Craniodental remains of a medium−sized beaver from the early middle Miocene of Hambach (MN 5) in the Lower Rhine Basin of northwestern Germany are described and assigned to Steneofiber depereti. The relatively rich material (6 mandibles and 56 isolated teeth) was collected from a single locality, Hambach 6C, and comprises specimens representing juvenile to very old individuals. This makes it possible to assess the morphologic and metric variability of a single population of Steneofiber depereti. Metrically, the mandibular tooth rows compare favorably in size to those of three subspecies described from the Loire Basin in France: Steneofiber depereti janvieri, Steneofiber d. caliodorensis, and Steneofiber d. depereti. Therefore in our opinion, division into subspecies cannot be applied to S. depereti in general. The difference in size between the smaller beaver from Hambach and the contemporaneous larger S. d. carnutense from the Loire Basin is remarkable. The taxonomy of early middle Miocene medium−sized castorids, referred to Steneofiber depereti, Steneofiber subpyrenaicus, and Chalicomys jaegeri is discussed. The presence of the derived beaver C. jaegeri in MN 4 to MN 6 is questioned and assignment to Steneofiber suggested. The occasional appearance of single C. jaegeri features in S. depereti supports the existence of a European lineage from the Orleanian S. depereti to the Vallesian C. jaegeri. The taxonomic status of S. subpyrenaicus remains unresolved.

Chitinozoans from seven cores in the Middle Ordovician upper Goldwyer and Nita formations are documented, and three assemblages are delineated. Six out of twelve species found in the Canning Basin, in eastern Gondwana, are also found in Laurentia, confirming the close relationship between chitinozoans in the two palaeocontinents. The assemblages correlate with Zone 05 of Combaz & Peniguel, and the undefined zone immediately overlying the Cyathochitina jenkinsi Zone in the biozonation designed for Laurentia. The relationship between contemporaneous assemblages in Baltica, Avalonia and the northern Gondwana Domain is discussed with a small number of species in common with Baltica and Avalonia, and no definite links with northern Gondwana. Two new species Calpichitina windjana, and Belonechitina vibrissa are described.
Omówiono Chitinozoa ze środkowoordowickich odcinków siedmiu rdzeni wiertniczych obejmujących strop formacji Goldwyer i formacji Nita z basenu Canning w Australii Zachodniej i zaliczono je do trzech zespołów. Stwierdzono ich użyteczność do wewnątrzbasenowej korealcji warstw darriwilianu (lanwirn). Sześć z dwunastu gatunków basenu Canning należącego do wschodniej Gondwany znanych jest także z Laurencji/Spitsbergenu (z wyłączeniem kosmopolitycznego gatunku B. micracantha), co potwierdza bliskie pokrewieństwa fauny chitinozoowej obu prakontynentów i wskazuje na możliwość zastosowania regionalnego podziału na biopoziomy z Laurencji również w odniesieniu do środkowego ordowiku Australii. Badania Chitinozoa z ordowiku Australii są wciąż nieliczne i ograniczone do basenów Canning i Georgina. Obok przedstawienia dokumentacji taksonomicznej odniesiono również obecne badania i nowoopisane zespoły do najobszerniejszego opracowania ordowickich Chitinozoa z basenu Canning z czterech wierceń obejmujących formacje Nambeet, Willara i Goldwyer (Combaz & Peniguel 1972). Opisane w niniejszej pracy zespoły można skorelować z tymi z poziomu 05 w basenie Canning (Combaz & Peninguel 1972). Największe podobieństwo wykazują opisane zespoły z górnej części formacji Goldwyer i formacji Nita do zespołów Chitinozoa z darriwilianu Kanady i mogą być korelowane z poziomem "niezdefiniowanym" bezpośrednio nadległym nad poziomem Cyathochitina jenkinsi w podziale stosowanym dla Laurencji, zaś w podziale przyjętym dla Gondwany, można je korelować z poziomem Laufeldochitina clavata lub Linochitina pissotensis. Spośród dwunastu gatunków opisanych z basenu Canning, dwa (Calpichitina windjana sp. n. =?Desmochijina complanata i Cyathochitina hunderumensis), a być może i trzeci (Belonechitina chydaea) znane są także z równowiekowych skał Baltiki i Avalonii, zaś jeden gatunek (Conochitina kryos) prawdopodobnie występuje również w Chinach. Nie stwierdzono wyraźnych powiązań z równowiekowymi zespołami północnej Gondwany. Wyniki paleobiogeograficznych badań autorów są zgodne z wynikami badań Achab et al. (1992) i wskazując, że zespoły środkowoordowickich Chitinozoa z Australii są najblizsze laurentyjskim, dobrze potwierdzają zależność rozmieszczenia gatunków Chitinozoa od szerokości geograficznej. Również związki pomiędzy równowiekowymi zespołami Baltiki, Avalonii i północnej Gondwany są zgodne z paleogeograficznymi rekonstrukcjami rozmieszczenia kontynentów w środkowym ordowiku (darriwilian), które umiejscawiają Laurencję i Australię w niskich szerokościach, Baltikę i Avalonię w średnich, a północną Gondwanę w pobliżu bieguna południowego. Opisano dwa nowe gatunki Calpichitina windjana i Belonechitina vibrissa.

We describe three Miocene species of Provanna from Japan, two new and one in open nomenclature, that represent the only known fossil examples from whale-falls and a considerable increase in the Miocene diversity of the genus. Provanna hirokoae sp. nov. comes from the latest Middle Miocene Kuroiwa seep site in central Honshu. The shells of this species are mostly recrystallized, but contain relict crossed lamellar microstructures. Provanna alexi sp. nov. is from the early Middle Miocene Shosanbetsu whale-fall site in northwestern Hokkaido, and has well preserved shells comprising an outer simple prismatic layer and an inner crossed lamellar layer. The two Provanna specimens from the Middle Miocene Rekifune whale-fall site, in eastern Hokkaido, are preserved as external moulds only, so are left in open nomenclature. Based on current knowledge, the presence of an outer prismatic layer and an underlying crossed lamellar layer seems to be a common feature in the shells of Provanna, as well as in other genera belonging to the family Provannidae and the superfamily Abyssochrysoidea. Although the oldest occurrence of Provanna was in the Late Cretaceous, the genus did not spread geographically and ecologically until the Miocene (with four, or possibly five species), a date concordant with some molecular estimates. However, this could be an artefact of the fossil record because the known pre-Miocene seep and whale-falls are more geographically restricted than those from the Miocene.

Hadrosaur dinosaurs (Ornithischia: Hadrosauridae) were abundant in Late Cretaceous terrestrial environments of North America and Asia. Their derived dental and postcranial specializations for herbivory have led to the suggestion that these dinosaurs were analogous to modern ungulates in lifestyle. Ungulates display a suite of morphological features that are correlated with diet, habitat preference, and sexual dimorphism. In this paper we examine several of these same features in hadrosaurs in order to determine whether they display similar patterns under multivariate analysis. Initial results confirm the resemblances between hadrosaurs and ungulates but suggest that missing data may considerably affect the outcomes of statistical analyses. Using the hadrosaur dataset as a template, we artificially degrade the (previously complete) ungulate datasets and perform the same analyses. Results are consistent with earlier results and provide an opportunity to assess the impact of missing data on the original multivariate structure. Our results support the hypothesis that hadrosaurs were similar to ungulates in patterns of ecomorphology.
Dinozaury kaczodziobe (Ornithischia: Hadrosauridae) były w późnej kredzie pospolite w Ameryce Północnej i Azji. Wyspecjalizowane przystosowania uzębienia i szkieletu pozaczaszkowego pozwoliły wysunąć przypuszczenie, że trybem życia przypominały dzisiejsze ssaki kopytne. Kopytne przejawiają zespół cech morfologicznych skorelowanych z rodzajem pokarmu, preferencjami siedliskowymi i dymorfizmem płciowym. W niniejszej pracy poddano analizie wieloczynnikowej odnośne cechy hadrozaurów, by sprawdzić, czy i u nich występują podobne prawidłowości. Wstępne wyniki potwierdziły podobieństwa między hadrozaurami a kopytnymi, ale wynik analizy statystycznej mógł zostać znacząco zniekształcony przez niekompletność danych dotyczących dinozaurów. Dlatego zestawy danych dotyczące ssaków kopytnych (pierwotnie kompletne) zostały sztucznie zubożone na wzór danych kopalnych i poddane powtórnej analizie. Uzyskane wyniki okazały się zbieżne z rezultatami wstępnymi i pozwoliły oszacować wpływ brakujących danych na pierwotną strukturę wieloczynnikową. Nasza analiza wspiera hipotezę, że hadrozaury były podobne pod względem ekomorfologicznym do ssaków kopytnych.

Non-mammalian cynodonts provide insights on several points about mammalian evolution, such as the postural change and locomotory advances within the group. Unfortunately, complete skeletons of Triassic cynodonts are rather uncommon and where more complete specimens are found they can offer a global vision on some traits not available from partial specimens. This is the case of the cynodont Trucidocynodon riograndensis, from the Triassic of Brazil, that has preserved its forelimbs providing some insights into locomotory properties. The movements between interclavicle and clavicle must have been limited, as such as those occurring between the latter and the scapulocoracoid although the long acromion process of this should have permitted a greater degree of freedom. Some of the more significant movements were those on the shoulder joint, in which the maximum adduction should have been ca. 35º relative to the parasagittal plane and the greater abduction ca. 55º. The maximum adduction occurred when the humerus was in the more retracted position during stride and the variation in the adduction/abduction should have been significant to the limb posture during its recovery stroke. The long olecranon and the distal overlapping between radius and ulna suggest the predominance of simple flexion/extension on the forearm without significant pronation/supination. The poorly preserved hand suggests that Trucidocynodon could have evolved a slight semidigitigrad condition in its forelimbs. All these features give to this cynodont an important role in the evolution of the mammalian locomotory properties indicating that some features, such as the possibility of greater humeral adduction, evolved early in cynodont lineage.

Achelatan lobsters, also known as spiny and slipper lobsters, develop via a highly specialised larval form. This special larva, phyllosoma, is flat, translucent, possesses elongate legs and can grow to enormous sizes. Although these larvae may appear very fragile, they are well-known as fossils. Thousands of specimens have been found in the lithographic limestone of Southern Germany (Tithonian, Upper Jurassic, about 150 mya). At least three types of fossil, but modern-appearing phyllosoma larvae are known. Additionally, fossil larvae that possess only some of the characters of modern-day phyllosoma larvae are known from the same Lagerstätte, but also from the younger limestone beds of Lebanon. Here we report a new achelatan fossil from the older Posidonia Shale (Toarcian, Lower Jurassic, 175–183 mya). The specimen shows certain characters of a phyllosoma larva, but other characters appear like those of post-phyllosoma stages of achelatan lobsters. This specimen is therefore the oldest occurrence of an achelatan lobster larva. We compare the new specimen with other fossil larvae with such mixed or “intermetamorphic” morphologies.

An isolated exopod in uncompressed three−dimensional “Orsten”−type preservation from the Cambrian of Australia represents a new species of Marrellomorpha, Austromarrella klausmuelleri gen. et sp. nov. The exopod is composed of at least 17 annuli. Each of the proximal annuli carries a pair of lamellae: one lamella on the lateral side and one on the median side. The distal annuli bear stout spines in the corresponding position instead of lamellae, most likely representing early ontogenetic equivalents of the lamellae. The new find extends the geographical range of the taxon Marrellomorpha. Additionally, it offers a partial view into marrellomorph ontogeny. The occurrence of a marrellomorph fragment in “Orsten”−type preservation provides new palaeo−ecological insights into the possible connections between the “Orsten” biotas and other fossil Lagerstätten. Finding such connections is necessary for understanding the complex ecosystems of early Palaeozoic times.

We erect a new genus, Elongatolucina, for distinctive large, elongate lucinid bivalve specimens from Miocene sediments from Venezuela. We interpret Elongatolucina to have had a chemosymbiotic mode of life and it may have been seep−restricted. Cryptolucina elassodyseides from Eocene hydrocarbon seep sites in Washington State, USA is incorporated in Elongatolucina.

The hypothesis that belemnitid rostra are formed by primary biogenic low−Mg calcite is widespread. However, the coexistence in the same rostrum of both aragonitic and calcitic components has been reported in true belemnites (Goniocamax, Turonian). A combined microstructural and chemical composition study of the comparison of shells with undisputed mineralogy from the same site as the Turonian Goniocamax, shows that these aragonitic shells display the effects of diagenetic alteration. These observations favour the hypothesis that belemnite rostra are composed of primary aragonite, rather than low−Mg calcite, and are consistent with all other cephalopod shells. Calcitic and aragonitic rostra are also known in other Dibranchiata such as Triassic Aulacocerida and Eocene Belopterina. Diagenetic changes such as shown here may clearly affect palaeo−environmental interpretations based on carbonate shells.

Larvae of lacewings (Neuroptera) are known to be fierce predators. According to the morphology of fossil forms this seems to have been the case already in the Early Cretaceous. While being predators, lacewing larvae are also food items for other organisms. Here we report two pieces of amber from Myanmar providing instances of such cases. In one amber piece several isolated stylets of lacewing larvae are preserved closely associated together. The most likely interpretation is that a predator preying on lacewing larvae has regurgitated or defecated these non-digestible pieces, yet the identity of the predator remains unclear. The other amber piece preserves a larva resembling modern day larvae of split-footed lacewings (Nymphidae). The larva has projections on its trunk, allowing it to wear a camouflaging cloak. In the head region, a mite (Acari) is attached to the larva; more precisely, the entire anterior body region of the mite is apparently inserted into the lacewing larva. The mite is smaller than the larva. It is known from the modern fauna that stage 1 larvae of Ascalaphidae can be attacked also by rather small predators, such as ants. The mite can therefore well be interpreted as a true predator instead of a parasite, especially considering the unusual mode of attachment. We briefly review interactions of lacewing larvae with other organisms represented in amber from Myanmar and add two new pieces to the puzzle of reconstructing the trophic interactions in the 100-million-year old amber forest.

Three new fossil species of lucinids, Meganodontia haunuiensis, Elliptiolucina neozelandica, and Lucinoma saetheri, are described from lower to middle Miocene hydrocarbon seep carbonates from north and south of Hawke Bay, eastern North Island, New Zealand. Of these taxa Meganodontia haunuiensis is confined to seep sites south of Hawke Bay, while Elliptiolucina neozelandica comes only from the seep sites north of Hawke Bay. Using ecological information from modern bivalve species, we suggest the southern area seep sites formed in shallower waters than the northern sites. Among the lucinids, Meganodontia haunuiensis is one of the oldest records of the genus, and its distribution has shrunk from worldwide in the Miocene times to only around Taiwan today. Elliptiolucina neozelandica is the second oldest species in the genus. Since the Miocene the distribution of Elliptiolucina has narrowed but its habitat range has increased to both seeps and sandy environments, mainly around the Philippines.

A new psittacosaurid is based on a nearly complete articulated skeleton from northeastern China that differs principally in skull size as compared to the most common and widespread species, Psittacosaurus mongoliensis. The skull of Psittacosaurus majorsp. nov., is 25% larger despite very similar postcranial skeletal dimensions. Such selective skull enlargement is very unusual. Skull size in ceratopsians, in general, scales with positive allometry relative to body mass: species of greater mass have proportionately larger skulls. This pattern stands in marked contrast to that for other vertebrate herbivores, in which larger−bodied species either have proportionately similar or smaller skulls relative to body mass. Larger−bodied ceratopsians evolved skulls that are 50% or more of trunk length—as measured without their expansive cranial frill. Although contemporaneous duck−billed dinosaurs also exhibit some positive allometry in the skull, skull length remains approximately 35% of trunk length. The evolution of extraordinary absolute and relative skull size among ceratopsians appears to have been driven by sexual selection and involved the tandem evolution of reduced head mobility and an obligate quadrupedal posture.

Opis:
We review an ungulate mammalian fauna of the Eocene Pondaung Formation, central Myanmar, and herein describe new dental specimens. The taxa newly recognized in the Pondaung Formation are two indeterminate bunodont artiodactyls, two small “eomoropid” perissodactyls (Eomoropussp. cf. E. minimus and an indeterminate “eomoropid”), and a new deperetellid perissodactyl genus, Bahinolophus, which is established for Deperetella birmanica from the Pondaung Formation. The Pondaung ungulate fauna consists of 29 species (14 families and 18 genera): one species of an indeterminate small ungulate, 12 species (six genera in six families) of artiodactyls, and 16 species (11 genera in seven families) of perissodactyls. Although both Pondaung artiodactyls and perissodactyls are abundant and taxonomically diverse, the former are less diversified in generic numbers than the latter, but are nearly equal to the latter in abundance. Anthracotheriid artiodactyls and brontotheriid and amynodontid perissodactyls are the most abundant elements in the fauna. The estimated paleoecologies of the included taxa, the geologic and geographic evidence, and cenogram analysis suggest that the paleoenvironment of the Pondaung fauna was forested/woodland vegetation with humid/subhumid moisture and large rivers, which were located not far from the eastern Tethyan Sea. The age of the Pondaung fauna is independently correlated with the latest middle Eocene only on the basis of the stratigraphic, microfossil, and radiometric evidence, yielding a result consistent with mammalian faunal correlations. On the other hand, the Pondaung fauna includes many artiodactyl taxa compared to other middle Eocene faunas of East Asia and shows relatively high endemism at the generic level, implying that the Pondaung fauna is not formally included in the Eocene Asian Land Mammal “Ages” system.
