Opis:
Studies of the temperature dependence of the guest order parameter for binary mixtures of the dichroic azo dye in the homologous series of the p-cyano-p'-alkylphenylcyclohexane were performed. Odd-even effect for the order parameter value was observed. A correlation between the shift in the nematic-isotropic transition temperature after dye addition and the orientation of the guest molecules in the nematic host was discussed.

Opis:
The general solution is found to a bilinear reduction of the higher order nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Except for the previously known special cases having multisoliton solutions, the solution has the form of a single envelope solitary wave or wave train for all other values of the parameters. We conjecture that the generic solution is limited to such a narrow class of functions because the bilinear system is overdetermined.

Opis:
Angular distributions of very high energy photoelectrons from Xe and Kr, excited by a 50 ps, 1054 um laser, are presented. In Xe strong, narrow structures 45° off the polarization axis appear on above-threshold ionization peaks within a limited energy range centered around 9U$\text{}_{P}$, where U$\text{}_{P}$ is the intensity-dependent ponderomotive energy. Under the same conditions the effect is much weaker in krypton. These structures are discussed using a very simple classical model as well as sophisticated single active electron calculations and the Keldysh-Faisal-Reiss theory. We conclude these structures are the result of single-electron dynamics involving rescattering of a tunneling component of the continuum wave function.

The collisional broadening and shift of 494.5 nm spectral line of neon arising from 2p$\text{}^{5}$3p-2p$\text{}^{5}$ns7s transition, emitted from a low-pressure glow discharge in pure neon and neon-helium mixtures have been measured. The values of pressure broadening and shift coefficients were determined. Experimental data of 494.5 nm line as well as our earlier results for spectral lines originating from the 2p$\text{}^{5}$3p-2p$\text{}^{5}$ns7s (n = 5, 6) transitions are compared with those resulting from the Kaulakys and Ueda theories of pressure effects on Rydberg states.

The electrical characterization of the Al/p-Si/P3HT/Ag organic-on-inorganic diode was done by current-voltage, capacitance-voltage and conductance-voltage methods. The values of ideality factor and barrier height of the diode were determined from the current-voltage characteristics and found as 2.32 and 0.77 eV, respectively. These values were also determined from Cheung's functions and Norde's method due to the non-ideal behavior of the diode. The electronic parameters obtained from the various methods indicate a good consistency with each other. The density of interface states for Al/p-Si/P3HT/Ag organic-on-inorganic diode was found to be $7.64 × 10^{10} cm^{-2} eV^{-1}$. The obtained electrical parameters of the Al/p-Si/P3HT/Ag organic-on-inorganic diode are higher than that of the conventional Ag/p-Si Schottky diodes. This indicates that the electrical properties of the silicon Schottky diodes can be controlled using organic interfacial layer.

Opis:
The complex dielectric permittivity ε*(ν,T) = ε'(ν,T) - iε''(ν,T) of n-p-(ethoxybenzylidene) p'-propylaniline has been measured in the frequency range from 1 Hz to 13 MHz and temperature range from 360 K to 180 K on heating and on cooling the sample. Dielectric relaxations have been found in nematic and solid phases. A detailed analysis of the observed processes has been performed and the parameters describing molecular dynamics have been evaluated. The comparison of results with those obtained for the other Schiff bases is discussed.

Opis:
The applicability of the modified Lippincott δ-function model method is tested for binary mesophase mixtures. Using this method, the polarizabilities, polarizability anisotropies and order parameters of binary mesophase mixtures containing N-(p-propoxy-benzylidene)-p-pentylaniline are evaluated and compared with the reported values. A close agreement is observed between the estimated values and reported values.

We consider equations governing propagation of a monochromatic laser beam coupled to its third harmonic in a nonlinear medium. The system proves to be non-integrable in the sense of Painleve. However it is partially integrable for all values of its parameters. We further check the possibility of solving the equations by the Hirota bilinear method. The system is found to be solvable this way provided that the complex phase of the third harmonics is equal to tripled phase of the fundamental mode (modulo i) and also the amplitudes of these modes are in special proportion. This result corresponds to the previously known condition of existence of the sech soliton solutions. Furthermore, the Hirota scheme is found to work only for exact resonance, i.e. for the ratio of the dispersion coefficients equal to the ratio of frequencies. Finally, all these conditions may only be satisfied for single envelope solitons of the cubic Schrödinger type.

We look for conditions of existence of soliton solutions for equations governing propagation of a monochromatic laser beam coupled to its second harmonic in a nonlinear medium. The system proves to be non-integrable in the sense of Painlevé. However it is partially integrable for some values of its parameters. For the first time the intrinsic luminescence in the undoped (CaO-Ga$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$-GeO$\text{}_{2}$) glasses with different composition has been found and investigated in the 80÷300 K temperature range. The new glasses of high chemical purity and optical quality with stoichiometric composition similar to that in calcium-gallium- germanium garnet (Ca$\text{}_{3}$Ga$\text{}_{2}$Ge$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{12}$), trigonal Ca-gallogermanate (Ca$\text{}_{3}$Ga$\text{}_{2}$Ge$\text{}_{4}$O$\text{}_{14}$), and Ca$\text{}_{3}$Ga$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{6}$ crystals were obtained by the high-temperature synthesis method. The luminescence and photoexcitation spectra analysis, supported by EPR spectroscopy data, yields the following results: (i) the UV-excited non-elementary broad emission band with maxima at roughly 500 nm and 420 nm in the (CaO-Ga$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$-GeO$\text{}_{2}$) glasses is due to recombination of ensemble of the transient hole O$\text{}^{-}$ centres; (ii) the emission bands with maxima at nearly 380 and 710 nm, which were distinctly revealed in glasses with the Ca$\text{}_{3}$Ga$\text{}_{2}$Ge$\text{}_{4}$O$\text{}_{14}$ and Ca$\text{}_{3}$Ga$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{6}$ compositions, are assigned to the luminescence of UV-induced electron centres of two different types. Possible models of the luminescence centres in (CaO-Ga$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$-GeO$\text{}_{2}$) glass network are discussed.

Using the general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package based on the fully relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method, we have reported the electric dipole transition (E1) parameters such as wavelengths, weighted oscillator strengths, transition rates (or probabilities) and line strengths for 5s-5p and 5p-5d transitions in Xe²⁺. In calculations, the Breit interaction and quantum electrodynamic effects have been included as perturbations. The calculated values for energy levels including valence and core-valence correlation have been compared with other available experimental and theoretical values in literature. Our transition results can provide useful data for, in particular, experimental works in future.

This paper gives a brief introductory overview of quantum chaology, with particular reference to recent experimental work involving the use of semiconductor heterostructures. In the presence of a tilted magnetic field, a double-barrier resonant-tunnelling device incorporating a quantum well produces a chaotic stadium for electron motion. The basic properties of this system are described. It is shown how resonant magnetotunnelling spectroscopy provides firm experimental evidence for the effect of scarred wave functions on a physically-measurable property, in this case the measured current-voltage characteristics of the device. The paper concludes with some speculations concerning for the development of this field.

The paper presents configuration interaction (CI) calculations of both the length and velocity forms of the oscillator strengths for 1s2s$\text{}^{1}$S$\text{}^{e}$ → 1s2p$\text{}^{1}$P$\text{}^{0}$ transition in the He atom. For the first time the agreement between the length and velocity values to within about 0.045% has been achieved.

Opis:
The energy spectrum of a quantum dot made from IV-VI narrow gap semiconductors is studied. The calculations of the energy levels as functions of the dot radius are performed. When the anisotropy of the bare energy spectrum is strong, the energy levels are calculated using Fal'kovskii's adiabatic approximation for multiband systems. When the quantum dot material has an inverted band gap with respect to the host, the low-energy states within the fundamental gap are shown to arise.
