Opis:
The optically created exciton will be self-trapped if its coupling to phonons is strong enough, and will moreover be self-decomposed if the electron and the hole couple to phonons in an opposite way. The bistability between the parity-conserved and parity-broken self-trapped excitons was observed in alkali halides. The situation is most dramatic if the bistability between the parity-broken self-trapped exciton and the ground state (with no exciton) comes into play since the electron-hole pairs may then be spontaneously generated at every lattice site, resulting in the electronic and structural phase transition. The neutral to ionic phase transition observed in a few organic charge transfer compounds under applied pressure or decreasing temperature can be considered as an example. Recent experiment revealed that TTF-chloranil, among others, is subject to photo-induced transient phase change over hundreds of unit cells per one photon. The dynamics of this process can be described in terms of self-trapping and self-multiplication of a photo-generated charge transfer exciton along the chain through the attractive dipolar interaction. This description of phase transition in terms of exciton dynamics will provide a new paradigm of materiology.

Opis:
Thermodynamical properties of an Ising model of a ferromagnetic thin film deposited onto a ferromagnetic substrate of rough surface contacting the thin film were studied. The influence of the interaction between the substrate and the film as well as the effect of the substrate surface roughness were found to be describable in this model by a temperature dependent random surface field. Magnetization of the thin film was calculated for various temperatures at different assumed values of the substrate Curie temperature as well as for various surface roughness grades of the substrate and various couplings between the film and the substrate.

Opis:
The spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is utilized to study the spin dependent electronic structures of solids and solid surfaces. The spin- and angle-resolved valence band spectra of ferromagnetic Ni are investigated by comparing with an atomic model and a one-electron band calculation. The electron correlation effects which appear in the spin-resolved photoemission spectra are discussed. The spin dependent electronic structures of S atoms adsorbed on Fe(100) surface are also investigated.

Opis:
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments on SnTe crystals doped by Sm, Eu, and Yb were performed to determine the valency of these ions in the SnTe matrix. The analysis of the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy valence-band spectra revealed that Eu and Yb are divalent while Sm is trivalent in SnTe. These conclusions were confirmed by studies of the binding energies of core levels (4d-levels of Yb and 3d -levels of Sm and Eu), which are not presented here.

The paper reports structural investigations of a series of liquid alkanes, from n-C$\text{}_{6}$H$\text{}_{14}$ (n-hexane) to n-C$\text{}_{16}$H$\text{}_{34}$ (n-hexadecane), differing by two methyl groups (CH$\text{}_{2}$)$\text{}_{2}$, n-C$\text{}_{20}$H$\text{}_{42}$ (n-eicosane) and n-C$\text{}_{30}$H$\text{}_{62}$ (n-triacontane) performed in temperatures from 20°C to 70°C. The average angular distribution of intensity was determined by diffraction of monochromatic X-ray radiation Mo K$\text{}_{α}$, λ = 0.7107 Å and the functions of radial distribution of electron density were calculated for the studied compounds. Mean structural parameters including distances between molecules and atoms, coordination numbers as well as correlation parameters were obtained. The suitability of the method for structural studies of n-alkanes with the number of carbon atoms from 6 to 30 is discussed.

Opis:
Anharmonic polaronic model is considered. The model consists of the electronic subsystem, described within the extended Hubbard model, coupled to anharmonic local phonons. By the canonical Holstein-Lang-Firsov transformation the electron-phonon interaction term is ruled out and, then, the effective electronic Hamiltonian is obtained by averaging over the ground state of the phononic subsystem. It is shown that anharmonicity introduces two main additional factors as compared with the harmonic case. First, the band narrowing factor is less rapidly decaying function of the electron-phonon interaction strength. Second, anharmonicity introduces further renormalization of the on- and intersite interaction between fermions.

Opis:
A diffractometrical method for quantitative evaluation of structure perfection level in silicon single crystals containing various types of near surface distortions is described. The method is based on the spatial distribution analysis of the reflected intensity in the Bragg case of diffraction. To implement the proposed approach one has to satisfy the condition of the so-called low X-ray absorption because in this case the penetration depth of diffracted radiation exceeds the corresponding value of extinction length. It permits us to obtain a remarkable value of noncoherent reflectivity due to defects placed in deep (on the extension of absorption length) regions of a crystal and therefore, to increase the sensitivity of scattering for low distortions of crystal lattice. Using the method described here the extension of various disturbed layers as well as the level of the static Debye-Waller factor of a crystal can be determined. The effect of surface distortions caused by mechanical treatment and the influence of the following thermal annealing as well as irradiation by high energy protons on the defective structure of the samples were investigated.

Opis:
Thermally stimulated luminescence of X-ray irradiated β -Ga₂O₃ thin films was investigated. An analysis of the form of the elementary contours making the thermally stimulated luminescence curves shows that recombination processes at the thermally stimulated luminescence peaks with maxima at 77, 135, 178, and 235 K in thin films of β -Ga₂O₃ are described in terms of linear kinetics. The spectral composition of the thermally stimulated luminescence of the thin films was studied. Some methods are employed to determine the activation energies and frequency factors corresponding to the thermally stimulated luminescence peaks. It is established that the recombination processes occurring upon release of the trapping centers in thin films β -Ga₂O₃ are conditioned by diffusion-controlled tunneling recombination due to thermally-stimulated migration of V_{k}-centers.-

Photovoltaics (PV) is becoming a mainstream electricity provider and the need for PV cells will spike compared to current demand. Solar power is based on obtaining electricity from solar radiation by using either photovoltaic cells or concentrated solar power (CSP). Both systems have different requirement to the area and advantages. However, there are several common disadvantages, which are related to the initial cost and regulatory issues that prevent investors from starting up such projects. Based on these premises the utilization of the solar power was examined in this study by highlighting the world's sustainable energy potential and investment statistics. Therefore research analysis related to the solar energy potential is presented as well. Although, the sustainable energy is the future of the world and requires slightly less amount of expense after installation, compared to conventional energy sources, the installation costs are the predominant factor of the utilization of the sustainable energy technologies. Furthermore, this study makes an overview of the world's solar power capacity today and makes prediction for the future. This study presents comprehensive market data together with forecasts for the short-run, while the role of PV is discussed considering the demand of energy.

The role of nonpolar optic phonon scattering and of umklapp acoustic phonon scattering is analyzed for a delocalized positronium atom in ionic crystals at elevated temperatures. At temperatures above which they become essential both of these scattering mechanisms contribute to the imaginary self-energy of positronium renormalizing its acoustic deformation potential constant. It was such a renormalization that was recently observed experimentally for delocalized positronium in MgF$\text{}_{2}$ crystal. We put forward the theoretical explanation of these experiments based upon the model of nonpolar optic phonon scattering of positronium. An effect analogous to that observed in MgF$\text{}_{2}$ is predicted for crystalline quartz above the temperature of (α-β)-phase transition.

Opis:
The structure of the surface and spectra of the cathodoluminescence of Y₂O₃:Eu thin films when changing the activator concentration in the range 1.0-7.5% by mole obtained by RF sputtering were investigated. On the base of the shape of the cathodoluminescence spectra at different concentrations of the activator, the possibility of irregular solutions creating of yttrium and europium oxides and the structural features of the small and large crystallites forming the film Y₂O₃:Eu is shown. The dependence of the cathodoluminescence intensity on the energy of the exited electrons and current density of electron irradiation was established.

Birefringence and ultrasonic measurements were done for ferroelectric RbHSeO4 crystal. Influences of both stresses (σ$\text{}_{i}$) and pressure on the properties and phase transition were studied as well. The observed dependence of δ(Δn$\text{}_{b}$) = f(σ$\text{}_{5}$) shows hysteresis loop characteristic of ferroelectric phase whereas the dependence of δ(Δn$\text{}_{c}$) = f(σ$\text{}_{6}$) shows hysteresis loop characteristic of ferroelastic phase. Birefringence measurements prove the phase transition to ferroelectric phase at 373 K. Additionally, the phase transition was found at 398 K. The new phase may be regarded as an incommensurate one. On the grounds of the stresses influence the phase diagram is constructed in coordinates T, σ$\text{}_{5}$. The linear decrease in T$\text{}_{c}$ with increase in pressure is observed in ultrasonic studies and it is similar to the results obtained in DSC measurements.

Opis:
A brief review of the experimental data on the metastable DX-centers in AlGaAs is presented. The experimental proofs of the two-electron nature and of the intermediate, one-electron state of the DX-centers are discussed. We collect the available experimental data on the ground state, electron-emission and capture energies and we discuss the nature of the lattice barrier. The effect of splitting of these energies in AlGaAs alloys and the consequences of the splitting on the capture and emission kinetics are analyzed. The different character of the barrier and of the alloy splitting for donors of the IV and VI group is underlined. The necessity to consider the interdonor Coulomb interaction when discussing the experimental data is also pointed out.
