Opis:
Empathy and resilience have an indirect effect on raising the level of the quality of care, as empathy is the basis for good interactions between medical workers and patients, and resilience, as a dynamic process, helps caregivers adapt well to difficult working conditions, risks or traumas experienced. The development of empathy and resilience of these medical workers is possible by a training method already employed among medical students in order to both improve the quality of care, but also to more effectively prevent professional burnout. The purpose of the study was to determine the level of empathy and the level of resilience, their possible correlations with each other, as well as the relationship of these variables with socio-demographic variables. The study was carried out in 2021 among 31 doctors and 45 nurses using two main tools - the Emotional-Cognitive Empathy Questionnaire (EEP) by Ewa Wilczek-Rużyczka and the Resilience Measurement Scale(SPP-25) by Nina Oginska-Bulik and Zygfryd Juczynski, as well as a socio-demographic questionnaire. The most valuable results of the study turned out to be the demonstration of statistically significant concordant associations of empathy level with resilience level both in general, and their individual factors as statistically significant intercorrelations. In addition, statistically significant differences were shown in the case of cognitive empathy - higher levels of empathy were found among people with longer work experience and women when compared to men. In the case of the level of other components of empathy, as well as resilience, differences so as to be statistically significant could not be confirmed. It is recommended that empathy and resilience training sessions be implemented for health care workers, and that the study be continued with larger research groups, with additional control groups, to refine the programs of these training sessions.

Opis:
Working as a doctor, nurse, and midwife is associated with great responsibility for the health and life of patients. It is a source of many burdens, which result in marked, chronic stress leading to professional burnout and related consequences affecting all spheres of life. The research aimed to analyze healthcare workers’ preferred stress-coping strategies. The study encompassed 134 healthcare workers practicing the profession of doctor, nurse, and midwife, working in the cities of Lublin in the period from May 2022 to February 2023. We employed a self-made questionnaire and the Stress Coping Inventory (Mini-COPE). The PS IMAGO 9.0 program was used for the calculations and analysis of the results. The strategies of coping with stress most often used by doctors, nurses, and midwives were based on active coping and planning. The three surveyed groups of healthcare workers differ statistically significantly in using the denial strategy. Nurses are more likely than physicians to use denial as a coping strategy. There were no statistically significant differences in the remaining strategies of coping with stress. Healthcare workers in stressful situations often choose active ways of dealing with them, especially active coping and planning. An important factor that strengthens the choice of active strategies for coping with stress seems to be training aimed at improving the professional qualifications of healthcare workers.

Previous research has established that photos of great apes, including humans, show a left cheek bias. As this bias is absent in images of lower primates and other animals, phylo-genetic proximity appears to influence humans’ depictions of nonhuman species. However Thomas et al.’s (2006) finding of a left cheek bias for dogs challenges this argument. As their analyses were underpowered, the present study sought to replicate Thomas et al.’s study with a larger sample to help determine whether human depictions of non-human animals vary as a function of their evolutionary relatedness. Photographs (N=2883) were sourced from Instagram’s ‘Most Recent’ feed using hashtags that matched Thomas et al.’s Google Image search terms: #dog, #cat, #fish, #lizard, #cute- baby, #cryingbaby. The first 401 lateral images for each hashtag were coded for pose orientation (left, right). Replicating Thomas et al., results confirmed a left cheek bias for mammals but not nonmammals. The left cheek bias was driven by images of human infants; there were no cheek biases for images of nonhuman animals (dogs, cats, lizards, fish). As a left cheek bias was evident in photos of primates (#cutebaby, #cryingbaby), but absent for other mammals (#dog, #cat) and nonmammals (#lizard, #fish), the data support the argument that phylogenetic proximity influences posing biases.

Mobbing behaviours at workplaces and occupational burnout have negative impacts on the working and private lives. Mobbing, irrespective of its intensity, represents one of the most significant stressors and often leads to an irreversible psycho-deterioration of an individual. Overcoming a stressful situation at work requires specifying the methods for coping with stress resulting in job burnout. Job burnout is a complex syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. The aim of these study was to analyze interrelationships between mobbing, coping with stress and job burnout among nurses. The study included 86 nurses of various specialties, who gave their consent to participate in the project, were examined. The average age of the nurses was 37.7 years, and the average job seniority was 12.6 years. The study were conducted in 2019-2020 in hospitals of Southern Poland. and was based on the following instruments: Sociodemographic survey, The Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ), COPE Inventory and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The presented studies showed a statistically significant and consistent relationship between the intensity of perceived mobbing in nurses and the results obtained on the scale of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. A relationship was found between the preference for some specific stress management strategies and job burnout level, also after adjustment for the mobbing intensity, age and seniority of the respondents, thus empirically confirming a multifaceted nature of the unfavorable phenomena related to the work of a nurse. It was found that there is interrelationships between mobbing, coping with stress and job burnout among nurses.

Individuals with particular qualities or characteristics are predisposed to develop cognitive impairment non dementia. The main aim to study socio-demographic factors and personality traits, that contribute to the development of depressive disorders in elderly patients with cognitive deficits. The purpose of the article was to show that it is important to investigate the socio-psychological factors that can worsen the course of cognitive impairment, which already comes with age. During the research an observational study involving 111 patients from Kazakhstan with cognitive deficits was conducted: 59 patients, whose depressive disorders had been identified by clinical and psychopathological research using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HRSD) and 52 patients for whom psychogenic depressive disorders had not been defined. The recruitment of the study participants was carried out in the state nursing home for the elderly and disabled. The study included male and female individuals aged 60-74 years with different national and ethnic backgrounds, with mild to moderate cognitive impairment, who wished to participate in the study and signed an informed consent to participate in the study. This study uncovered the primary factors that increase the chances of individuals with cognitive impairments developing a depressive disorder. These factors include personal attributes of the patients, such as their sex, whether they are married or not, and the quality of their relationship with their family members. In addition, personality traits from before their cognitive decline, such as a tendency for isolation, insecurity, and passivity, were also significant. This study could have an exceptional value for medicine and psychological workers on the whole and in Republic of Kazakhstan in particular to prevent depressive diseases were mentioned.

The relevance of the investigated problem lies in the need to provide primary psychological assistance to military personnel and other victims of the Russo-Ukrainian war at its current stage, because psychological problems are occurring in an increasing number of people, in particular in the territory of Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia. The purpose of the article is to determine the specifics and stages of providing psychological assistance, as well as consultations to victims of the war, primarily to the populations of Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, which are located within the war zone. In the course of the research, a set of methods was used, namely analytical, graphic and synthesis methods. The main results of the conducted research should be considered the established features of providing assistance to the affected part of the population, which was at the epicentre of combat events in the Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts, as well as specific actions that prevent the deterioration of a person’s psychological state during the war. Identified were the factors needed to provide psychological assistance for thevarious population specifics, taking into account aspecvts such as gender, age, as well as the person’s degree of psychological deterioration. The practical significance of the results of this academic paper lies in the development of an algorithm of actions for providing psychological assistance to Ukrainians during the state of war in the country, as well as conducting the necessary actions and consultations to improve the psychological state of the population affected by the war from specific cities. The results of the study can be used as an example to provide consultations and conduct to the population of other regions of Ukraine and beyond in real time. In addition, the results can be a helpful tool for establishing recommendations for improving mental health in conditions of war.

The aim of the research was to determine the level of professional burnout amongst academic teachers and to demonstrate its relationships with perceived stress and the sense of life satisfaction, as well as selected socio-demographic variables - such as age, gender, marital status and work experience; the title or degree held was an important element of the above analysis. The study included 67 persons (researchers and didactic employees) of one of the faculties at the Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University. Employed were the authors' self-designed socio-demographic questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services (MBI-HSS), Perceived Stress Scale test (PSS-10) and Satisfaction with Life Scale test (SWLS). As a result of the research conducted, it was found that almost two-thirds of the surveyed research and teaching employees had a high level of having lost a sense of personal accomplishment, and not more than one-third also the same in the case of the other two dimensions of professional burnout according to MBI. A significant relationship was found between the self-reported burnout score and the level of the three dimensions of burnout according to the MBI. It was found that the higher the score on the PSS-10, the higher the level of all three dimensions of professional burnout according to MBI in the surveyed research and teaching staff. It was shown that the higher the score on the SWLS, the lower the level of all three dimensions of professional burnout according to MBI in the surveyed research and teaching staff. Almost two-thirds (62.69%) of the surveyed research and teaching staff had a high level of having lost a sense of personal accomplishment, and no more than one in three of the respondents in the case of the other two dimensions of occupational burnout according to the MBI. It might be concluded that the researchers have a significant percentage of professional burnout. A significant relationship was found between the self-reported burnout score and the level of the three dimensions of burnout according to the MBI among the research and teaching staff surveyed. We also confirmed the relationship between perceived stress and life satisfaction with all three dimensions of job burnout.

Opis:
Internet addiction has been identified as a major mental health problem, particularly among young nursing students. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and Internet addiction in this population. This study adopts a descriptive, quantitative, and correlational approach among 388 nursing students enrolled in a Higher Institute of Nursing Professions and Health Techniques in Morocco. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the Big Five Inventory (BFI) were used. A student-test was used to compare the differences in Internet addiction between different categorical groups. Pearson correlation was used to determine correlations between Internet addiction and personality traits. Linear regression analysis was performed to explore the effects of independent variable groups on Internet addiction. The overall prevalence of Internet addiction was 68.3% (AI > 30). There were significant differences in Internet addiction by age group (p = 0.001), gender (p = 0.004), grade (p = 0.003), and reasons for using the Internet (p = 0.004). Neuroticism (β = .493, p < .05) and extraversion (β = .479, p < .05) were positive predictors of Internet addiction, whereas agreeableness (β = -.461 p < .05) and conscientiousness (β = -.395, p < .05) were negative predictors. Personality traits are critical contributors when designing individualized intervention strategies that contribute to the prevention and reduction of Internet addiction in nursing students.

The use of multifunctional smartphones has changed lives in recent years and raised concerns around the world. The ability of smartphones to perform multiple tasks simultaneously is appealing. However, the total amount of time spent using smartphones every day is alarming, and excessive use might impact physical and mental health. The main goal is to determine the adequacy of the term “addiction” for excessive and problematic smartphone use. We present the case of Jalila, a 32-year-old woman who excessively uses her smartphone. We evaluate Jalila’s symptoms, noting that she spends about 9 hours per day on her smartphone. Jalila’s excessive cellphone use includes various addictive habits, such as instant chatting, watching YouTube videos, browsing the web, and visiting social media sites. The total amount of time she spends on these activities indicates a high degree of smartphone usage. When considered in its entirety, the smartphone, with all its functionalities, is a tool that can be used for all of these activities throughout the day. Jalila’s phone activities are primarily focused on community sites, and she uses her smartphone more than she intends to, indicating a loss of control that is affecting her health and well-being.

Arnold–Chiari I malformation is a congenital malformation of the hindbrain characterized by displacement of the cerebellar tonsils into the foramen magnum, pressure on the fourth ventricle, and decreased fluid flow to the basal cisterns. It is a mild form of the neuro-cranio-vertebral syndrome (Arnold–Chiari syndrome) because in many cases it is asymptomatic or has few clinical signs and symptoms of mild severity. The case study presented in the article concerns a 16.5-year-old patient with Arnold–Chiari I malformation following surgery. Based on the neuropsychological diagnosis, clinical symptoms that might result from the course of structural and functional changes in the hindbrain in Arnold–Chiari I syndrome were described and explained. The following were observed: selective difficulties in planning and concentration (maintaining the direction of action) and a weakening of visual perception (described by the patient as a subjective state of derealization). The results of the neuropsychological diagnosis point to certain practical implications for the further therapeutic treatment of patients with a mild form of Arnold–Chiari I malformation, especially as there is a risk of clinical symptoms changing over time due to the posibility of progressive neurodegenerative changes in the hindbrain.

Opis:
The aim of the study was a comprehensive assessment of the profile of executive dysfunctions in patients with MTLE and the search for associations between the results of neuropsychological tests and individual clinical variables. We examined 25 patients with MTLE and 25 healthy controls using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Color Trails Test (CTT), Tower of London (ToL), Victoria Stroop Test (VLT) and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). We considered the possible effects of seizure frequency and lateralization of the epileptogenic zone on various aspects of cognitive functioning. MTLE group scored significantly lower than controls in MoCA (p = 0.000) and needed significantly more time (p=0.000) in CTT-2. They also had lower scores in several parts of ToL (total correct, p=0.004; additional moves, p=0.038; execution time, p=0.001; problem-solving time, p=0.003) and WCST (error responses, p=0.003; conceptual level responses, p=0.000; completed categories, p=0.007; perseverative responses, p=0.004; perseverative errors, p=0.009). There were no significant differences between the clinical and control group in VST and in other indicators of CTT, ToL and WCST. Neither the laterality of the epileptogenic focus nor the seizure frequency were significantly correlated with the results. Patients with MTLE exhibit a wide range of executive dysfunctions. Importantly, the disorders were present only in some aspects of functioning, such as: logical reasoning, planning, switching between tasks, cognitive flexibility and problem-solving, while others e.g. inhibition, remained normal. Our results constitute a significant enrichment of knowledge concerning the specificity of functioning of this group of patients which may help clinicians to introduce solutions to improve the functioning of these patients.

Work stress or job-strain and iso-strain are perceived when there is a conflict between the demands placed on a person and their resources to cope with them. They have negative effects on worker health, and organizational productivity and performance. Our study consists of evaluating work stress and its components. 102 workers of different functions (senior managers, supervisors, technicians and executing workers) volunteered and were invited to complete anonymously the Karasek questionnaire (JCQ). The analysis of the results showed a significant prevalence of iso-strain and job-strain. Thus, low decision latitude and high psychological demands are the most widespread stress factors. These results show the need to disseminate information and prevention programs against work stress to managers and staff to ensure the effective performance of a company.

The lack of standardized, efficient, and dependable lucid dream induction methods is one of the major barriers to studying the clinical and non-clinical applications of dream lucidity. Although the interest in therapeutic usage of lucid dreaming strategies in neuroscience of consciousness studies has increased in recent decades, many of the current induction approaches appear to not be replicable reliably. In this study, a new protocol for bringing on lucid dreaming was created, implemented, analyzed, and contrasted with two distinct other approaches. Techniques to induce dream lucidity include reality testing methods, the wake-and-go-to-bed technique, mnemonic initiation, senses-initiation, and a combination of the above. Before beginning their 2 weeks of lucid dream induction new protocol study, a total of 36 participants filled out a pre-test survey, maintained a dream recall diary and sleep log for the duration of the experiment, and completed a final survey. The findings showed that both the mnemonic induction and senses-initiation techniques were mildly effective in bringing about lucid dreaming. The new hybrid protocol, combining the reality check stra- tegy with dream recall amplification, performed significantly better. For lucid dream induction to work optimally, participants needed to become more proficient at remembering their dreams after waking up, so they were requested to maintain a sleep journal for 7 days before the experiment and throughout the study to enhance their ability to dream recall. There was no correlation found between the quality of one's sleep and the frequency of dream lucidity. The results demonstrated that the new induction protocol was more successful than the other two investigated methods. There are many clinical applications for dream lucidity, such as treatment of recurring and debilitating nightmares, narcolepsy, and PTSD. Therapeu- tic potential also includes future usage for anesthesia awareness and locked-in syndrome. As such, further dream lucidity research remains important.
