Opis:
Disarticulated crinoid columnals and pluricolumnals from the Famennian of the Holy Cross area were analysed. Sixteen crinoid taxa were distinguished, only one of which is based on stems attributed to a calyx−based genus, and the others are classified within artificial supraspecific units. Two of these are new: Schyschcatocrinus levis sp. nov. and Cosmocrinus polonicussp. nov. The described crinoid fauna shows distinct extinction−recovery temporal pattern: the Frasnian–Famennian crisis affected 50% of stem−based families and 70% of late Frasnian stem−based genera. The succession of crinoid faunas represented by three faunal intervals has been identified and correlated to standard conodont zones: FIa, Palmatolepis triangularis Zone (relic “Frasnian” crinoid assemblage Schyschcatocrinus delicatus–Calleocrinus kielcensis), FIb, Pa. crepida to Pa. marginifera zones (crinoid assemblage Calleocrinus kielcensis–Schyschcatocrinus levis) and FIc, Pa. trachytera to S. praesulcata zones (crinoid assemblage Cosmocrinus polonicus–Acbastaucrinus affectatus). The succession was controlled mostly by eustatic factors.

This paper describes the vertebrate ichnofauna from the Tumlin Sandstone (Buntsandstein) of the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland. The footprint assemblage has previously been regarded as Early Triassic in age; however, ichnogenera characteristic of the Late Permian are now recognized. Lack of representatives of the ichnofamily Chirotheriidae, characteristic of continental Triassic sediments worldwide, also indicates a Permian rather than a Triassic age for the studied assemblage. Three ichnogenera (Batrachichnus, Limnopus, and Amphisauropus) produced by amphibians are recognized, the remainder (Varanopus, Chelichnus, Dimetropus, Rhynchosauroides, Palmichnus, Paradoxichnium, and Phalangichnus) being of reptilian origin. Batrachichnus cf. salamandroides (Geinitz, 1861), Limnopus cf. zeilleri (Delage, 1912), Amphisauropus cf. latus Haubold, 1970, Varanopus aff. microdactylus (Pabst, 1896), Chelichnus cf. duncani (Owen, 1842), and Dimetropussp. are recorded in the Lower Buntsandstein for the first time. The following new ichnospecies are erected: Rhynchosauroides kuletae ichnosp. nov., Palmichnus lacertoides ichnosp. nov., Paradoxichnium tumlinense ichnosp. nov., Phalangichnus gradzinskii ichnosp. nov., and Phalangichnus gagoli ichnosp. nov.

Lingulate brachiopods from chalcedonites of Tremadoc age are redescribed based on new material from the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland. The fauna includes 18 species, of which Elliptoglossa polonica and Siphonotretella popovi are new. The enigmatic Orbiculoidea? subovalis Biernat is redescribed as a species of the recently erected aberrant paterulids Diencobolus Holmer, Popov, Koneva, and Bassett. The fauna includes also Acrotreta dissimilis (Biernat), ?Ditreta dividua Biernat, Semitreta maior Biernat, Eurytreta minor Biernat, Mamatia retracta (Popov), Orbithele ceratopygarum (Brøgger), Siphonobolus uralensis (Lermontova), Alichovia analogica Biernat, Pomeraniotreta sp., Akmolina sp., Rowellella sp., Acanthambonia sp. A, Acanthambonia? sp. B, Leptembolon cf. lingulaeformis (Mickwitz), and the earliest known species of Eoconulus. Most of the recorded lingulate species are endemic, but a significant number are now known also from eastern Kazakhstan and the South Urals, as well as from the Tremadoc of Sweden and Norway.

Opis:
Most of 378 upper Eifelian crinoid columnals collected from the lower part of Skały Beds in the Holy Cross Mountains display traces of borings produced by endobionts, but only approximately 20% of them show traces of epibionts. These infested crinoids are represented by 5 stem−based species: Tantalocrinus scutellus, Schyschcatocrinus creber, Gilbertsocrinus vetulus, Pentagonostipes petaloides, and Cycloocetocrinussp. They were fouled by 19 species of suspension−feeding epibionts, including saccamminid foraminiferans, rugose and tabulate corals, cyrtinitid and productid brachiopods, “ctenostome bryozoans”, “cyclostome bryozoans”, cystoporate bryozoans, and rhabdomesid? bryozoans, crinoids, and organisms of uncertain affinities. The majority of these epibionts were opportunistic commensals colonizing living crinoids, and only some utilized dead crinoids as hard substrate for attachment. At least some of these epibionts seem to have settled selectively on particular crinoid host species.

Opis:
The siliciclastic sequence of the Lower Devonian of the southern part of the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland is renown for abundant vertebrate fossils, including ostracoderm, sarcopterygian, acanthodian, chondrichthyan, and placoderm remains. Study of the vertebrate assemblage from the “placoderm sandstone” from Podłazie Hill in the Holy Cross Mountains reveals that the remains belong to Kujdanowiaspis sp. among other unspecified actinolepids and brachythoracids. The Polish actinolepid material is characterised by sizes bigger than those of the Podolian specimens; this may be related to geographic variation. Owing to the proximity between Podolia and Holy Cross Mountains we suggest that Kujdanowiaspis sp. from the Holy Cross Mountains may be a refugee of some species of Kujdanowiaspis from the Lochkovian–Pragian of Podolia and/or from Spain. Some anterolateral plates provisionally assigned to Arthrodira indet. probably represent a new genus due to the high overlapping surface for median dorsal and anteroventrolateral plates.

Opis:
Late Frasnian–Early Famennian entomozoacean ostracod assemblages from the Płucki section in the Holy Cross Mountains were studied to establish the effect of the “Kellwasser bio−event” on the planktonic biodiversity and faunal content. The composition of ostracod assemblages changes from a moderately diverse (10 species) Entomoprimitia–Richterina– Nehdentomis–Nandania dominated “background” assemblage characterising a pre−event interval, to an Entomoprimitia−assemblage during the event interval, and finally to a Franklinella−dominated post−event assemblage in the Middle Palmatolepis triangularis conodont Zone. The Frasnian–Famennian extinction caused substantial losses among entomozoacean lineages. In the Płucki section it occurred in two closely spaced steps within the Palmatolepis linguiformis conodont Zone. The first step, at the base of the dark cephalopod limestone (Upper Kellwasser Horizon), reduced the abundance and the species diversity of entomozoaceans to only two Entomoprimitia species. The vacant niche was then filled by the new, immigrant species Entomoprimitia (Entomoprimitia) kayseri which is dominant in the Upper Kellwasser interval. All these species were lost at the second step within the Upper Kellwasser Horizon. The entomozoaceans remained virtually absent during a long time interval between the end−Frasnian crisis and the Middle Pa. triangularis Zone. They reappear as new species from refugia lineages (Franklinella, Nehdentomis) and became widespread, indicating favourable ecological conditions. Some 13 species have been identified and assigned to seven genera. Rabienella? lagowiensis sp. nov. is proposed.

Silurian land plants from the Holy Cross Mts. are described for the first time. The fossil assemblage occurs in a nearshore, marine, terrigenous deposit of Ludlowian/Pridolian age. It contains Cooksonia sp., Cooksonia−related species, and some problematical forms. The flora, which needs further study, is of importance to our understanding of early vascular plants and Late Silurian palaeogeography.

Opis:
The dominant factor in faunal succession of conodonts in the Frasnian of Poland is the apparent immigration of species originating allopatrically in other regions. Each immigration event usually changes the population variability of a local species (character displacement). Only a few lineages show their phyletic evolution within the studied area. Attempts to distinguish conodont species on the basis of platform element shape failed in some of the latest Frasnian palmatolepidids. Even at the apparatus−based generic level, certain ramiform elements of the apparatus appear much more diagnostic than the platforms. Correlative value of the late Frasnian palmatolepidids of unknown apparatus structure is thus questionable. The evolution of platform elements in Ancyrodella offers a more solid basis for age determination although their great population variability makes resolution rather low and requires the population approach. The panderodontids Belodella(?) tenuiserrata sp., B. minutidentata sp. nov., B. robustidentata sp. nov., prioniodontid Icriodus kielcensis sp. nov., enigmatic monospecific Playfordiidae fam. nov., prioniodinids Dyminodina planidentata gen. et sp. nov., D. anterodenticulata sp. nov., D. kovalensis sp. nov., Pluckidina kielcensis gen. et sp. nov., P. slupiensis sp. nov., P. robustipegmata sp. nov., and P. lagoviensis sp. nov., derived polygnathid Avignathus bifurcatus sp. nov., probably secondarily simplified polygnathid Nicollidina gen. nov., and palmatolepidids Kielcelepis gen. nov., Lagovilepis gen. nov. and Klapperilepis gen. nov. are proposed.

Opis:
Latest Famennian (UD−VI, “Strunian”) brachiopod fauna from Kowala (Kielce Region, Holy Cross Mountains, Poland) consists of eighteen species within 6 orders, eleven of them reported in open nomenclature. Characteristic taxa include: Schellwienella pauli, Aulacella interlineata, Sphenospira julii, Novaplatirostrum sauerlandense, Hadyrhyncha sp., Cleiothyridina struniensis. New morphological details of Schellwienella pauli, Sphenospira julii, and Aulacella interlineata are provided. The described latest Famennian brachiopod fauna is distinctly richer than that from underlying upper Famennian deposits (11 species within 4 orders). Majority of species from Kowala seem to have been adapted to deep water settings and/or poor nutrient availability. The stratigraphic separation between Planovatirostrum in the UD−III to UD−V and Novaplatirostrum in the UD−VI observed in Sauerland and in Thuringia is valid also in the Holy Cross Mountains. This is the first comprehensive report of a relatively diversified latest Famennian brachiopod fauna from surface outcrops of Poland.

Opis:
Gastropod response to a marked carbon isotopic geochemical anomaly across the Early–Middle Frasnian transition (Palmatolepis transitans–Palmatolepis punctata conodont zones) has been analysed along the southern Laurussian shelf, mainly within the Dyminy Reef in the Holy Cross Mountains. Gastropods are represented by three reefal associations (Kowalatrochus sanctacrucensis, Euryzone kielcensis, and Grabinopsis guerichi associations), and an impoverished open−shelf Straparollus laevis assemblage. The most severe diversity crisis is connected to the disappearance of local low−energy muddy habitats, as a result of a transgressive pulse (Middlesex Event) and benthic habitat changes tied to strongly fluctuating carbon cycling; this has been observed at the highly diverse Kadzielnia−type assemblage. Fifteen taxa have been recognised in this distinctive Early Frasnian mud−mound association, including six (probably endemics), which are unknown from the Middle Frasnian. The disappearance of three relict Givetian species (Euryzone delphinuloides, Straparollus laevis, and Goniasma? zarecznyi) is also recorded. Other species probably migrated into the shallower water part of Dyminy Reef and persisted in the Middle and Late Frasnian. The Middlesex Event and the earlier major biogeochemical perturbation seem to have less serious effects for evolution of gastropods in the Polish−Moravian part of the Laurussia shelf than the catastrophic Frasnian–Famennian extinction. Two new taxa are described: Frydiella kaimi gen. et sp. nov. (Eotomariidae) and Heidelbergeria czarnieckii gen. et sp. nov. (Elasmonematidae).
