An investigation was carried out to examine the effect of austempering on the microstructure and mechanical properties of nodular cast iron GGG 50 (DIN EN 1563) alloyed with different amount of copper. Optical, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses were performed for microstructural characterization. In addition, hardness and tensile tests were carried out for mechanical properties determination. Specimens were austenitized at 900°C for an hour, then austempered for an hour at 330°C in salt bath and cooled at a room temperature in air. The results indicated that the addition of Cu to GGG 50 encouraged pearlite formation in the matrix structure. In addition, with the austempering heat treatment, the structure was transformed from ferrite + pearlite into ausferrite and retain austenite. Furthermore, for the alloy with 2 wt% Cu addition, it was noted that the graphite nodules diverged from sphericity and Cu was concentrated around the graphite. After austempering, mechanical properties were significantly improved and the highest mechanical properties were found at 1.5 wt% Cu.

Opis:
Friction stir welding was applied to join dissimilar aluminum alloys: wrought 2017A and cast AlSi9Mg. The produced weldment was free from cracks and any discontinuities. The weld microstructure was composed of alternating bands of the welded alloys; however, the alloy that was placed on the advancing side (AlSi9Mg) dominated the weld center. The grain size within the particular bands was similar in both alloys. The hardness profile reflected the microstructure formed during welding. The weld microstructure as well as the shape of hardness profile across the weld were justified by numerical simulation of material flow during welding.

Opis:
The presence of highly dispersed metal particles on solid supports with well-defined microstructure is important in the field of functional materials, active catalysts as well as bionanomaterials for medical applications. Noble metal nanostructures, in particular silver, palladium, and platinum nanoparticles were formed from ammine complexes ([Pt(NH₃)₄]Cl₂, [Ag(NH₃)₂]OH, and [Pd(NH₃)₄]Cl₂) and supported on high ordered mesoporous silica (SBA-15) and aluminosilica matrix. In this work, the distribution, composition and crystal structure of supported noble metal nanoparticles were determined and characterized. Finally the stability of incorporated nanostructures was confirmed. The microstructures of the obtained samples were analyzed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Obtained results indicated that developed procedures of synthesis and modification of mesoporous ordered silica or their derivate by proposed nanostructures are effective and allow to obtain new nanocomposites and nanocatalysts in repeatable and controlled way.

The work provides a brief overview and the latest experimental results concerning the microstructure of gallium nitride. Because of the importance for the optoelectronic and electronic technologies, mainly problems related to the lattice mismatch between substrates and GaN layers are discussed. Three main substrates, sapphire, silicon carbide and high-pressure-grown bulk GaN crystals, are compared. Mosaicity, thermal strains and surface roughnesses of the GaN layers grown on those substrates are reported. The application of high-pressure technologies makes it possible to use temperatures higher by a few hundred degrees with respect to the atmospheric pressure for which the decomposition of gallium nitride occurs at temperatures below 1000°C. Annealing at pressures higher than 10 kbar and temperatures up to 1550° C causes modifications of the microstructure of GaN heteroepitaxial layers on sapphire. For example, their mosaicity decreases as observed by narrowing of the X-ray diffraction peaks. The implanted layers recover upon high-pressure annealing and give a strong dopant-related luminescence.

A simple theory for the Aharonov-Bohm-like effect (dynamical phase) in semiconductor microstructure, is presented in a paper, assuming a "ballistic spin transport". If in one of the arms of microstructure there is an additional periodic magnetic field, the spin wave function acquires a phase shift due to additional spin precession about that field. By introducing quaternion representation of the elements of propagation matrices, one can calculate the transition coefficient of the structure. It is shown that the deep modulation of the conductance could be achieved.

The electron movement in thin semiconductor layer adjoining interface semiconductor-insulator in metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) microstructure with periodic field electrodes is considered. If a voltage of some sufficiently high frequency is applied to such a structure the effect of this high frequency field on a charge carriers in semiconductor is equivalent, in a sense, to the effect of some time-independent effective potential which is a sequence of deep "dynamic" quantum wells, where the charge carriers are localized. It is shown that the electron resonant tunneling may occur in this structure.

Microstructure and surface morphology of AgO nanocrystallites (25 nm) supported on $SiO_2$ and subjected to heat treatment in air up to 500C have been studied by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements. It has been found that heating at 500C resulted in spreading of AgO over silica and formation of quasi two-dimensional amorphous phase (silicate precursor) exhibiting very weak band at $566 cm^{-1}$ have appeared in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Nanocrystalline silver silicate of undefined structure formed at 300-500C.

Structure changes in laser constituted surface layers of aluminium alloys of the systems: Al-Zn, Al-Fe, Al-Fe-Ni, Al-Si were examined. Significant structure refinements and even formation of characteristic precipitates for rapidly quenched microstructure were found. Fine martensitic microstructure was observed in constructional steels of the types: X45CrSi92 (H9S2) and C50 (50G) subject to a laser modification. The study of influence of the chemical composition on the solidification structure and hardness was carried out on a steel 45, as well as on a high speed steel M2 (SW7M), by laser alloying using carbides of the types: VC, Mo$\text{}_{2}$C and the borides of the types: CrB, VB$\text{}_{2}$, B$\text{}_{4}$C. Thermodynamic calculations of phase diagrams were made to predict the changes of the constitution due to laser alloying. A comparison of the solidification structures and the calculated phase diagrams revealed a good agreement, especially for carbides. Boride alloying led to very complex microstructures consisting of various metallic and intermetallic phases.

In this study, microstructure and mechanical properties of modified (Al10Sr) and grain refined (Al5TiB) A356 aluminum alloy were investigated. To determine the effect of modification and grain refining on the microstructure and mechanical properties of A356 alloy, density measurement, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope examinations and tensile tests were performed. As a result of the study, the highest density and the least percentage of porosity were measured for the modified (with Al10Sr) and grain refined (with 1.5% Al5TiB) alloy system. The lowest density values and the highest percentage of porosity were measured for the unmodified and non-grain refined alloy. According to the tensile tests, average ultimate tensile strength and the highest elongation were obtained for the alloy modified with Al10Sr and grain refined with 1.5% Al5TiB alloy. It was determined that average ultimate tensile strength and percentage of elongation increased as the amount of Al5TiB added for grain refinement and modified to A356 alloy increased.

In this study we investigated the morphology and growth kinetics of the interfacial intermetallic compound layers formed between a Cu substrate and Sn-Cu based solders. We simulated the wave soldering process and subsequent ageing both at different temperatures and reaction times. The near eutectic Sn-0.7Cu alloy and Ni enriched Sn-0.7Cu-0.05Ni alloy were studied. Moreover, we measured the tensile strength of the simulated solder joints and analyzed fracture surfaces.

The investigations were made on steel type 20HNM, used for carburizing. The specimens were carburized at different time periods as to obtain differentiated thicknesses of diffusion layers. The carburized layers of thickness HV550 from 0.6 to 1.3 mm were pneumatically shot peened with steel shot 0.8 mm (S280) and the time of exposition of the shot peened surface varied. The value and distribution of residual stresses at carburized layers as well as carburized and shot peened ones were determined. The measurements were done by destructive method. There were recorded the strains of the flat sample after the release of residual stresses in result of removing, by etching, a thin layer of the material. The fatigue characteristics were determined, for the preset technological parameters, at four-point bending. It was proved that the increase in fatigue strength was the result of the changes of value and distribution of compressive residual stresses caused by structural changes which appear at carburized layer after shot peening. By means of Mössbauer spectroscopy, the changes of retained austenite at carburized samples, which appear as the result of surface plastic strain caused by shot peening, were determined. The results of the investigation should be used in technology of hardening of highly loaded gears.

Investigation of the $Fe_{60}Co_{13}Zr_1Ti_3Pr_9B_{14}$ alloy 1 mm diameter rods and 3 mm outer diameter tubes showed a possibility of processing nanocrystalline magnets by direct quenching. It was revealed that the low temperature annealing of the tube samples at 573 K/10 min resulted in an improvement of the intrinsic coercivity that reaches≈1260 kA/m, which was a similar value to that measured for thin ribbon annealed at 973 K/10 min. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the hard magnetic $Pr_2(Fe, Co)_{14}B$ was the single crystalline phase that precipitated during rapid solidification process of the tube and rod samples and during devitrification annealing of the ribbons.

In this study, the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated of different amount Cr (0.1%, 0.5%, 0.9%) added Sn-9Zn eutectic alloys and Weibull statistical analyses were evaluated using ultimate tensile strength. Pure elements (Sn, Zn, Cr) were used for production of alloys and pre-alloying was done and waited in the electrical resistance furnace at 450°C for 1 h to homogenized and poured as ingot in plaster moulds. Then pre-alloyed Sn-9Zn-xCr ingots were melted and poured at 300°C in ceramic moulds prepared investment casting method. As a result of the study, the highest hardness and ultimate tensile strength values were measured in the Sn-9Zn alloy with 0.1% Cr. It was determined that while ultimate tensile strength was decreased, percentage of elongation was increased by increase of Cr amount. According to the Weibull statistical analyses results, the highest Weibull module was calculated by Sn-9Zn-0.1Cr alloy ultimate tensile strength values.

A novel technique, with which in situ $TiB_2$ particles and serpentine channels are introduced to prepare wrought aluminum alloy with higher strength, has been successfully applied to produce semi-solid 7075 alloy slurry. The effects of in situ $TiB_2$ particles and serpentine channels on the microstructure of the 7075 alloy including the grain growth behavior in the semi-solid state of the 7075 alloy were investigated. The experimental results showed that the in situ $TiB_2$ particles and serpentine channels are beneficial to increase the number of solidification nuclei and to promote uniform distribution of α-Al nuclei. As a result, the semi-solid 7075 alloy slurry with globular-like grains has been successfully produced.

Thermally stimulated luminescence of X-ray irradiated β -Ga₂O₃ thin films was investigated. An analysis of the form of the elementary contours making the thermally stimulated luminescence curves shows that recombination processes at the thermally stimulated luminescence peaks with maxima at 77, 135, 178, and 235 K in thin films of β -Ga₂O₃ are described in terms of linear kinetics. The spectral composition of the thermally stimulated luminescence of the thin films was studied. Some methods are employed to determine the activation energies and frequency factors corresponding to the thermally stimulated luminescence peaks. It is established that the recombination processes occurring upon release of the trapping centers in thin films β -Ga₂O₃ are conditioned by diffusion-controlled tunneling recombination due to thermally-stimulated migration of V_{k}-centers.-
