Opis:
We review the recent progress in understanding the Mott transition in disordered systems using the mean-field approach to the strong correlation problem. It is based on a new functional integral formulation of the disordered interacting electron problem. The saddle-point solution recovers a mean-field theory of the strong correlation problem, and becomes exact in the limit of large spatial coordination. We compare the results of the mean-field theory with experimental findings and indicate directions for future work.

Opis:
The Mott-Hubbard transition in the three-dimensional Hubbard model is studied by means of the composite operator method. Analytical and numerical calculations show the existence of a critical value U$\text{}_{c}$ of the Coulomb interaction which separates paramagnetic insulating and metallic phases. In the composite operator method the ratio U$\text{}_{c}$/W, where W is the band width, has the same value as in the two-dimensional case. The ground state of the Mott insulator is characterized by a local antiferromagnetic order where the electrons keep some mobility, but this latter must be compatible with the local ordering. By analyzing the intersite hopping it is possible to establish that some correlation functions behave as order parameters in the insulating phase.

Opis:
The electron correlations in narrow energy bands are examined within the framework of the Hubbard model, generalized by taking into account the correlated hopping of electrons. Electronic conductivity and ferromagnetic ordering stabilization in the system with various forms of electronic density of states are studied. The influence of magnetic field, temperature and the form of density of states on concentration dependence of conductivity and magnetization is investigated. The correlated hopping is shown to cause the electron-hole asymmetry of transport and ferromagnetic properties of narrow band materials.

Opis:
The concept of topological excitations and the related ground state degeneracy are employed to establish an effective theory of the superconducting state evolving from the Mott insulator for high-T$\text{}_{c}$ cuprates. The theory includes the effects of the relevant energy scales with the emphasis on the Coulomb interaction $U$ governed by the electromagnetic U(1) compact group. The results are obtained for the layered t-t'-t$\text{}_{⊥}$-U-J system of strongly correlated electrons relevant for cuprates. Casting the Coulomb interaction in terms of composite-fermions via the gauge flux attachment facility, we show that instanton events in the Matsubara "imaginary time", labelled by a topological winding numbers, governed by gauge flux changes by an integer multiple of 2π, are essential configurations of the phase field dual to the charge. The impact of these topological excitations is calculated for the phase diagram, which displays the "hidden" quantum critical point on verge of the Mott transition that is given by a divergence of the charge compressibility.

Opis:
We present the novel approach to the Bose-Hubbard model using the U(1) quantum rotor description. We formulate a problem in the phase only action using an effective action formalism and obtain analytical formulae for the critical lines. We show that the nontrivial U(1) phase field configurations have an impact on the phase diagrams. The topological character of the quantum field is governed by terms of the integer charges -- winding numbers n. The comparison of the presented results with recently obtained quantum Monte Carlo numerical calculations suggests that the competition between quantum effects in strongly interacting boson systems is correctly captured by our model.

Opis:
We review some recent results obtained for the dynamics of a single hole and for the ground states at finite hole doping in t-J model. Next, we address the role of orbital degeneracy in doped Mott-Hubbard insulators and show examples of effective strong coupling models which include the orbital degrees of freedom. These new t-J models have interesting phase diagrams, with the new magnetic phases stabilized by a competition between magnetic energy and excitonic excitations. It is argued that the doped holes always bind to the excitons and that the new phases identified on the mean-field level give rise to local distortions of the lattice. We conclude that realistic t-J models derived from the electronic structure of particular compounds may be successfully applied for understanding both the observed magnetic ground states, and the results of photoemission experiments, as we have demonstrated recently for NiO.

Opis:
At an early stage of the photoinduced transition from an insulator to a metal in quasi-two-dimensional organic conductors, a coherent motion of electrons is observed in a charge-ordered insulator, but not so far in a Mott insulator. The mechanisms of these different photoinduced charge dynamics are theoretically studied by numerical solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for exact many-electron-phonon wave functions on small clusters of model systems. We use two-dimensional three-quarter-filled extended Holstein-Hubbard models on anisotropic triangular lattices. For a charge-ordered insulator on a lattice simplified from the structure of $α-\text{(BEDT-TTF)}_2I_3$, we indeed find a low-energy collective electronic motion coupled with quantum phonons even if the energy of photoexcitation is away from this energy. For a Mott insulator on a lattice simplified from the structure of $κ-\text{(BEDT-TTF)}_2X$, however, such a collective motion does not appear, and quantum phonons are hardly excited.
