Opis:
The dynamics of the methane, methyl, and carbon dioxide adsorption to the (001) surface of cubic magnesium oxide (periclase) has been studied within the ab initio molecular dynamics in the temperature range between 0 and 1000 K. For methane, neither chemisorption nor physisorption has been observed in the considered temperature range, whereas methyl group and carbon dioxide build chemical bond to the MgO surface at temperatures 350 K and 450 K, with adhesive energies of 0.218 and 0.935 eV, respectively.

Opis:
Carbon-free steels of the type Fe-Co-(Mo,W) have been known for long to attain very high hardness levels through precipitation hardening. However, the classical ingot metallurgy route tended to result in brittle materials. Here it is shown that the powder metallurgy route through mixing of elemental powders, pressing and sintering results in materials with excellent combination of hardness and transverse rupture strength if the processing parameters are adjusted accordingly, in particular sintering and heat treatment being critical stages that should result in chemically homogeneous and fine-grained microstructure. If properly processed, these steel grades offer excellent red hardness since the hardening intermetallic phases are much less sensitive to overaging than the secondary carbides in standard high speed steels.

Opis:
A group theoretical parametrization scheme of the bilinear orbit-lattice interaction is presented. Using this scheme a general analytical form of this interaction in the point-charge electrostatic model has been obtained. Based on this general analytical form the second-order parameters of the bilinear orbit-lattice interaction have been calculated for a tetrahedral complex. For cubic complexes a microscopic interpretation of the G-tensor components in the long-wavelength approximation of acoustic waves is given for the first time. The presented scheme of parametrization as well as the method of calculations of the interaction parameters may be extended to other models of the crystal field.

This is a brief description of how to protect quantum states from dissipation and decoherence that arise due to uncontrolled interactions with the environment. We discuss recoherence and stabilization of quantum states based on two techniques known as "symmetrization" and "quantum error correction". We illustrate our considerations with the most popular quantum-optical model of the system-environment interaction, commonly used to describe spontaneous emission, and show the benefits of quantum error correction in this case.

Opis:
The notion of a spin-orbit interaction arises from consideration of dynamics of multielectron atoms, i.e. systems of N electrons in a spherical potential. This notion is essentially a single-particle one. We sketch its origin as a second-order correction when Dirac four-component wave equations for an electron in external electromagnetic fields are simplified to the two-component Pauli spinors. The constraints in spinorial degrees of freedom consist, roughly speaking, in neglecting the small component of the electron four-function. The spin-orbit interaction term serves to compensate effects of the small component. The crystalline field induces some deviations from spherical symmetry of an isolated atom, which yields some modifications of the spherical form of the spin-orbit interaction operator. These modifications can be described in terms of a number of tensor operators adapted to appropriate chains of subgroups of the spherical symmetry group. We present a classification of independent tensor operators and discuss the relevant parameters for f-ions.

Irradiation of cerium(IV) complex of octaethyl bisporphyrin Ce[OEP(-2]$\text{}_{2}$ with visible light, in the presence of CCl]$\text{}_{4}$ as an electron acceptor, leads to their photooxidation and π cation radical formation. The process was followed using electron absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. Electronic configuration in neutral mono- and bisporphyrin (sandwich) complexes were compared to the one of the neutral species. Photoirradiation of sandwich octaethyl- and tetraphenyl bisporphyrins, in the presence of an electron donor (triethylamine) results in their photoreduction on different pathways. Formation of the [Ce(III)(TPP)(-2)TPP(-2)]¯ and [Ce(III)(OEP)(-1)(OEP)(-2)] complexes was followed by absorption and electron spin resonance spectroscopy.

The parametrized models are compared with counter-intuitive consequences of the non-relativistic Schrödinger treatment. For both 4f$\text{}^{ q}$, 5f$\text{}^{ q}$ and d$\text{}^{9}$ systems in condensed matter, the energy levels must be strongly influenced by correlation effects. The parametrization of intensities is conceptually very different for f$\text{}^{ q}$ and d$\text{}^{9}$ compounds. The bandwidths of absorption and luminescence are discussed and related to the Born-Oppenheimer factorization.

A Taylor expansion of dipole-dipole interaction in 2D systems defines a Landau-like local dipolar interaction in spin derivative field. The lowest order of this interaction gives the dipolar anisotropy. The next non-zero order is responsible for the appearance of magnetic vortices and hyperbolic defects. The following non-zero orders indicate the occurrence of higher topological defects such as double circle and of modulations. The arrangement of self-screened topological defects is discussed in agreement with the Monte Carlo simulations and experimental observations. Excited localized modes associated with these defects are classified.

Brief summary concerning properties of the polymer matrix incorporated with inorganic, e.g. oxide particles, micro/nanocomposites and opportunity to use these composites as optical materials for modern optics and optoelectronic devices is presented in the work. Structure and morphology of the several sets of the new polymer micro/nanocomposites based on the microcrystalline cellulose incorporated with micro/nanoparticle of various oxides (NaNO₂, La_{1-x}Sm_{x}VO₄, La_{1-x}Eu_{x}VO₄ and K₂Eu(PO₄)(MoO₄)), were prepared by "dry" and "wet" cool pressing procedure. Morphology of these composites was described as ensemble of cellulose plates and located gains of the oxide particles. Temperature dependences of complex dielectric permittivity and luminescence properties of the composites were studied. Temperature and electromagnetic field frequency dependences of the dielectric permittivity revealed influence of oxide particles on the characteristics of the microcrystalline cellulose. Both wide band (matrix emission) and narrow lines (RE ions emission) of visible luminescence (350-750 nm range) of the composites is excited in the range 250-550 nm. The luminescence characteristics displayed effect of cellulose on the electronic system of the Sm³⁺ and Eu³⁺ ions and effect of oxide particles on the cellulose matrix was shown, too. Spectral characteristics and high intensity of luminescence showed perspectives of studied composites to be used as light converters in LED and elsewhere as optics luminescent materials.

Co, Fe and Ni clusters of nanometer size, deposited on silicon and graphite (highly oriented pyrolytic graphite), were observed by a scanning tunneling microscope. Deposition as well as the scanning tunneling microscope measurements were carried out in an ultrahigh vacuum system at room temperature. Detailed analysis of Co cluster height was done with the scanning tunneling microscope equipped with a ferromagnetic tip in the magnetic field up to 70 Oe. It is found that bigger clusters (few nanometers in height) exhibit a dependence of their apparent height on applied magnetic field. We propose that such behaviour originates from the ferromagnetic ordering of cluster and associate this effect to spin polarized tunneling.

The local chemical properties of bimetallic surfaces, which are often drastically different from those of each of the components, will be discussed. Using CO adsorption as a probe molecule it will be shown for two model systems, Au/Pd(111) and Pt/Ru(0001), that their chemical properties depend decisively on the local surface structure and that the correct interpretation of area integrating spectroscopic and kinetic data obtained from such surfaces requires detailed knowledge of their (defect) structure and of the distribution of the different components in the surface layer. It will further be shown that information on the local chemical properties of specific structural elements such as monolayer islands and monolayer island edges, and specific surface ensembles can be gained by applying high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy imaging and area integrating spectroscopic techniques in combination to bimetallic surfaces whose morphology and composition is varied in a systematic and controlled way. Based on experimental results adsorption on a monolayer A / substrate B system is suggested as a model for gaining information on the modifications in chemical properties of AB alloy surfaces due to metal-metal interactions.

Opis:
Protective ultra-thin barrier films gather increasing economic interest for controlling permeation and diffusion from the biological surrounding in implanted sensor and electronic devices in future medicine. Thus, the aim of this work was the investigation of the film thickness influence on the gas permeation barrier of ultra-thin, cytocompatible tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:H) films on polyimide (PI) foils. Plasma-activated chemical vapor deposition (direct deposition from an ion source) was applied to deposit these diamond-like carbon films. The results indicate high barrier to hydrogen gas permeation by all film thicknesses (<0.2% H₂ permeation compared to uncoated PI). While the thickness of the ta-C:H layers has minor influence, the number of layers, realized by one- or double-side deposition strongly impacts the barrier effect. Finally, tests under tensile stresses showed minor impact in the elasto-plastic deformation regime, but the expected strong increase of gas permeation after exceeding the tensile strength and film fracture.

The influence of L-threonine admixture on the dielectric properties of triglycine sulphate (TGS) crystals was studied. With increasing concentration of the admixture in the solution from which the crystals were grown, their maximum permittivity and spontaneous polarization were found to decrease, their Curie point was found not much different than that for pure TGS crystals (322 K), the coercive field and bias field increased. The domain structure of the obtained crystals was also studied by the liquid crystal method.
