Opis:
In this study, eggshell powder obtained from eggshell waste was used as a dopant in soda-lime-silica glass powders. Various eggshell-doped soda-lime-silica glass samples were produced through melting, and the effect of the eggshell powders on the mechanical properties of the soda-lime-silica glasses was investigated by micro-Vickers indentation tests. The X-ray diffraction results of the eggshell-doped glasses showed that, depending on the dopant content, different phases such as gypsum, nepheline, alunogene, aragonite, cristobalite etc. appeared. These results were different from the X-ray diffraction patterns of pure soda-lime-silica glass powders, where the phases observed included sodium aluminium silicate, sodium aluminum oxide, and silicon oxide. Although the elastic modulus of soda-lime-silica glasses increased with the addition of the eggshell powders, the dopant powders also caused an increase in the hardness of the glasses. Furthermore, it was found that the fracture toughness increased for soda-lime-silica glasses with 0.5 and 1 wt% eggshell powder, while it decreased for samples with eggshell powder contents ≥1 wt%. This behaviour could be explained by an increased depolymerization in the network connectivity of the glass when the amount of eggshell dopant increases.

Opis:
The optical properties of soda-lime-silica glasses doped with eggshell powder were investigated using UV-visible and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. Pure soda-lime-silica glass, which is colorless and transparent, turned dark green after the addition of the eggshell powder. When the eggshell powder content was ≥ 3 wt%, the glass became translucent. The maximum wavelengths in the UV spectra of the soda-lime-silica glasses doped with 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 wt% eggshell powder were observed at 300.20, 277.40, 284.40, and 312.40 nm, respectively. The Fourier transform infrared spectra of the eggshell-doped soda-lime-silica glass samples were very similar to that of the base undoped glass. The bands at approximately 770-820 cm¯¹ could be attributed to the Si-O-Si symmetric stretching of the bridging oxygen between the tetrahedra, while the bands at approximately 970 cm¯¹ were related to the Si-O-Si antisymmetric stretching of the bridging oxygen within the tetrahedra.

Opis:
Glass-to-metal joining is important for improving efficiencies of heat collecting units, employed in parabolic solar collecting systems. In this study, soda lime silicate glass was joined to titanium in air at 700, 800 and 900°C for 5 min by controlled heat treatments. Glass-to-titanium bonding was good and no delamination or macro cracking in glass was observed. During heat treatment, titanium is oxidized in air prior to the reaction with glass. The reaction between oxidized titanium and glass results in bubble formation at joining interface. Bubble formation was found to be decreased with decreasing joining temperature. Thermal stresses developed at glass-titanium junction were modeled by employing ANSYS 14 multiphysics simulation software. For the studied sample profile, soda lime silicate glass, close to the joining interface, experienced rather low residual stresses of the order of 10 MPa maximum and -40 MPa minimum principal stress levels. Good glass-to-titanium bonding and low thermal residual stress are mainly due to similar thermal expansion coefficients of these materials, which was found to be important for achieving successful joining in air.

Opis:
Metal-glass joints are needed to improve efficiencies of heat collecting units used in linear parabolic sun collector systems. Soda lime silicate glass-copper metal joints were prepared at 800°C for 5, 10 and 20 min by furnace treatment in air. Cu is rapidly oxidized with heat treatment in air, reacted with glass and formed some bubbles at reaction interface. Scanning electron microscope investigation suggested copper oxide formation at copper interface, reaction between copper oxide and glass and formation of bubbles at joining interface and some microcracking for the studied glass disk on Cu disk sample profiles. ANSYS14 software simulations suggested joined glass experienced complicated and high residual stress levels due to big thermal expansion coefficient difference and bubble formation at the joining interface. The residual minimal principal stress levels were at the order of -400 MPa for joined glass at interface produced microcracking in glass starting from joined interface growing into glass layer.

Opis:
Soda lime silicate glass was joined to Ti6Al4V alloy in air by heat treatment at 800°C for 10, 20 and 30 min and by subsequent cooling to room temperature with a controlled cooling rate. Stresses, due to thermal expansion mismatch, have developed at glass-metal interface after high temperature joining and cooling down to room temperature. The finite element calculations, performed using ANSYS 14 software, suggested that the glass-metal interface was experiencing rather low maximal and minimal principal stresses due to joining. Highest maximal principal stress level was about 25 MPa and lowest minimal principal stress level was about -40 MPa for used sandwich sample profiles. Heat treatment duration affected tensile bonding strength and interfacial reaction between the glass and the Ti alloy. Scanning electron microscope analysis of glass-alloy joining interface showed that a secondary K, Ca, Ti rich sodium silicate phase was forming in glass, starting at glass alloy interface and that it was growing with the increase in heat treatment duration. Low joining stress levels at the glass-alloy interface for used sandwich sample profile and good bonding between the soda lime silicate glass and Ti6Al4V alloy resulted in creation of successful soda lime silicate glass-Ti6Al4V joints.

In this study, radiation shielding properties of soda-lime-silica glasses doped with different food materials such as the egg shell and the peanut shell powders were investigated. Egg shell and peanut shell powders were obtained by grinding of waste shells in an agate mortar. The SLS glass samples with varying egg shell/peanut shell content were produced by melting. The measurements have been performed using the gamma spectrometer, containing a 3" × 3" NaI (Tl) detector, and connected to a full featured 16K channel Multi Channel Analyzer provided by ORTEC/MAESTRO-32 software.

Opis:
In this study, the mechanical properties of soda-lime-silica glasses were investigated by using micro-Vickers indentation tests, while varying the amount of peanut shell powder added to the glass. Peanut shell powder was obtained by grinding peanut shells. It was added as a dopant to glass at 0.5-5 wt.%, with the final glass samples being produced by melting. Peanut shell addition had led to a decreased density of the soda-lime-silica glasses, and X-ray diffraction data of the peanut shell-doped soda-lime-silica glasses indicated the presence of two crystalline phases, namely, anorthite (Na_{0.45}(Ca_{0.55}Al_{1.55}Si_{2.45}O₈) and magnesium aluminum silicate (MgAl₂Si₃O_{10})₆. The Young's modulus values of the soda-lime-silica glasses increased along with the amount of peanut shell powder added. Peanut shell addition to the soda-lime-silica glasses has also caused increased hardness. Fracture toughness values of these glass samples were in the range of 0.91-1.04 MPa m^{1/2}. Thus, the mechanical properties (e.g. E and K_{C}) of soda-lime-silica glasses could be enhanced through peanut shell addition.

Opis:
The results of comparative studies of the effect of hydrogenation upon structural and optical properties of the commercial soda-lime silicate glasses doped either with monovalent silver or copper have been presented. The samples were characterised by means of the scanning and transmission electron microscopy and the UV-VIS-IR absorption spectroscopy. It has been shown that the annealing of suitably ion-exchanged specimens in gaseous hydrogen atmosphere could be considered as an effective procedure for obtaining composite materials of expected properties correlated with the induced changes of the morphology of both the glassy matrix and the dopant.
