Opis:
The formation of coalesced oxide films on atomically clean polycrystalline chromium has been studied with Auger electron spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry at temperatures between 30°C and 400°C. The data are consistent with an initialed chemisorption of oxygen on the clean Cr followed by nucleation of chromium oxide after 2 L of exposure followed by lateral growth to form a thin, coalesced, saturated oxide film about 0.8 nm thick at 30°C. The saturated oxide was thicker at higher temperatures, being about 80 nm thick at 400°C. Detection of a CrO$\text{}^{+}$ secondary ion was associated with chemisorbed oxygen, while O¯ ion originated from chromium oxides based upon correlation with chemical changes in the low-energy Auger spectra. Keating of the coalesced oxide caused considerable changes in both the low-energy Auger spectrum as well as the secondary ion emission. Both these as well as time-dependent, reversible changes in secondary ion emission were interpreted as structural rearrangements of the chromium oxide resulting in relative changes of oxygen either adsorbed on the surface or incorporated into chromium oxide.

An introduction is given on the subject of magnetic metallic multilayers. These artificial structures appear to display several fascinating physical phenomonena which are of fundamental as well as technological interest. Two examples, the magnetic coupling between ferromagnetic layers across a non-magnetic spacer layer and the giant magnetoresistance are emphasized in this article. For each of these, key experimental observations are reviewed followed by a discussion of the physical principles underlying the phenomenon.

Opis:
Spatially selective introduction of ultrathin ZnTe layers (1 to 3 mono-layers) into CdTe allows the study of special superlattice structure, corresponding to a monomolecular plane-host crystal system. Particular attention is given to the strain state control of the inserted ZnTe monolayer. High resolution electron microscopy is used to measure the local lattice distortion: the method yields the location and the total amount of Zn per period, and the results are compared with X-ray diffraction data. Optical properties of these superlattices are also presented. All results show the ability to control ultrathin pseudomorphic layers of ZnTc within CdTe, with limited Zn segregation, and of high crystalline and optical quality. In addition, they can be fitted within the framework of elasticity theory for the structural data, and of a finite quantum well model for the optical ones, even in the ultimate limit of only one nominal ZnTe monolayer.

Recent experimental results based on X-ray photoelectron diffraction from a Pb(110) crystal are discussed in terms of surface roughening and surface melting. In comparison to other reports on Pb(110) surface roughening it is recognized that the correct determination of the roughening transition on (110) surfaces of fcc metals may be intrinsically difficult because of anisotropy. A novel technique for investigating the temperature-dependent surface free energy is described. The method involves the quasi-steady-state shape of periodic surface profiles on Au(111) and Au(100) single crystals. First results are reported for two crystallographic zones (111)⟨112⟩ and (100)⟨110⟩ of Au. These results illustrate the strong anisotropy of Δγ/γ of ~23% and ~ 4% at T = 0 K for the (111)⟨112⟩ and (100)⟨110⟩ zones, respectively. The data suggest that the low-index surfaces of Au(111) and (100) are not likely to roughen at T ≤ T_{M}.

Magnetoresistance measurements were performed on an n-type PbTe/PbEuTe quantum well and weak antilocalization effects were observed. This indicates the presence of spin-orbit coupling phenomena and we showed that the Rashba effect is the main mechanism responsible for this spin-orbit coupling. Using the model developed by Iordanskii et al., we fitted the experimental curves and obtained the inelastic and spin-orbit scattering times. Thus we could compare the zero field energy spin-splitting predicted by the Rashba theory with the energy spin-splitting obtained from the analysis of the experimental curves. The final result confirms the theoretical prediction of strong Rashba effect on IV-VI based quantum wells.

Opis:
The dominant mechanism responsible for the optical detection of the Mn$\text{}^{2+}$ magnetic resonance in Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te (x = 0.095, 0.007) is explained. By either change of the external magnetic field or by setting the conditions for the Mn$\text{}^{2+}$ magnetic resonance, we could change the relative efficiencies of the two competing excitonic recombination processes. By lowering magnetization at the magnetic resonance, recombination via the acceptor bound exciton channel, which is mainly nonradiative, is enhanced. Then, a large up to 50% decrease in the total photoluminescence efficiency was observed in the optically detected magnetic resonance experiment. Such observation allows for verification of the large efficiency of the Auger-type transition responsible for the nonradiative decay of the acceptor bound exciton.

The luminescence from the $\text{}^{4}$G $\text{}_{5}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ state of Sm$\text{}^{3+}$ is strongly quenched by both, cross relaxation to nearest-neighbour Sm$\text{}^{3+}$ ions and energy transfer to the $\text{}^{5}$D$\text{}_{0}$ state of Eu$\text{}^{3+}$. We interpret these processes in terms of a recently developed discrete shell model. The dependence of energy transfer from the Sm$\text{}^{3+}$ donor ion to Eu$\text{}^{3+}$ acceptor ions on y is readily studied and modelled. The temperature dependence shows that the cross relaxation occurs mainly by electric dipole vibronic-electric dipole vibronic interaction while in the energy-transfer process magnetic dipole allowed electronic contributions are also involved.

We investigate the effect of hole localization on the magneto-luminescence emission of a two-dimensional electron system formed in a modulation-doped semiconductor heterojunction. The emission of heterojunctions containing a dilute delta-layer of Be acceptors at a large distance from the interface is compared with that of Be-free samples. A narrow Fermi-edge singularity emission line is observed at low temperature in Be-doped samples, involving electrons in the second confined state. The evolution of this line in a perpendicular magnetic field shows common characteristics with previously reported results in high mobility samples not containing Be. A new emission line appears abruptly at filling factor 2 originating by the recombination of electrons in the lowest Landau level with free valence holes, independent of the presence of Be. The abruptness of this transition, which is also observed in some samples at filling factor 1, reveals a simultaneous change in the electron system over a macroscopic sample area. The new optical emission shows marked deviations with respect to the single-particle behavior, which are tentatively interpreted as the formation of a complex state involving a free photocreated hole and the electron system. This complex unbinds when the Fermi level crosses the mobility edge.

We have used an all-optical photoluminescence-imaging technique to measure excitonic transport in three types of GaAs structures in which the excitonic transitions vary from allowed direct-gap excitons to forbidden, doubly-indirect Type-II excitons. We f nd remarkable differences in the transport properties of these excitons. Our studies show that bulk free-exciton transport exhibits an anomalous laser power-dependent diffusivity, whereas quasi-2D interfacial excitons and Type-II cross-interface excitons do not. Additionally, we observe localization of cross-interface excitons at the potential disorder induced by the heterointerface roughness.
