Opis:
The properties of synchrotron radiation relevant to single-crystal X-ray diffractometry are: its high intensity over a wide spectral range, a small source size and a low divergence in the 0.1 mrad range, about 90% linear polarization in the horizontal plane, a pulsed time structure, and a time dependent intensity. The latter property requires monitoring of the primary beam intensity and its polarization state which slightly complicates data collection and needs particular attention in the data reduction stage. The other properties of synchrotron radiation, however, extend the range of X-ray diffractometry to experiments which are not feasable with sealed X-ray tubes. The high source intensity makes data collection possible on crystals down to and below 10 μm diameter. Measurement of weak and very weak ("forbidden") reflections profits from high intensity, low divergence, and a good peak-to-background ratio. Data collection at short wavelengths is useful to decrease both absorption and extinction effects and provides the resolution required for high precision structure analysis. Wavelength tun-ability is frequently used to exploit resonant X-ray scattering ("anomalous dispersion") for structure research. Examples are determination of absolute configuration, contrast variation, and phase determination from both single-and multiple-wavelength measurements ("MAD-phasing"). X-ray dichroism and double refraction are observed in the vicinity of absorption edges, causing an anisotropy and polarization dependence of anomalous scattering. This anisotropy may give rise to a violation of extinction rules for glide-planes and screw-axes, with orientation- and polarization-dependent intensities. More recently, these affects have been successfully used to derive (partial) phase information. Other applications are magnetic X-ray scattering and time-resolved X-ray diffraction, the latter exploiting the time structure of the synchrotron radiation source.

Opis:
The semiorganic nonlinear optical crystal of amino-carboxyl acid family, L-cystine hydrochloride (LCHCl) was successfully grown from its aqueous solution by the slow evaporation solution growth method. The solubility, metastable zone width and induction period were determined for the first time experimentally and there by the possibility of growing bulk crystals of LCHCl using deionized water as solvent. The induction period was recorded for the different supersaturation ratios (S=1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5), which reveals that the induction period of LCHCl decreases with increase in supersaturation. The nucleation kinetic parameters such as critical free energy, change of volume free energy, critical radius, number of molecules in the critical nucleus and nucleation rate have been evaluated for LCHCl crystals. The interfacial energy values of LCHCl were determined for different supersaturation ratio by means of varying temperatures. The single crystal X-ray diffraction gives the lattice parameters value of the grown crystals. The second harmonic generation efficiency was confirmed by the Kurtz-Perry powder method. The laser damage threshold energy of the grown crystal indicates that grown crystal has excellent resistance to laser radiation also compared with known other nonlinear optical crystals.

The compound ThIr₂Si₂ crystallizes with a tetragonal crystal structure of the CaBe₂Ge₂-type (space group P4/nmm). Its low-temperature physical properties were investigated by means of magnetization, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements, performed down to 0.35 K. The experiments revealed bulk superconductivity below $T_{c}$ = 2 K. The obtained data indicate that ThIr₂Si₂ is a weakly-coupled type-II BCS superconductor.

A crack in cubic boron nitride crystal was simulated within the ab initio density-functional theory. The lattice constant, critical stress intensity factor K$\text{}_{c}$, which describes crack creation stress, and fracture surface energy Γ were calculated from the elongated 2×6×1 supercell and these quantities agree quite well with the experimental data. We conclude that density-functional theory can be used to estimate crack's material constants.

Radio frequency systems developed for large scientific experiments have become increasingly sensitive to phase changes in their subcomponents. Amongst the most important subassemblies there are definitely coaxial cables that provide interconnections between experiment subsystems. It is commonly known that the major source of phase drifts in coaxial cables is their sensitivity to temperature changes. The phenomenon of phase drifts in cables is discussed in this paper. A phase drift measurement setup is described. Samples of cables of various types used in RF system installations have been measured. Measurement results are presented.

The paper presents the results of investigations concerning the measurement of the attenuation of planar waveguide structures obtained by means of the photopolymerization of the polymer SU8. The applied substrate was sodium-calcium glass. Attenuation is one of the fundamental parameters of optical waveguide, the knowledge of which is of crucial importance in the construction of various kinds of optical sensors. A method of its measurement has been presented, consisting in the recording of the intensity of scattered light making use of CCD camera. The paper deals also with the generation of planar polymer waveguide, taking into account problems connected with the adhesion to glass substrates.

Opis:
The temperature variation of the nuclear quadrupole resonance frequencies in 3,4-dichloro-aniline and 2,6-dichloro-aniline were fitted to three different models available in literature, namely the Kushida model, the Brown model, and a fourth order polynomial. Brown's model with T$\text{}_{0}$=205 K gave the best fit in the case of both compounds indicating that the temperature dependence of the torsional frequencies cannot be neglected in these compounds. The internal torsional frequencies were evaluated from the nuclear quadrupole resonance data by using a two-mode approximation in a temperature range of 77-300 K for the above two compounds. The torsional frequencies lie in a range of 30-60 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ in both compounds and agree closely with the Raman lines obtained in 2,6-dichloro-aniline. The lower frequency mode around 37 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ may be associated with the motion around an axis perpendicular to the benzene ring which is present in both compounds.

Opis:
Oxidative stress and the excess of free radicals accelerate the ageing process of human skin. The application of skin cream with antioxidant compounds could reduce the damage caused by free radicals. In this work we studied two types of skin creams with extracts from aronia (Aronia melanocarpa), elderberry (Sambucus nigra) and bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) because of their high content of anthocyanins, i.e. strong natural antioxidants. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability of the skin creams with berry extracts were studied with ESR spectroscopy. The artificial neural networks were applied to optimize the berry extract concentration and storage time for oil-in-water and water-in-oil creams. Based on experimental results chokeberry and elderberry extracts in oil-in-water cream base revealed higher DPPH radical scavenging ability than in the corresponding water-in-oil. Artificial neural networks predicts maxima of DPPH radical scavenging for 1-week stored elderberry (2.23 mg DPPH/g) and 1-week stored chokeberry (5.84 mg DPPH/g) and bilberry (5.26 mg DPPH/g) 0.76% extracts in oil-in-water creams. The maxima of DPPH radical scavenging for water-in-oil creams were predicted for 6-week stored 0.8% aronia extract, freshly prepared 0.76% bilberry extract and 1-week stored 0.56% elderberry extract. The artificial neural networks predicted values are in good agreement with the experimental values. DPPH-EPR could be combined with artificial neural networks to optimize the extract concentration, and the type of cream base as well as to predict the effect of storage based on a limited number of experiments and samples.

At very low temperature, a quasi-one-dimensional ensemble of atoms with attractive interactions tend to form a bright soliton. When exposed to a sufficiently weak external potential, the shape of the soliton is not modified, but its external motion is affected. We develop in detail the Bogoliubov approach for the problem, treating, in a non-perturbative way, the motion of the center of mass of the soliton. Quantization of this motion allows us to discuss its long time properties. In particular, in the presence of a disordered potential, the quantum motion of the center of mass of a bright soliton may exhibit Anderson localization, on a localization length which may be much larger than the soliton size and could be observed experimentally.

The energetic aspect of the sound radiation has been analyzed in the case of the three-wall corner region. This region is the part of space bounded by three baffles arranged perpendicularly to one another. The Neumann boundary value problem has been solved assuming that the sound source is the vibrating circular plate embedded in one of the baffles of the three-wall corner region. The Kelvin-Voigt theory of a visco-elastic plate has been used which allows to include internal attenuation existing in the plate material. It has been assumed that the sound source is excited to vibrations by the external pressure asymmetrically distributed on the plate surface. The modal coefficients of the acoustic impedance have been obtained in the form of the expressions containing single integrals only. The formula describing the acoustic power of the analyzed sound source has been presented as a fourfold infinite series containing the modal coefficients of the acoustic impedance. The influence of some asymmetric excitations on the acoustic power has been analyzed. The possibilities of the modelling some uniform excitations located on the plate fragment of the small area by the point force excitation has been examined. The influence of the transverse baffles on the acoustic power has also been investigated. It has been determined for which frequency the baffles influence on the acoustic power is the greatest.
