Opis:
Far infrared magnetospectroscopic studies of negative donor ions (D$\text{}^{-}$), and donors in the presence of many excess electrons in high magnetic fields in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells are reviewed. Both singlet and triplet transitions of well-center D$\text{}^{-}$ions were observed and are in good agreement with recent theoretical calculations. For off-well-center D$\text{}^{-}$ions evidence for a predicted magnetic-field-induced "unbinding" of the second electron was found. In the presence of many excess electrons the D$\text{}^{-}$singlet and -triplet transitions are blue-shifted substantially and evolve into bound magnetoplasmon excitations. Cusps are observed at integral and fractional Landau-level filling factors (ν) in a plot of normalized blue-shift of the D$\text{}^{-}$singlet-like bound magnetoplasmon transition vs. ν. For ν<1, the singlet-like bound magnetoplasmon transition continuously approaches the isolated D$\text{}^{-}$singlet transition with increasing magnetic field, while the triplet-like transition loses strength, irrespective of the electron density. Exact diagonalization studies of a donor ion with a few electrons in a parabolic lateral confining potential show the importance of electron-electron interactions and localization due to the long-range fluctuating potential in explaining this behavior. High pressure studies in a specially designed diamond anvil cell exhibit a continuous evolution from bound magnetoplasmon transitions to isolated D$\text{}^{-}$transitions to neutral donor transitions in a single sample as the pressure is increased and the electron density in the wells is decreased.

Due to the dependence of the tunnel current to material properties like work function, density of states, and spin polarization the scanning tunneling microscope can be used to study a number of solid state physics problems. This will be illustrated with some examples. The presented examples have in common that also the role of the tip properties have to be taken explicitly into account.

Opis:
We review recent experimental advances by the Buffalo group in performing far-infrared magnetospectroscopy under fine tuning of applied high hydrostatic pressure. Experiments are reported for the effects of pressure on Si donors in modulation doped GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells. We clearly observe pressure-mediated competition between free (i.e., Landau level) and bound electron states - the latter arising from both neutral (D$\text{}^{0}$) and charged (D$\text{}^{-}$) donor species. With increasing pressure, there is a progression of the observed spectra from being dominated by cyclotron resonance and the D$\text{}^{-}$ singlet (or singlet-like bound magnetoplasmon) transitions, to showing the D$\text{}^{0}$ 1s → 2p$\text{}^{+}$ line. The main reason for this evolution is the decrease in electrons due to the crossover of the Si levels associated with the Γ (well) and X (barrier) conduction minima. Indeed, for pressures above 30 kbar the Γ(well)-X(barrier) crossover quenches all the transitions. However, we find strong evidence that electrons are independently lost to a trap, which becomes active several kbar below this crossing. A possible candidate for this trap is residual Se impurities in the barriers. We present the results of detailed numerical calculation which are found to agree very well with the measured field dependencies of the cyclotron resonance, D$\text{}^{0}$ and D$\text{}^{-}$ transition energies. In the sample with the highest doping, a new transition is observed for fields and pressures above 7.5 T and 5 kbar. Reasons for this apparent anomaly are discussed.

Low temperature measurements of magneto-photoluminescence and optically detected resonance spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 10~T were carried out on GaAs/Al$\text{}_{0.3}$Ga$\text{}_{0.7}$As quantum well samples grown by molecular beam epitaxy with lateral fluctuation quantum dots produced by growth interruption. Monolayer fluctuations of the quantum well width form lateral quantum dots for which confinement energies are less than Coulomb correlation energies. Five different width quantum wells (2.8-14.1 nm) were grown in a single sample, doped in the barriers with Si donors to allow for photoluminescence of both excitons and trions. We report studies of the optically detected resonance spectra associated with the ensemble photoluminescence of all of the wells including observation of bound-to-continuum internal transitions of trions, both singlet and triplet, and electron cyclotron resonance for the wider wells, which also show a clear bound-to-bound triplet transition. The latter is forbidden by magnetic translational invariance, but can be seen in these samples because this symmetry is broken by the lateral fluctuations, whose characteristic dimensions are greater than the trion orbit size. The two narrowest wells show strong broad optically detected resonance signals associated with inhomogeneously broadened internal transitions of the strongly correlated trions in the lateral dots. The optically detected resonance signals peak well below the calculated positions of electron cyclotron resonance. As expected for localized carriers and excitons, there is no free electron cyclotron resonance. We also present preliminary measurements of optically detected resonance spectra from a single dot.

Electrical conductivity of nanofluids is one of the physical properties which are intensively investigated by researchers. This paper brings contributions in this research area. Electrical conductivity of nanofluids containing various mass concentration of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) nanoparticles suspended in ethylene glycol (EG) were investigated at various ambient temperatures. Temperature was changed from 20°C to 60°C with 10°C step. Measurements were performed with digital conductivity meter (MultiLine 3410, WTW GmBH, Weilheim, Germany) and it was observed that increase in mass concentration of SiO₂ nanoparticles cause increase in electrical conductivity. The same dependence was observed between temperature and electrical conductivity.

The currently applicable PN-EN 1793-1 standard concerning anti-noise devices on roads recommends for acoustic barriers built along traffic routes to have panels characterized by good sound-absorbing properties. The sound-absorbing properties of these panels (wall elements) are to be specified by giving the values of the single-number sound absorption evaluation index $DL_α$ and the absorption property class determined in accordance with the PN-EN 1793-3:2001 standard. Continuous regular acoustic studies of new materials heretofore not used in anti-noise protections are conducted in the Department of Mechanics and Vibroacoustics at AGH. This paper presents the findings of research that started with different porous materials physical absorption coefficient tests. The purpose of these preliminary tests was to pick out materials with best sound-absorbing properties from the group of acoustically tested materials. The chosen materials could be used as a sound-absorbing lining on panels (wall elements) used in the design of acoustic barriers. On the basis of the obtained results, two materials with values of the average physical sound absorption coefficient higher than 0.5 ($α_{favg}$>0.5) were picked out for further acoustic tests. This paper presents results of studies that had the final effect consisting in determining the values of the single-number sound absorption evaluation index $DL_α$ and the absorption property class for two prototype panels of an acoustic barrier the sound-absorbing lining of which was made up of materials chosen after preliminary acoustic studies. The determination of sound-absorbing property classes was carried out both theoretically and experimentally. In order to be possible to reduce the costs of acoustic tests in the future, particularly of new materials in regard to which there is a margin of uncertainty of whether their sound-absorbing properties meet expectations, the authors determined sound-absorbing property classes of acoustic barriers theoretically and then compared theoretical results with the results of experimental tests.

CHARACTERIZATION OF THE ORDER BY ELECTRON DIFFRACTION: In the case of a solid with a local atomic order, we can consider only a statistical description of atomic positions. For a homogeneous phase, this description is given by the two-site occupancy correlation function, the three-site occupancy correlation function, ... etc. The local atomic order is investigated by experiments in which the solid is bombarded with a well-collimated monoenergetic beam of particles (here electrons). Starting from a model describing the force law between an electron and an atomic scatterer and from a model of the solid describing the distribution of atoms in space, a computation of elastically backscattered intensities can be carried out. The latter depends on geometrical parameters which are determined in such a way that one gets the best agreement between the results of calculation and the measurements. This work aims to provide the way of proceeding to calculate the diffuse intensity. The main difficulty in this task appears when we undertake to treat the problem of multiple scattering. We provide here a detailed description of a calculation corresponding to the case of the backscattering of electrons at a single crystal surface covered with a partially disordered atomic layer. Assuming that the coverage in adatoms is small and these adatoms are weak scatterers, we can neglect the multiple scattering events inside the layer. This simplifying assumption leads to an expression of the diffuse intensity in terms of: the Fourier transform on the 2D surface lattice of the pair correlation function; the renormalized transition matrices of the different kinds of adatoms.

A new interpretation of the pretransitional temperature behavior of the static dielectric permittivity and its derivative in terms of the basic thermodynamic quantities: the internal energy, the entropy, and the Helmholtz free energy is presented. It was shown that in the case of strongly polar mesogenic compounds (as the homologous series of alkylcyanobiphenyls) the electric field-induced increments of both the internal energy and the entropy exhibit a critical-like temperature dependence in the vicinity of transition from the isotropic liquid to the nematic phase. As a most important pretransitional effect, it is shown that at a temperature of about 10 degrees before the phase transition, an electric field applied to the isotropic liquids induces an increase in the entropy (Δ S>0) instead of its decrease, as observed far from the phase transition or for the non-mesogenic dipolar liquids.
