Opis:
Qualification of the most statistically "sensitive" diffusion parameters using Magnetic Resonance (MR) Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) of the control and injured spinal cord of a rat in vivo and in vitro after the trauma is reported. Injury was induced in TH12/TH13 level by a controlled "weight-drop". In vitro experiments were performed in a home-built MR microscope, with a 6.4 T magnet, in vivo samples were measured in a 9.4 T/21 horizontal magnet The aim of this work was to find the most effective diffusion parameters which are useful in the statistically significant detection of spinal cord tissue damage. Apparent diffusion tensor (ADT) weighted data measured in vivo and in vitro on control and injured rat spinal cord (RSC) in the transverse planes and analysis of the diffusion anisotropy as a function of many parameters, which allows statisticall expose of the existence of the damage are reported.

Opis:
An application of magnetic resonance imaging in the field of pharmaceutical technology is presented in this paper. The analysis of diffusion and swelling fronts was carried out for four floating dosage forms using magnetic resonance imaging. The influence of polymer viscosity, its concentration, and type of applied dissolution media on the area of moving fronts was investigated.

Opis:
Hybrid nanostructures are often composed of inorganic parts and "biological" ones. Optimized through million years of evolution light harvesting proteins are hard to mimic synthetically. Promising strategy in search for efficient solar cells is an attachment of selected natural protein systems to inorganic quantum dots. Such experimental hybrid structures should have improved charge separation properties. Among the most promising proteins is peridinin-chlorophyll-protein from Amphidinium carterae (PCP). It has a wide absorption spectrum (420-550 nm), optimized for sunlight. The dynamics of this protein, used in modern nanotechnology has been not addressed yet. In this work we present results of PCP computer modeling using a well established molecular dynamics methodology. The CHARMM27 force field parameters were prepared for this protein and all chromophore components. The system was embedded in a box of water, with proper counter ions, and a number of 10 ns molecular dynamics simulations were run using the NAMD code. It has been found that peridinine chromophores exhibit substantial orientational flexibility but a pair Per612 and Per613 is more rigid than the remaining two carotenoids. Orientation and dynamics of absorption and emission electric dipole moments have been also analyzed. Apparently, the architecture of PCP is not optimized for efficient Per-Chl a energy transfer by the Förster mechanism. Several practical issues related to molecular dynamics simulation of similar hybrid nanostructures are discussed.

Opis:
This studyis a contribution to research on the biomedical and clinical applications of ultrasound. Our research concerns the procedure for the separation of human blood fractions - erythrocytes. Ultrasonic waves can be used for the separation of cells in human blood. From a physical point of view, the human blood is a suspension of liquids and solids (cell elements), and behaves like a non-Newtonian fluid. Our work is devoted to the problem of the motion of red cells in human blood under the influence of ultrasonic wave. It defines a range of the applicability of approximation consisting in neglecting the nonlinear term in the friction force. It also analyzes the general properties of the equation of motion of the cell in the case of large attenuation constants, corresponding to the values of the drift forces for the cells with radii of a few μm. Finally, it defines the applicability criterion of the so-called King-St Clair approximation consisting in the assumption of equilibrium between the drift and the Stokes viscosity forces, neglecting the term representing inertia. This approximation permits analytical estimation of the time constants for the cell transport to points of stable equilibrium in an ultrasonic standing wave field.

Opis:
This work deals with the problem of ultrasound in the context of biomedical and clinical applications. Ultrasonic waves can be used for the separation of cells in human blood. Under the influence of ultrasonic waves cells included in the liquid experience a certain characteristic displacement was referred to as drift. Presented work suggests that only radiation pressure should be taken into account as a mechanism of drifting in this situation. It has been demonstrated that the growth of cells concentration around the points of stable equilibrium is exponential. The time constant of this growth was estimated and the formulae which determine the time needed to obtain the assumed concentration increase have been derived. The theoretical studies of acoustic agglomeration of particles in the liquid have become a new focus in the ultrasonic research.

The test of the results presented in this paper has demonstrated that the most suitable recrystallizing annealing temperature for cold drawn eutectoid steels is 700°C. The microscopic examinations, with the use of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy and the results of mechanical properties tests have shown that only at this temperature it is possible to obtain the fully recrystallized homogeneous fine-grained structure of the pearlitic steel.

The microstructure of Ni/Si-based contacts to GaN has been studied using transmission electron microscopy methods. The transition from non-ohmic to ohmic behavior appears to correlate with the initial limited reaction of GaN with Ni and further Si-Ni reaction-driven decomposition of the interfacial GaN-Ni phase.

Opis:
Semi-insulating GaAs wafers were implanted with MeV As, Ga, O or Si ions at doses ranging from 1×10$\text{}^{14}$ to 5×10$\text{}^{16}$ cm$\text{}^{-2}$. Their structural properties were studied by electron microscopy and the Rutherford backscattering-channeling. Time resolved photoluminescence, electrical conductivity and the Hall effect were used to determine carrier lifetime and electrical properties of the material. Annealing of the samples at 600°C led to the recovery of transport in conduction band. The As, Ga and O implanted samples became semi-insulating, while the Si implanted samples were n-type. Carrier trapping times were short, shorter than 1 ps for the highest dose used. Models explaining the fast photocarrier decay are discussed.

Opis:
Over the last few years there have been many studies of GaAs layers grown at low temperatures (180-300°C), so called LT GaAs. The interest in LT GaAs was motivated by the potential application of 600oC annealed LT GaAs in microwave and fast optoelectronic devices because of its short photocarrier lifetime, reasonable mobility and high resistivity. These properties are associated with the nonstoichiometry of LT GaAs. Recently, studies of comparable material, nonstoichiometric GaAs produced by arsenic ion implantation have been initiated. There is still a strong controversy as to whether the arsenic antisite (As$\text{}_{Ga}$) or arsenic precipitates are responsible for unique electrical properties of both materials. This paper presents the results of structural and electrical studies of high energy As implanted GaAs and comments on relationships between the structure and the resulting electrical properties.
