Opis:
In this paper, we investigate the variation of band gap width in a ternary 1D photonic crystal with a left-handed layer versus variation of thicknesses and refractive index of second layers. We study these variations in two states, normal and oblique incidents for both TE and TM polarizations. We observe that the variations of band gap width versus thickness of layers are sensitive to the refractive index of second layers. For oblique incident both of variations are shifted towards the large/small frequencies by increasing the incident angles in TE/TM polarization, respectively.

Localized waves in disordered left-handed materials are studied using a generalized coupled-dipole model. Resonances in an open system consisting of randomly distributed electric and magnetic dipoles are investigated. A new type of long-lived resonance modes localized at the boundary of the system is found. They resemble evanescent waves responsible for a superfocusing phenomenon by a left-handed lens.

Opis:
This article presents a theoretical and numerical discussion of the reflection and transmission analysis through a lossy left-handed material slab embedded between two semi-infinite dielectric media. The properties of the lossy left-handed material are given in detail and the required equations for the electromagnetic plane wave propagation are derived to solve the problem. The main important contribution of this article is the characterization of left-handed material that is different from its counterpart known in the literature. After introducing the left-handed material slab, the analytical solution is found for the powers carried by an electromagnetic wave. Then, the reflected, the transmitted, and the loss power are computed in terms of the incidence angle, the frequency, and the slab thickness in the numerical results with the emphasis on the loss factor.

Opis:
We study all-evanescent eigenmodes of a one-dimensional infinite periodic structure with alternating left-handed and right-handed materials that propagate perpendicularly to the surface or guided eigenmodes. Investigation of dispersion properties of such Bloch modes is shown to be crucial for understanding of an efficient radiation energy transport across the periodic multilayer structure. Frequency pass bands and gaps are found as a function of the two orthogonal wave vectors: the Bloch wave vector k$\text{}_{B}$ and the surface wave vector k$\text{}_{S}$. We demonstrate that pass bands of both TE- and TM-polarizations can exist and, under certain conditions, may overlap.

Opis:
Studies of the interaction of polarized light or particles (including electrons, e¯, or positrons, e⁺) with asymmetric forms of matter has been of interest to scientists since the discovery of chirality and the subsequent development of particle physics. Researchers have been interested in e⁺ interactions with chiral molecules for decades, but with mixed and indecisive results. After reviewing the field, we speculated that the e⁺ or positronium (Ps) might interact differently with chiral pairs of large single crystals, i.e., the left-handed or right-handed asymmetric forms of the crystals - and subsequently observed significant differences in "free positron" annihilation and intensities in the evaluation of left-handed or right-handed quartz single crystals. This result may be understood to be a "particle stereorecognition" phenomenon. To extend this line of inquiry we crystallized mm scale L- or D-alanine crystals and performed positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy measurements using a ²²Na positron source. Alanine crystals were obtained via slow evaporation of water in a Dewar, or from water/acetone solvent in a temperature-controlled environment. These methods resulted in small ( ≈0.5 cm/side) or large ( ≥1.0 cm/side) crystals, respectively. While some intensity (I₂) results from left-handed and right-handed crystals varied in positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy analysis, the errors associated with the measurements do not indicate a stereorecognition of alanine via positron interactions.

Opis:
The work highlights peculiar features of synthesis and summarizes important properties of nanoparticles and films based on two types of oxide magnets: with spinel and perovskite-type structures. The attention is drawn to the differences in the processes underlying the formation of crystalline phase in the materials of each group. It is shown that for the spinels, the formation of weakly agglomerated crystalline nanoparticles can occur in the process of synthesis, but for the perovskite-like magnets, the formation of crystalline nanoparticles requires additional high-temperature treatment. It is demonstrated that synthesized nanoparticles and films may find wide practical applications, particularly as the heat mediators in hyperthermia treatment therapy, as components of left-handed media, ferroelectric-ferromagnetic layered structures and composite microwave resonators. They also may be used as integral parts of composite structures, which possess magnetic-field-controlled properties and display giant magnetocaloric effect.
