Opis:
Ostracods from the Arche quarry at Frasnes are analysed. Twenty−seven species are recognised in the Chalon Member and in the very base of the Arche Member of the Moulin Liénaux Formation. Three new species: Scrobicula gracilis, Microcheilinella archensis, and Bairdia (Rectobairdia) chalonensis, and one subspecies Plagionephrodes laqueus praelaqueus, are proposed. The fauna is in the Favulella lecomptei Zone based on metacopid ostracods and belongs to the Eifelian Mega−Assemblage. Ostracods are indicative of a regressive trend from a moderately deep poorly oxygenated marine environment below fair weather wave base to very shallow well oxygenated and agitated environments. Comparison of the ostracod fauna present in the Arche quarry with faunas described from the Frasnes railway section and from the Lion quarry shows that ostracods did not suffer a crisis during the Palmatolepis punctata Conodont Zone and close to the Early–Middle Frasnian boundary.

Opis:
Herein we describe the oldest well-sampled multituberculate assemblage from the Cretaceous of North America. The fauna is dated at 98.37 Ma and thus approximates the Albian-Cenomanian (Early-Late Cretaceous) boundary. The multituberculate fauna is diverse. Two of the multituberculates (Janumys erebos gen. et sp. n. and an unidentified taxon) are provisionally placed among 'Plagiaulacida'. Another taxon, Ameribaatar zofiae gen. et sp. n., is of uncertain subordinal affinities. The remaining multituberculates appear to represent the advanced suborder Cimolodonta and fall within the 'Paracimexomys group'. We rediagnose Paracimexomys on the basis of the type species, P. priscus, and refer to other species as cf. Paracimexomys (including cf. P. perplexus sp. n.). A revised diagnosis is also provided for Cenomanian Dakotamys. A previously-described species from the Cedar Mountain Formation is placed in Cedaromys gen. n. as C. bestia, together with C. pawus sp. n. Bryceomys is represented in the fauna by B. intermedius sp. n. Relationships of Paracimexomys-group to later taxa remain obscure. However, Bryceomys and Cedaromys share a number of features with Cimolodontidae. Given these resemblances, together with the fact that Cimolodontidae retain certain plesiomorphies (stout lower incisor, gigantoprismatic enamel) with respect to Ptilodontoidea (to which they are commonly referred), we suggest that Cimolodontidae may have arisen from a clade within the 'Paracimexomys group', independent of ptilodontoids.

We report a new Miocene sirenian from District Kutch, State of Gujarat, India: Domingia sodhae gen. et sp. nov. The new species is a dugongine dugongid with flattened tusk−like upper incisors. Like some other Miocene dugongids, Domningia is large and has complex, bilophodont molars and three−rooted premolars, which are strongly worn. The rostrum is downturned significantly, similar to modern dugongs, and indicative of a specialized feeding mode. Phylogenetically, it is closely related to Dioplotherium, Rytiodus, Corystosiren, and Bharatisiren. Among these, Domningia is most similar to Bharatisiren indica and Dioplotherium manigaulti, in that all three taxa retain multi−rooted premolars. Similar to Bharatisiren, the nasal process of the premaxilla is long. Bharatisiren and Domningia are part of a late Oligocene and early Miocene radiation of dugongines in South Asia.

Opis:
Early–Middle Frasnian ostracods and crinoids from Wietrznia in the Northern Kielce subregion of the Holy Cross area were analyzed. Twenty three ostracod species assigned to thirteen named genera, as well as eighteen crinoid species including the representatives of fifteen stem−based taxa were distinguished. For most of the species open nomenclature is applied. The composition of ostracod assemblage changes from moderately diverse in the lower part of the Palmatolepis transitans Zone to poorly diverse in its higher part. Lack of ostracods in the uppermost part of the Pa. transitans Zone and in the Palmatolepis punctata Zone is noted. The crinoid distribution pattern comprises the interval of relatively high diversity, interrupted in the uppermost part of the Pa. transitans Zone, and the interval of temporary recovery in the lower Pa. punctata Zone. Such distribution patterns point to deterioration of environmental conditions across the Early–Middle Frasnian transition, coinciding with a large−scale C−isotopic perturbation superimposed on intermittent, two−step eustatic sea level rise. On the other hand, impoverished, surviving crinoid faunas and absence of ostracods in the Pa. punctata Zone indicate the overall long−term deterioration of life conditions through the major C−isotope anomaly time span. However, this may also result from synsedimentary tectonic pulses, causing block movements and large−scale resedimentation phenomena on the northern slope of the Dyminy Reef during the basal Middle Frasnian sea level rise.

The palynological content from the Cerro La Chilca and Quebrada Ancha sections of the Wenlock? to Přídolí Los Espejos Formation, in the Argentinean Precordillera is studied. The marine palynomorphs exhibit higher relative abundance and diversity in almost all the productive samples, except for the uppermost ones from both sections, in coincidence with the shift towards more proximal facies in this part. The Los Espejos Formation yielded a total of 114 species of marine organic walled-phytoplankton, 52 species of miospores and two non-marine phytoplankton species. The lower part of the Los Espejos Formation, dated as Ludfordian, displays the highest phytoplankton diversity and the better-preserved palynomorphs of the studied samples in both sections. Diversity tends to diminish towards the upper part of the Los Espejos Formation, dated as late Ludfordian–Přídolí, in coincidence with the transition to storm-dominated shelf and shoreface environments and subaerial exposures that probably hinder the preservation of palynomorphs. Comparisons with coeval phytoplankton assemblages from Gondwana and other palaeoplates such as Laurentia, Baltica, and Avalonia result in strong similarities, which suggest a cosmopolitan distribution pattern during the Ludlow and the Přídolí. Conversely, the trilete spores display more similarities with those from Gondwana and thus suggest a lesser dispersive potential in comparison to phytoplankton. A new trilete spore species Emphanisporites? tenuis is described.

Four major microfacies have been recognized in the Psie Górki section and the bioclastic content indicates an open marine environment in the photic zone close to an algal shole. Sedimentological studies point to a regressive episode starting close to the Frasnian–Famennian boundary. The regressive microfacies pattern is revealed by the presence of semirestricted algal microbreccias that compose all of the lower part of the Famennian. The regression was accompanied by meteoric water invasion as the sea level fell. Seventy−six ostracod species are recorded. The ostracod assemblage, dominated by podocopids, belongs to the Eifelian ecotype and is indicative of a well−oxygenated marine environment below fair−weather wave base in the Frasnian part of the section, and of shallower environments in the base of the Famennian. No ostracod assemblage characteristic of hypoxic or semi−restricted water conditions has been recorded. The rate of extinction of ostracod species (>70%) close to the Frasnian–Famennian boundary is comparable with that known on the same level in several other sections investigated in the world. Five new ostracod species are proposed by J.−G. Casier and F. Lethiers: Selebratina vellicata, Samarella? minuta, Bairdiocypris ventrorecta, Acratia pentagona, and “Bairdia” psiegorkiensis.

In order to document the Alamo Event and to investigate its influence on shallow−marine environments, we undertook a study of ostracods, conodonts, and analysis of the sedimentology of the lower member of the type Devils Gate Limestone. Six major carbonate microfacies (MF1–MF6) ranging from open−marine environments below storm wave base to pre−evaporitic supratidal lagoons were recognized. The sedimentological study detected no important sedimentological changes during the Alamo Event; only an influx of detrital material and lithoclasts indicate that an unusual event had occurred. Ostracods are generally rare or absent in the lower member of the Devils Gate Limestone, and only 2,000 carapaces, valves and fragments were extracted; from these some 26 taxa were identified. Two new species, Voronina? eureka and Serenida dorsoplicata are proposed. The ostracods belong to the Eifelian Mega−Assemblage and their distribution was influenced by strong salinity variations. Because of the rarity and low diversity of ostracods and conodonts in samples collected from the lower part of the lower member of the Devils Gate Limestone it is not adequate to demonstrate conclusively an extinction event close to the Alamo Event Bed. Nevertheless the greater abundance and diversity of ostracods above this bed seems to indicate that the Alamo Event did not result in significant extinction of ostracod taxa in this shallow water setting. The ostracod fauna present in the lower member of the Devils Gate Limestone suggests faunal exchanges between Nevada and the Russian Platform via the Western Canadian platform.

Pates et al. (2017) and Pates and Daley (2017) reinterpreted a number of presumable xenusians (lobopodians) and described some new fossils from various Cambrian Lagerstätten as radiodontan (anomalocaridid) frontal appendages. The authors suggested that some features including overall length of a specimen, a number of tentative podomeres, a number of ventral blades (spines) and dorsal spines, their morphology, and an angle between the dorsal and ventral surfaces (θ) of a specimen provide enough information for a fairly good morphological description and a relevant systematic interpretation of stem group ecdysozoans. The case of xenusian Mureropodia apae from the lower Cambrian Valdemiedes Formation of Murero, northeastern Spain (Gámez Vintaned et al. 2011), which Pates and Daley (2017) identified as radiodontan Caryosyntrips cf. camurus, does not verify a plausibility of such a reductive approach.

Opis:
The lacustrine oil shales of the Coal Creek Member of the Kishenehn Formation in northwestern Montana comprise a relatively unstudied middle Eocene fossil insect locality. Herein, we detail the stratigraphic position of the fossiliferous unit, describe the insect fauna of the Coal Creek locality and document its bias towards very small but remarkably preserved insects. In addition, the depositional environment is examined and the mineral constituents of the laminations that comprise the varves of the Kishenehn oil shale are defined. Fifteen orders of insects have been recorded with the majority of all insects identified as aquatic with the families Chironomidae (Diptera) and Corixidae (Hemiptera) dominant. The presence of small aquatic insects, many of which are immature, the intact nature of >90% of the fossil insects and the presence of Daphnia ephippia, all indicate that the depositional environment was the shallow margin of a large freshwater lake. The fossil insects occur within fossilized microbial mat layers that comprise the bedding planes of the oil shale. Unlike the fossiliferous shales of the Florissant and Okanagan Highlands, the mats are not a product of diatomaceous algae nor are diatom frustules a component of the sediments or the varve structure. Instead, the varves are composed of very fine eolian siliciclastic silt grains overlaid with non-diatomaceous, possibly cyanobacteria-derived microbial mats which contain distinct traces of polyaromatic hydrocarbons. A distinct third layer composed of essentially pure calcite is present in the shale of some exposures and is presumably derived from the seasonal warming-induced precipitation of carbonate from the lake's waters. The Coal Creek locality presents a unique opportunity to study both very small middle Eocene insects not often preserved as compression fossils in most Konservat-Lagerstätte and the processes that led to their preservation.

The Chañares Formation exhibits one of the most important archosauriform records of early Carnian ecosystems. Here we present new data on the palaeohistology of Chañares archosauriforms and provide new insights into their paleobiology, as well as possible phylogenetically informative traits. Bone microstructure of Lagerpeton chanarensis and Tropidosuchus romeri is dominated by fibro-lamellar tissue and dense vascularization. On the other hand, Chanaresuchus bonapartei is more densely vascularized, but with cyclical growth characterized by alternate fibro-lamellar, parallel-fibered and lamellar-zonal tissues. Dense vascularization and fibro-lamellar tissue imply fast growth and high metabolic rates for all these taxa. These histological traits may be tentatively interpreted as a possible adaptative advantage in front of Chañares Formation environmental conditions.

The Chinchilla Sand is a formally defined stratigraphic sequence of Pliocene fluviatile deposits that comprise interbed-ded clay, sand, and conglomerate located in the western Darling Downs, south-east Queensland, Australia. Vertebrate fossils from the deposits are referred to as the Chinchilla Local Fauna. Despite over a century and a half of collection and study, uncertainties concerning the taxa in the Chinchilla Local Fauna continue, largely from the absence of stratigraph-ically controlled excavations, lost or destroyed specimens, and poorly documented provenance data. Here we present a detailed and updated study of the vertebrate fauna from this site. The Pliocene vertebrate assemblage is represented by at least 63 taxa in 31 families. The Chinchilla Local Fauna is Australia's largest, richest and best preserved Pliocene vertebrate locality, and is eminently suited for palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental investigations of the late Pliocene.

Although the fossil bird Lithornis has been known for more than a century, only in the 1980s were its affinities within the palaeognathous birds (Aves, Palaeognathae) realized and demonstrated by use of osteological characters. Other lines of evidence could, however, be used to test hypotheses of its affinities. To add data to this ongoing investigation, we present the first detailed description of the microscopic morphology of the eggshell of this fossil bird. Our description of eggshells of two species of Lithornis is consistent with the placement of this fossil bird within Palaeognathae. Characters that corroborate this position include the presence of three aprismatic structural layers visible by use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the eggshell microstructure. The placement of Lithornis phylogenetically close to the extant flighted South American group Tinamidae is supported on the basis of characters present in the structural composition of the eggshell layers of both these taxa.
