Opis:
Heating of electrons by electric fields smaller than that required for generation of domain oscillations was investigated in samples of EL2-rich semi-insulating GaAs. Current-voltage characteristics were measured as a function of temperature between 268 K and 330 K. They exhibit a sublinear shape which is interpreted as a result of an enhanced electron capture on the EL2. The capture rate and the electron temperature as a function of the electric field was determined. A fitting procedure gave the value of electron capture cross-section on the EL2 to be 2.7 × 10$\text{}^{-13}$ cm$\text{}^{2}$ which agrees with literature data.

We present studies of resonant excitation of self-assembled CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots. Photoluminescence excitation measurements revealed existence of sharp resonances, common for photoluminescence lines attributed to different quantum dot charge states. We conclude from the ensemble of photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation results that we observe energy transfer in coupled quantum dot pairs.

Effect of silicon doping on the elastic-plastic transition of GaAs crystal is demonstrated by results of nanoindentations and ab initio simulations. The performed experiments show that an increase of silicon concentration causes a decrease of the contact pressure at the onset of permanent nanodeformation of GaAs crystal. Ab initio calculations demonstrate that presence of Si atoms in the crystal lattice suppresses the shear modulus as well as the pressure of equilibrium between zinc-blende and rock-salt phases of GaAs. Furthermore, it is argued that the effect of dislocations pinning to Si dopants is essential for clarification of GaAs yielding.

Opis:
Nanostructures created by living organisms, optimized through millions of years of evolution, can be a valuable inspiration for nanotechnology. We employ atomic force microscopy to examine such structures in materials created by common organisms - caddisfly and diatoms. Caddisfly larvae are well known for their ability to spin silk, which serves as an "adhesive tape" to glue various materials and collect food in aqueous environment. Atomic force microscopy imaging of caddisfly silk, performed for the first time by our team, has shown that its surface is patterned with 150 nm extensions - a feature related to its exceptional underwater sticking abilities. Results of force spectroscopy of protein structures found on the surface are also shown. A characteristic feature of diatoms is that they are encased within a unique silica cell wall called frustules, patterned with 200 nm pores, which allow cellular interaction with the environment. We perform atomic force microscopy imaging of frustules in living diatoms as well as adhesion measurements inside pores.

Opis:
The rehydration of salmon sperm deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride $(C_{19}H_{42}ClN)$ complexes was observed using hydration kinetics, sorption isotherm, and high power proton relaxometry (at 30 MHz). The hydration kinetics shows (i) a very tightly bound water not removed by incubation over silica gel ($A_0^{h}$ = 0.061 ± 0.004), (ii) a tightly bound water saturating at $A_1^{h}$ = 0.039 ± 0.011, with the hydration time $t_1^{h}$ = (1.04 ± 0.21) h, a loosely bound water fraction (iii) with the hydration time $t_2^{h}$ = (19.1 ± 3.2) h and the contribution progressively increasing with the air humidity. For the hydration at $p//p_0$ = 100%, after $t_0$ = (152.6 ± 2.5) h of incubation the swelling process begins. The swelling time was $t_3^{h}$ = (12.5 ± 5.4) h, and the swelling amplitude $A_3^{h}$ = 0.140 ± 0.016. The sorption isotherm is sigmoidal in form and is fitted by the Dent model with the mass of water saturating primary binding sites Δ M/$m_0$ = 0.102 ± 0.021. Proton free induction decay is a superposition of the immobilized proton signal (Gaussian, with $T_{2S}$* ≈ 30 μs) and two liquid signal components coming from tightly bound ($T_{2 L_1}$* ≈ 100 μs) and loosely bound water fraction with the amplitude proportional to the mass of water added ($T_{2 L_2}$* ≈ 1000 μs).

Opis:
Important bioinorganic objects, both living and fossilized are as a rule characterized by a complex microscopic structure. For biological samples, the cell-like and laminar as well as growth ring structures are among most significant. Moreover, these objects belong to a now widely studied category of biominerals with composite, inorganic-organic structure. Such materials are composed of a limited number of inorganic compounds and several natural organic polymers. This apparently simple composition leads to an abnormal variety of constructions significant from the medical (repairs and implants), natural (ecological effectiveness) and material science (biomimetic synthesis) point of view. The analysis of an image obtained in an optical microscope, optionally in a scanning electron microscope is a topographical reference for further investigations. For the characterization of the distribution of chemical elements and compounds in a material, techniques such as X-ray, electron- or proton microprobes are applied. Essentially, elemental mappings are collected in this stage. The need for the application of an X-ray diffraction microprobe is obvious and our experience indicates on the necessity of using the synchrotron-based devices due to their better spatial resolution and good X-ray intensity. To examine the presence of the organic compounds, the Raman microprobe measurements are good options. They deliver information about the spatial distribution of functional groups and oscillating fragments of molecules. For the comprehensive investigation of bioinorganic material structural and chemical features, we propose the following sequence of methods: optical imaging, elemental mapping, crystallographic mapping, organic mapping and micromechanical mapping. The examples of such an approach are given for: petrified wood, human teeth, and an ammonite shell.

Opis:
The present paper concerns the elastic-plastic nanodeformation of Te-doped GaSb crystals grown by molecular beam epitaxy on the n-type of GaSb substrate. The conventional analysis of nanoindentation data obtained with sharp triangular (Berkovich) and spherical tip revealed the elastic modulus (E=83.07± 1.78 GPa), hardness (H=5.19±0.25 GPa) and "true hardness" (H_{T}=5.73±0.04 GPa). The registered pop-in event which indicates the elastic-plastic transition in GaSb crystal points towards the corresponding yield strength (σ_{Y}=3.8±0.1 GPa). The origin of incipient plasticity in GaSb crystal is discussed in terms of elastic-plastic deformation energy concept.

Time-resolved correlation measurements were performed to examine the statistics of photon emission from a single quantum dot at high excitation levels. The range of strong powers was determined by the saturation of intensity of excitonic lines. The significant contribution of pulsed background luminescence forced us to sophisticated analysis of the photoluminescence spectra. For quantum dots grown in the Stranski-Krastanov mode, one-photon emission was found to a good approximation. Fluctuation type quantum dots exhibit a significant level of multiphoton emission.

For the first time the thermal desorption of $H_2$, $N_2$, $O_2$ and $CO_2$ is presented for antimony sulfoiodide (SbSI) xerogel made up of large quantity nanowires. The desorption has been observed near ferroelectric phase transition established at $T_{c}$=293.0(2) K. The Sievert measurements have shown that the hydrogen uptake is linear function of $H_2$ pressure (when p < 1.1×$10^5$ Pa). The hydrogen storage density in SbSI gel amounted 1.24× $10^{-2}$ wt% (for p = 1.08×$10^5$ Pa at room temperature).

We present the possibility of GaAs:Ge,Te crystals growth from the melt (liquid encapsulated Czochralski method) with partially occupied, at ambient pressure, the A$\text{}_{1}$ localized electronic state of Ge$\text{}_{Ga}$ impurity. In as-grown crystals the amphotericity of Ge and creation of defects (deep acceptor complexes, precipitates etc.) during cooling after growth limit the free electron concentration below the value necessary to populate the A$\text{}_{1}^{0}\text{}^{/}\text{}^{+}$ level. Special annealing of the samples, which enlarges the free electron concentration, was used. The occupation of A$\text{}_{1}^{0}\text{}^{/}\text{}^{+}$ level, at ambient pressure, was observed by pressure dependent Hall effect measurements.

We report on confocal microscopy imaging of hybrid nanostructures composed of silver nanowires and corroles. Both nanomaterials were separated by a 30 nm thick $SiO_2$ spacer in order to inhibit fluorescence quenching. The results show that for such a hybrid nanostructure the average enhancement of the fluorescence intensity reached 2.5. Importantly, the coupling to plasmon excitations in metallic nanowires leaves no effect on the fluorescence spectrum of the organic molecules.
