A two-phase model of dynamical behavior of magnetic liquid influenced by constant magnetic field is considered. The model takes into account mutual interaction of clusters giving skeleton's stiffness and interaction of clusters with free liquid producing attenuation and dispersion of waves for transversally isotropic system. Rotational degrees of freedom are disregarded. Predictions of the model are discussed for variable amount of clusters and compared with experimental data for different magnetic fields.

Opis:
The basic system of chemiluminescence investigations of relevant biological and inorganic compounds consists of Eu(II)/Eu(III) - H$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{2}$. In these studies the increase in Eu(III) ion emission intensity usually results from an effective complexation reaction. In the present study, the N$\text{}_{3}^{-}$ ions are used as a ligand. The increase in the chemiluminescence intensity of the Eu(III) ion, the pH influence (in the range of 4.5-7.5) on the chemiluminescence intensity of the Eu(III) ion, as well as the quenching of the $\text{}^{5}$D$\text{}_{0}$ excited state of the Eu(III) ion are observed due to N$\text{}_{3}^{-}$ complexation. Taking into account the well-known Fenton system [Fe(II)/Fe(III) - H$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{2}$], containing additionally the N$\text{}_{3}^{-}$, Eu(III) or Sm(III) ions, we found that the Eu(III) or Sm(III) ions were excited as a result of energy transfer process. A mechanism of the studied reactions is proposed.

The paper reports on the growth conditions of Li$\text{}_{2}$B$\text{}_{4}$O$\text{}_{7}$ single crystals in both pure and Yb, Co, Mn doped systems. The crystals were grown by the Czochralski method using an intentional concentration of the above-mentioned ions at a level of 0.5 mol.%. The pure and Mn-doped crystals were found to be highly transparent and clear. The crystals doped with Yb$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ had a lot of precipitations making them opaque. The Co-doped crystals were purple-blue in colour and highly transparent. The growth of Yb and Co doped Li$\text{}_{2}$B$\text{}_{4}$O$\text{}_{7}$ crystals was reported for the first time in this paper. Absorption was measured in the range of 200 to 3200 nm, moreover analysis of changes in the absorption spectrum ofγ-irradiated pure and doped Li$\text{}_{2}$B$\text{}_{4}$O$\text{}_{7}$ crystals was performed. Some thermoluminescence properties were measured, e.g. energies and lifetimes of the traps of different charge carriers occurring in the crystals at low temperatures.

Opis:
Radiation induced changes in the luminescence spectrum under influence of UV light, γ-rays, electrons and protons for several concentrations of Ce$\text{}^{3+}$ ions as well as Mg$\text{}^{2+}$ ions in yttrium-aluminum garnet crystals were investigated. To irradiate with γ and electron as grown crystals were used while for proton irradiations the crystals were thermally annealed. For small concentrations of cerium ions (≈0.01 at.%) an increase in the luminescence (about 100%) was observed after gamma irradiation with a dose of 10$\text{}^{5}$ Gy. This increase was due to the growth in Ce$\text{}^{3+}$ ions concentration after γ-irradiation (≈50%), due to the Ce$\text{}^{4+}$ → Ce$\text{}^{3+}$ recharging reaction. For highly doped Ce:YAG crystals (0.1 at%, 0.2 at.%) also an increase, but much smaller (4%), for the Mg codoped crystals (0.1 at.%) was observed. After 1 MeV electron irradiation in the over-threshold type interaction a decrease in luminescence is observed due to the domination of the Ce$\text{}^{3+}$ → Ce$\text{}^{4+}$ ionization process. In the case of the proton irradiation, for small fluencies (≈10$\text{}^{13}$ particles/cm$\text{}^{2}$) an increase in luminescence is observed due to the domination of the recharging processes of Ce$\text{}^{4+}$ ions. For larger fluencies (>10$\text{}^{14}$ particles/cm$\text{}^{2}$) a decrease takes place due to a high level of radiation defects.

Opis:
In this paper we report preliminary results of optical studies on Y$\text{}_{3}$Al$\text{}_{5}$O$\text{}_{12}$ (YAG) crystals codoped with Ce and Mg. By using measurements of luminescence, absorption, and luminescence excitation spectra we demonstrate that although the basic features introduced to the YAG host by the Ce-doping remain intact, the Mg-codoping imposes some significant changes on other properties of the material. These changes are potentially important for laser and/or scintillator applications of YAG:Ce and are due, most likely, to modifications of defect populations in the material. We characterize them by using the techniques of thermoluminescence and excited state absorption under excimer laser pumping. These techniques, interestingly, yield results that seem inconsistent. While the thermoluminescence signal of the Mg-doped sample is strongly reduced, suggesting that trap concentrations in the presence of Mg are suppressed, the excited state absorption signal, which we also relate to the traps, is higher. We offer a tentative explanation of this contradiction between the two experiments that involves a massive transfer of electrons from the Mg-related defects to the excited state absorption centers caused by the excimer pump itself.

Electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetic susceptibility measurements were performed for two $La_3Ga_{5.5}Ta_{0.5}O_{14}$ single crystals doped with 1.96 at.% of Sm³⁺ ions and 3.8 at.% of Er³⁺ ions. Two magnetically inequivalent sites were found to be responsible for the electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of Sm³⁺ ions. Both sites reveal a low (at least C₂) symmetry with $g_{x}$~0.46, $g_{y}$~0.46 and $g_{z}$~0.52. The symmetry of isolated erbium ions is higher than C₂. From electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetic susceptibility experiments it results that the ground state of Er³⁺ ions is Γ⁶ or Γ⁷. Below 51 K electronic transitions within Γ⁶ doublets take place. Between 51 and 60 K, Γ⁶ to Γ⁷ transitions dominate, while above 60 K mainly transitions within Γ⁷ doublet are active.

Properties of chromogenics materials have been of great interest for more than 50 years till now. Some examples of their practical application are photochromic lenses, electrochromic smart windows or even some examples of sensors devices based on gasochromic thin films have already been commercially available on the market. However, recognition of different physical and chemical processes that influence the optical response of such materials under changes in surrounding atmosphere is still an open subject for discussion. This work presents results of experimental and theoretical investigations of optical response of the two selected gasochromic (Ti-V-Ta-W)Ox and (Ti-V-Ta-Nb)Ox oxide thin films under ethanol vapor stimulations. Based on the measured experimental transmission spectra, the complex refraction index characteristics were plotted using optical models elaborated for the VIS-NIR spectral range. The models were further used for the prediction of optical responses of optical gas sensing structures with observed gasochromic behavior.

Hyperthermia treatment is the heating of tumor tissue up to temperatures between 41°C and 45°C, which trigger several physiological reactions in the body. Hyperthermia within tissue can be applied through various mechanisms. One of them is magnetic hyperthermia which uses superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) heated by an externally applied magnetic field. SPIONs can also be used as sonosensitizers in ultrasound hyperthermia increasing acoustic wave attenuation. The impact of SPION concentration on thermal effect during ultrasonic and magnetic hyperthermia was investigated in agar-gel phantom with added magnetite nanoparticles. The presence of nanoparticles in the tissue-mimicking phantom increases the thermal losses of ultrasound energy and temperature of the phantom.

We report that the Ce$\text{}^{3+}$ luminescence decay constant, at 65 ns, is independent of Ce concentrations (from 0.05 to 0.2%) and that it does not change with the presence or absence of the Mg co-dopant.
