Opis:
On the basis of Maradudin and McGurn's model we investigate the spectral properties of a two-dimensional photonic crystal, consisting of cylindrical rods disposed periodically throughout a dielectric matrix (the crystal is limited by two surfaces perpendicular to the axes of the rods). The model is supplemented by a new structural element in the form of dielectric rods (also cylindrical in shape) disposed coaxially within the original rods. The centers of both kinds of rods overlap forming a two-dimensional rectangular lattice in the plane parallel to the surface. Thus, the object of our study is a Maradudin-McGurn's model in which the individual rods are replaced by coaxial double rods. For this modified model we search for the optimal set of structural parameter values for which the forbidden energy gaps become greatest, giving especial attention to the role played by the additional inner rods in the emergence of gaps. We arrive at the conclusion that the condition for the opening of absolutely forbidden gaps become more favourable in a photonic crystal with double rods compared with those required in a crystal with simple rods.

Opis:
ArcMelter furnace is commonly used as a method for synthesis of amorphous and nanocrystalline materials. Due to easy and precise chemical composition control, also short time of whole process, this method was used to synthesis of new model hypereutectoid iron alloys. Material for the investigation was 90CrV6 steel. The chemical composition of this steel was modified to obtain the increase of carbides volume fraction with preserving the same chemical composition and mechanical properties of the matrix. The melt was conducted at sub atmospheric pressure of argon. The obtained materials were chemically analyzed by the use of optical emission spectrometer. The metallographic analysis was performed by the use of microscope. Phase composition in cast state was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Chemical composition of the ingots differed from the previously established compositions in the range of 0.08 mass percentage. The high cooling rate resulted in dendritic character of the obtained microstructures. The microstructure of modified tool materials was plate martensite with large amount of retained austenite. The stress induced martensitic transformation in the crack area was observed. Retained austenite destabilization was initiated by the stress relaxation related with material cracking.

Opis:
Incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering spectra were measured for nematic para-azoxyanisole (PAA) and para-azoxyphenetole (PAP) with the energy resolution of ca. 30 μ eV, at Dubna IBR-2 reactor. Data processing contained a careful background subtraction and the multiple scattering correction. The corrected spectra were subjected to a reorientational model fitting procedure. For PAA, a model of two convoluted reorientations - that of benzene rings coupled with the terminals and that of the whole molecule around the long molecular axis - gave a fairly good description of the quasielastic neutron scattering spectrum. For PAP, introducing a third motion - interconformational jumps in the ethoxy terminals - in addition to motions suggested for PAA, gave a good agreement with the measured quasielastic neutron scattering spectrum.

For 4-cyano-3-fluorophenyl 4-butylbenzoate, nematic glassformer at ambient pressure, dielectric relaxation studies were performed under elevated pressure. In the isobaric experiment, on cooling the nematic phase two superarrhenius α-relaxations, ascribed to the reorientations of molecules around short axes and precession of long molecular axes were found and the Arrhenius β-relaxation related to intramolecular motions. Complexity of dynamics at elevated and ambient pressure is similar. Shift towards lower frequencies was found for both α-relaxations.

Opis:
A method for creating linearly polarized positrons and ortho-positronium (o-Ps) atoms with the J-PET detector is presented. The unique geometry and properties of the J-PET tomography enable one to design a positron source such that the quantization axis for the estimation of the linear polarization of produced o-Ps can be determined on the event by event basis in a direction of the positron motion. We intend to use ²²Na or other β⁺ decay isotopes as a source of polarized positrons. Due to the parity violation in the beta decay, the emitted positrons are longitudinally polarized. The choice of the quantization axis is based on the known position of the positron emitter and the reconstructed position of the positronium annihilation. We show that the J-PET tomography is equipped with all needed components.

Opis:
Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy has shown to be a powerful tool to study the nanostructures of porous materials. Positron emission tomograph is a device allowing imaging of metabolic processes e.g. in human bodies. A newly developed device, the Jagiellonian PET will allow positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy in addition to imaging, thus combining both analyses providing new methods for physics and medicine. In this contribution we present a computer program that is compatible with the Jagiellonian PET software. We compare its performance with the standard program LT 9.0 by using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy data from hexane measurements at different temperatures. Our program is based on an iterative procedure, and our fits prove that it performs as good as LT 9.0.

Opis:
The Jagiellonian positron emission tomograph project carried out in the Institute of Physics of the Jagiellonian University is focused on construction and tests of the first prototype of PET scanner for medical diagnostic which allows for the simultaneous 3D imaging of the whole human body using organic scintillators. The J-PET prototype consists of 192 scintillator strips forming three cylindrical layers which are optimized for the detection of photons from the electron-positron annihilation with high time-and high angular resolutions. In this article we present time calibration and synchronization of the whole J-PET detection system by irradiating each single detection module with a ²²Na source and a small detector providing common reference time for synchronization of all the modules.

Opis:
The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was applied to the samples of the human uterine leiomyomas and the normal myometrium tissues taken from the selected place of the uterus during a surgery. The method indicated differences in values of the measured positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy parameters (lifetimes and intensities) between healthy and diseased tissue samples. The additional measurements were performed either in darkness or in presence of visible light which influenced the free radicals present in both kind of tissues and, as a result, made changes in free annihilation and o-Ps decay lifetime and intensity values.
