantum dots. Such experimental hybrid structures should have improved charge separation properties. Among the most promising proteins is peridinin-chlorophyll-protein from Amphidinium carterae (PCP). It has a wide absorption spectrum (420-550 nm), optimized for sunlight. The dynamics of this protein, used in modern nanotechnology has been not addressed yet. In this work we present results of PCP computer modeling using a well established molecular dynamics methodology. The CHARMM27 force field parameters were prepared for this protein and all chromophore components. The system was embedded in a box of water, with proper counter ions, and a number of 10 ns molecular dynamics simulations were run using the NAMD code. It has been found that peridinine chromophores exhibit substantial orientational flexibility but a pair Per612 and Per613 is more rigid than the remaining two carotenoids. Orientation and dynamics of absorption and emission electric dipole moments have been also analyzed. Apparently, the architecture of PCP is not optimized for efficient Per-Chl a energy transfer by the Förster mechanism. Several practical issues related to molecular dynamics simulation of similar hybrid nanostructures are discussed.

For the first time influence of humidity on photoconductivity transient characteristics are studied for antimony sulfoiodide (SbSI) single nanowires. While negative photoconductivity is observed for SbSI gel, made up of large quantity of nanowires, only the positive effect occurs for SbSI single nanowires. Photoconductivity current response on switching on and off illumination in moist $N_{2}$ represents so-called hook anomaly.

For the first time the thermal desorption of $H_2$, $N_2$, $O_2$ and $CO_2$ is presented for antimony sulfoiodide (SbSI) xerogel made up of large quantity nanowires. The desorption has been observed near ferroelectric phase transition established at $T_{c}$=293.0(2) K. The Sievert measurements have shown that the hydrogen uptake is linear function of $H_2$ pressure (when p < 1.1×$10^5$ Pa). The hydrogen storage density in SbSI gel amounted 1.24× $10^{-2}$ wt% (for p = 1.08×$10^5$ Pa at room temperature).

GaAs:C crystal was grown by liquid encapsulated Czochralski technique with large partial pressure of CO in ambient atmosphere p$\text{}_{CO}$/p$\text{}_{tot}$ = 0.2 and investigated using near and infrared absorption, photoluminescence, photoconductivity, photo-induced current transient spectroscopy and photo-Hall measurements. High resistivity of the crystal was found in electrical measurements (10$\text{}^{7}$ Ω cm, the Fermi level at 0.67 eV below conduction band at 300 K). Local vibrational mode revealed increased concentration of carbon acceptor and presence of oxygen related complexes. Photoluminescence spectra were dominated by two bands with peak energies at 1.49 eV and 0.8 eV. The near band gap emission shifts with excitation intensity up to 4 meV/decade. In photocurrent spectrum a strong photoionization band with E = 0.55 eV is observed.

Nanostructures created by living organisms, optimized through millions of years of evolution, can be a valuable inspiration for nanotechnology. We employ atomic force microscopy to examine such structures in materials created by common organisms - caddisfly and diatoms. Caddisfly larvae are well known for their ability to spin silk, which serves as an "adhesive tape" to glue various materials and collect food in aqueous environment. Atomic force microscopy imaging of caddisfly silk, performed for the first time by our team, has shown that its surface is patterned with 150 nm extensions - a feature related to its exceptional underwater sticking abilities. Results of force spectroscopy of protein structures found on the surface are also shown. A characteristic feature of diatoms is that they are encased within a unique silica cell wall called frustules, patterned with 200 nm pores, which allow cellular interaction with the environment. We perform atomic force microscopy imaging of frustules in living diatoms as well as adhesion measurements inside pores.

For the first time current quantization is reported for antimony sulfoiodide (SbSI) nanowires. It has been registered in current responses on electric field switching as well as on illumination on and off. Current steps determined in all experiments have been equal to each other within the experimental error. It has been explained by the quantized change of free carrier concentration in nanowire. Lateral dimensions of SbSI nanowires estimated from quantum steps are comparable with geometrical data reported for the same technology of material preparation.
