Opis:
Linear transformer driver stages are designed to be used as a primary energy storage in high power pulsed generators. In this report, the design and test results of the linear transformer driver stage prototype that delivers ≈100 kA fast pulse with 133 ns FWHM into a ≈0.87 Ω resistive load are described. This stage consists of 20 (100 kV, 20 nF) storage capacitors that are arranged in 10 identical bricks located evenly around the axis of the stage. Each brick contains two capacitors, a multi-gap switch, and the output connector that transfers the energy to the resistive load. The outer diameter of the stage is ≈1.5 m, at a length of ≈20 cm. The stage is developed to demonstrate the possibility of the fast linear transformer driver technology to create high power pulsed generators.

Opis:
The technology and applications of fluorescence spectroscopy are rapidly advancing. In this overview presentation we summarize some recent developments from this laboratory. Two and three-photon excitation have been observed for a wide variety of intrinsic and extrinsic fluorophores, including tryptophan, tyrosine, DNA stains, membrane probes, and even alkanes. It has been possible to observe multi-photon excitation of biopolymers without obvious photochemical or photo-thermal effects. Although not described in our lecture, another area of increasing interest is the use of engineered proteins for chemical and clinical sensing. We show results for the glucose-galactose binding protein from E. coli. The labeled protein shows spectral changes in response to micromolar concentrations of glucose. This protein was used with a novel sensing method based on the modulated emission of the labeled proteins and a long lifetime reference fluorophore. And finally, we describe a recently developed rhenium complex which displays a lifetime near 3ľs in oxygenated aqueous solution. Such long lifetime probes allow detection of microsecond dynamic processes, bypassing the usual nanosecond timescale limit of fluorescence. The result of these developments in protein engineering, sensing methods, and metal-ligand probe chemistry will be the increased use of fluorescence in clinical chemistry and point-of-care analyses.

Opis:
Amorphous $Fe_{80-x}Nb_{x}B_{20}$ (x = 5, 10, 15) ribbons were prepared by single-roller melt spinning method. The thermal, structural and magnetic properties of $Fe_{80-x}Nb_{x}B_{20}$ (x = 5, 10, 15) ribbons were investigated using differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The thermal stability is the lowest for $Fe_{70}Nb_{10}B_{20}$ ribbon and the highest for $Fe_{65}Nb_{15}B_{20}$ ribbon. Along with the increase of Nb content, the supercooled liquid region Δ $T_{x}$ increases, indicating that the amorphous formation ability improves. The primary stages of crystallization of the three ribbons are different. The primary devitrification phases are $Fe_{23}B_6$ type for $Fe_{70}Nb_{10}B_{20}$ and $Fe_{75}Nb_5B_{20}$ ribbons, and α-Fe type for $Fe_{65}Nb_{15}B_{20}$ ribbon. $Fe_{80-x}Nb_{x}B_{20}$ (x = 5, 10) ribbons are ferromagnetic and the $Fe_{65}Nb_{15}B_{20}$ ribbon is paramagnetic. The saturation magnetization ($M_{s}$) decreases with increasing Nb content.

Opis:
Photoreflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence have been used to study the optical properties and electronic structure of InGaAs quantum rods grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Spectral features associated with interband optical transitions localized in the quantum rod and the surrounding quantum well regions are examined. Experimental results are compared with calculations performed within the envelope function approximation. A red shift of the quantum rod- and a blue shift of the quantum well-related optical transitions, along with a significant increase in PL intensity have been observed if an $As_4$ source is used instead of an $As_2$ source during the molecular beam epitaxial growth.
