Opis:
The paper presents a new mathematical principle for improving the quality indices of acoustic systems with non-uniform structure (e.g. overlapping masks utilizing the entire ultra-acoustic aperture) with respect to the wavelength scale, where each pair of holes serves as an interferometer selecting the signal component at a spatial frequency, using novel design based on the combinatorial sequencing theory, namely the concept of golden numerical rings. The concept can be used for finding optimal placement of structural elements in spatially distributed systems, for example, positioning of holes elements in sonar antenna array. Golden numerical rings are cyclic sequences of positive integers which form perfect partitions of a finite interval [1, S] of integers. The sums of connected sub-sequences of a GRB enumerate the set of integer [1, S] exactly R-times. These design techniques make it possible to configure non-redundant masks in order to avoid interference of signal components of the same spatial frequency because phases of the components are unknown.

Opis:
This work describes a digital positron-lifetime spectrometer based on two ultrafast digitizers. Performance of the digital spectrometer in conditions of a routine measurement is compared with an analogue setup connected to the same detectors. It was found that engagement of the digital setup leads to an improvement of timing resolution (FWHM for $\text{}^{22}Na$) from 169 ps for the traditional analogue setup to 146 ps for the digital setup. The coincidence count rate for 1.2 MBq $\text{}^{22}Na$ source is 75-80 coinc./s for both configurations. These results clearly demonstrate the advantages of the digital timing over the traditional analogue setup.

Idea of the high-resolution eddy current tomography is presented. Proposed system gives possibility of testing cylinder-shaped elements made of both magnetic and non-magnetic materials. To validate the concept, the tomographic measurements are carried out on set of steel cylinders with non-magnetic copper inclusion. Measurements were done during both linear and rotational movement of the element. Achieved results indicate the high sensitivity of system, which creates possibility of its application for non-destructive testing of the elements made of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic materials.

Ultra-bright ultraviolet and soft X-ray beams produced at the Advanced Light Source are achieving world records in spectroscopic resolution. High-resolution spectroscopy in the 20 to 300 eV photon energy range has been applied to photoionization yield and photoemission measurements in atoms and molecules to reveal previously unseen resonance series in doubly-excited autoionizing states of helium, to analyze angular distributions in photoemission from doubly-excited states of helium and other rare gases, to reveal vibrational and ligand-field splitting of small molecules through photoionization, and, to examine photoemission from doubly- and triply-excited hollow lithium atomic states.

Opis:
Hadrontherapy uses charged particles to destroy tumors. For improving the quality assurance tools, specially range verification, the European Commission funded the project ENVISION. This paper summarizes the activities carried out within the work package two devoted to improve the visualization of the spatial distribution of positron emitters that are produced during patient irradiation. Allowing the beam passage implies a reduction in the angular coverage which degrades the range assessment. The aim of the work package two was to investigate the potential use of time-of-flight information for compensating this degradation. The studies can be classified into hardware and software developments. For the former, several ASICs and DAQs have been investigated. Also, the potential application of resistive plate chambers has been assessed. Four dual-head demonstrators have been produced by the end of the project. The software developments are divided into simulations and image reconstruction. Several algorithms able to include the time-of-flight information have been developed. Direct reconstruction has been implemented and compared with conventional maximum-likelihood methods. The results show that direct time-of-flight for on-line reconstruction is possible although iterative algorithms can achieve further improvements. However, time-of-flight alone might not be sufficient due to the low emission rates.

Opis:
As the nuclear radiation has started to be used in a variety of different fields, it is important to be protected from it, and thus the radiation measurement becomes vital. The quality of the performance of a detection system, used for the energy measurements, is important. It is characterized by the width of the pulse-height distribution, obtained for the particles of the same energy (monoenergetic source). The energy spectrum of a radiation source depends on the type and energy of the incident particle and the type of the detector. In this work the energy resolution of a 3"×3" NaI(Tl) detector has been measured for photon energies of 511, 662, 835, 1173, 1275, and 1332 keV, and its variation with the detector-source distance was investigated. The energy resolution of a detector system is obtained from the peak full width at one-half of the maximum height (FWHM) of a single peak (for a particular energy) as a function of detector-source distance. It was found that the energy resolution has decreased with the increasing distance.

A survey will be given on recent advances in the investigation of semiconductor epilayers, heterostructures and superlattices using reciprocal space mapping techniques based on triple-axis diffractometry. It is shown that X-ray reciprocal space mapping yields quantitative information on strain, strain relaxation, as well as composition in such structures. These data are obtained from analyses of the isointensity contours of scattered X-ray intensity around reciprocal lattice points. Further analysis of the diffuse scattering yields also information on defect distribution in the epilayers.

A method of visualization of two-dimensional systems of particles in a large time scale molecular dynamics with application to the domain reorientation process in 2D Lennard-Jones system is presented. The described processing is general and can be used in comparing experimental results of atomic force microscopy with the results calculated using a computer as well as for predicting new phenomena. Domain reorientation process in 2D Lennard-Jones system approaching equilibrium is presented and confronted with the Fourier analysis of the data obtained for different initial parameters and at different states of aggregation. New border domain features accompanying this process are discussed.

RAR1 is a protein required for resistance mediated by many R genes and function upstream of signaling pathways leading to $H_{2}O_{2}$ accumulation. The structure and conformation of RAR1-GST-Tag fusion protein from barley (Hordeum vulgare) in solution was studied by the small angle scattering of synchrotron radiation. It was found that the dimer of RAR1-GST-Tag protein is characterized in solution by radius of gyration $R_G$ = 6.19 nm and maximal intramolecular vector $D_{max}$ = 23 nm. On the basis of the small angle scattering of synchrotron radiation SAXS data two bead models obtained by ab initio modeling are proposed. Both models show elongated conformations. We also concluded that molecules of fusion protein form dimers in solution via interaction of GST domains.

The spatial resolution of the system was tested with different beams of various energies and was found to be around 2 mm. A significant steering effect on the ion beam before hitting the metallic foil was observed at low energies.
