Opis:
Modelling and experimental investigation of U-h characteristics of fiber-optic reflective displacement transducer, with the aim to obtain the maximal sensitivity and high speed in the displacement and vibration measurements, are presented. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment was obtained, therefore the limiting sensitivity of transducers can be predicted by modelling. Configurations of non-contact fiber optical transducers of the maximal possible sensitivity and speed were found, the metrological parameters which do not depend either on the degradation of the light source intensity or on elements used in the measurements, as well as on the value of the mirror reflection coefficient and changes due to aging. All that increases the reliability of measurement system, which is of utmost importance for process monitoring.

This paper presents the results of measurements of the refractive index and thickness of the waveguide layer SU-8. The mode sensitivity has been calculated as a function of the thickness in a bimodal structure. The differential interference was analyzed concerning modes of the same types $TE_0-TE_1$ and $TM_0-TM_1$ and modes of the same order ($TE_0-TM_0$, $TE_1-TM_1$). The thickness of the layer was determined when the interferometer is most sensitive to changes of the refractive index. It has been proved that the sensitivity of the structure can be increased by adding a nanometric layer with a high refraction index ($n_{A}$=1.975) on the waveguide layer.

Dynamic calibration of the pressure transducers and accelerometers are carried out by applying dynamic mechanical inputs to them. Determination of those transducers' sensitivities, defined as the ratio of electrical output of the transducer to the mechanical input, is an important task for calibration laboratories. Data obtained during calibration are processed in order to have the peak values of the input and output signals which are sampled by data acquisition boards. Different approximations are made such as fitting the data in the range of 90% of the maximum value for parabola or half-sine waveform. It is clear that waveform model used and also the resolution and the sampling rate of the data acquisition boards have effects on the accuracy of the sensitivity of the transducer. For the investigation, the electrical output signal of the transducer corresponding to the mechanical input is recorded and simulated with different resolutions and sampling rates. Those data are processed for the waveforms of half-sine, parabola, Gaussian distribution. The effect of the waveform model of the input quantities on the dynamic sensitivity is discussed in this paper.

The first half of this paper explains how X-ray diffraction can be sensitive to surface structure and morphology, even though X-rays interact only weakly with matter and hence penetrate deeply into the bulk medium. The basis of the crystal truncation rod construction is given, which demonstrates this sensitivity in a formal way. This is then illustrated with details of two problems of current interest which have been studied with synchrotron radiation at the National Synchrotron Light Source in New York. The structure of the Si(111)7×7 reconstructed surface, as determined in the vertical direction by X-ray reflectivity, is presented as a straightforward application of crystal truncation rods. Then we discuss alkali adsorption on Ag(110) surfaces which induces a "missing row" reconstruction. We measured the trends in the induced structural parameters as a function of Cs coverage on Ag(110), but found the greatest changes were associated with the location of the Cs instead. At high coverage this is ordered only in a one-dimensional sense, but as the coverage is reduced it becomes partially registered in the second direction, and, surprisingly, occupies a site higher above the surface.

Opis:
The parameters of radiation sensitivity of the oxygen-doped fluorite crystals were calculated in a one-dimensional model. The limit concentrations of the color centers as a function of the concentration of the oxygen impurity in the fluorite crystal were defined. Fluorite crystals with anti-Frenkel defects in the anion sublattice of the crystal have a specific property: the discolored after irradiation crystal being irradiated repeatedly with ionizing radiation retains the "memory" of the preceding irradiation. Using an ion chain model this paper studies under what conditions the "radiation memory" effect can arise in the MeF₂-O²¯ crystals as well as the extent of its contribution into the overall radiation sensitivity of the crystal.

Opis:
Solid state nuclear track detectors have been applied in different studies including nuclear physics, particle physics, archaeology etc. Makrofol, a particular group of thermoplastic polymers, is used for radon detection. High background track numbers in the foils cause big uncertainties for places where the radon concentrations are quite low. Therefore, it is of great importance to lower the background track signal as much as possible, without reducing the sensitivity of the foils. The present study reports track density and sensitivity of Makrofol-DE after thermal annealing. The unexposed foils were heated at temperatures ranging from 110C to 140C for 10 min with the aim of observing changes in the number of background tracks. As a result a reduction in the background track density was observed. In order to observe the change in the sensitivity, pre-heated and unheated foils were exposed to alpha radiation in a radon chamber. At the temperatures of 110, 120, and 130°C, the track density in the heated and unheated exposed foils is quite similar. An increase was observed in the track density in heated exposed foils at 140C.

The computer methods for determining the map of colour-contrast sensitivity of the retina, suitable for mass screening of the earlier disturbances of visual and circulatory systems of humans, are discussed. We present a liquid refractive index sensor based on a photonic crystal waveguide slab structure. Sensing mechanism employed in this study is based on the shift in cut-off wavelength as the lattice holes are selectively infiltrated. Three-dimensional plane-wave expansion and finite-difference time-domain methods are used to determine the band structure and transmission spectra, respectively. First, the sensitivity of the device is analyzed for the structure where only the first rows of holes adjacent to the line-defect are infiltrated. In addition, this analysis is repeated for a range of hole diameters. Second, the effects of infiltrated holes which are placed in the line-defect are investigated. As these infiltrated central holes are introduced, the proposed device exhibits 5.3 times improved sensitivity.

Recently, we have shown that the approach of depth sensitivity of magneto-optic ellipsometry can be generalized to selectivity from different materials in nanostructures. We use the condition number as the figure of merit to quantify the magneto-optic selectivity to two different magnetic contributions in magnetic nanostructure. The method is demonstrated on nanostructures containing magnetically hard Fe particles in surface layer of soft FeNbB amorphous ribbon. We separated both magnetic contributions from measurement of hysteresis loops using magneto-optic Kerr effect in longitudinal configuration. Magneto-optic selectivity is discussed and theoretical model on the basis of effective medium is compared with experimental data of longitudinal magneto-optic Kerr effect depending on angle of incidence.

The influence of non-magnetic central node defect on magnetic hysteresis of regular square-shaped segment of magnetic dot array with perpendicular uniaxial anisotropy under the thermal activation was investigated via computer simulations based on stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The aim of this study is to point out the simultaneous effect of anisotropy and thermal activation to the dynamical properties of magnetic dot arrays.

Planar waveguides in which some range of the waveguide was modified by depositing on it a layer of some other dielectric, are called composite optical waveguides. Such a structure is based on a planar waveguide obtained by means of ion exchange $K^+-Na^+$ on glass, and covered by an adequately profiled dielectric layer. This kind of structure is of much interest due to considerable possibilities of taking measurements, which may contribute to a further development of the optoelectronic sensor. Especially required are sensor systems in chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, and others. Investigations on the properties of composite layers constitute a continuation of investigations concerning the construction of interferometers, which are very sensitive, cheap and easy to be produced.

This publication presents experimental measurement methodology which allows to determine the characteristics of sensitivity planar differential interferometer. To confirm data reliability additional measurements were done such as simulations in OptiBPM software by Optiwave. Curves received from two methods: experimental and theoretical, were summed up and compared. Conclusions were made on their basis, for example the influence of used wavelengths or refractive index of single mode waveguide cladding on curves of sensitivity differential interferometer using planar waveguide received from the ion exchange method.

GaN/AlGaN photodetector that exhibits new interesting property is presented. Its spectral sensitivity depends upon bias voltage. Under positive or low negative bias the detector is sensitive mainly to the ultrafiolet radiation absorbed by AlGaN layer 3.7-3.8 eV. Under negative bias U$\text{}_{B}$ below -4 V, the detector is sensitive mainly to the radiation absorbed by GaN (3.4-3.6 eV). The effect can be explained based on numerical calculations of the electric field and potential profiles of this structure. The damping of GaN signal is attributed to activity of 2D electron gas formed on the GaN/AlGaN interface by spontaneous polarization. The reappearing of the signal is attributed to tunneling of holes through AlGaN, stimulated by a high electric field.

There is a demand for highly refractive index sensitive devices simultaneously insensitive to temperature (T) changes. We investigate both T and refractive index sensitivity of long-period gratings coated with 100 nm thin high refractive index (n ≈ 1.9 at λ = 1550 nm) silicon nitride $(SiN_{x})$ film. The long-period gratings with period of 500 μm were induced in standard Corning SMF28 fibre using electric arc and nanocoated with $SiN_{x}$ by radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition method. As a sensorial effect we investigated resonance shift with temperature variations (from 30 to 70°C) for measurement in deionized water ($n_{D}$ = 1.33) and glycerine ($n_{D}$ = 1.46). In case of measurements in water for resonance observed at λ = 1510 nm, refractive index sensitivity of - 85 nm/RIU and temperature sensitivity of 0.09 nm/C $(H_2O)$ were obtained which gives refractive index-T sensitivity ratio (RI/T) of - 944°C/RIU. Refractive index and T sensitivity of sensor covered with $SiN_{x}$ film increased to - 618 nm/RIU and 0.22 nm/°C, respectively. Thanks to nanocoating deposition, refractive index-T sensitivity ratio was improved by factor of 3. In case of measurements in glycerine significant influence of glycerine's thermo-optic coefficient on obtained results was observed. It is worth noticing that $SiN_{x}$ coating stabilizes sensing behaviour of the sensor.
