Opis:
The division of texts for the purpose of translation into literary and non-literary ones, based mostly on the dominant language function in a given text type, often leads to a stereotypical understanding of the stance of the translator’s competence. Non-literary text translators who focus entirely on that branch of knowledge that a given text refers to and on related terminology may overlook the cultural and intertextual elements. This not only ignores the intention of introducing them into the text, but also may change the meaning of passages in which they are included. The analysis of a book concerning psychology and psychotherapy: Systems of Psychotherapy. A Transtheoretical Analysis, as representing non-literary texts, and G.K. Chesterton’s detective stories, being examples of literary texts, provides some examples of introducing more or less implicit references to the Bible into psychological discourse and literature respectively. Despite the label of scientific texts, American psychological literature is characterized by numerous hidden quotations from other sources which serve various functions: using the already lexicalised phrase- ology or entering into a polemics with the religious doctrine. Consequently, in translating such texts, translators cannot limit themselves to a thorough knowledge of psychology, psychotherapy and terminology connected with those areas, but must also be observant enough to notice interte- xtual traces and then be able to localize them and interpret them correctly. Otherwise the transla- tion may alter the original meaning or introduce an ambiguity which is not welcome in such texts. Thus ‘intertextual competence’ is by no means reserved for literary text translators for whom this type of expertise is obviously of primary importance.

Opis:
The study focuses on Katherine Manfield’s short story entitled Psychology. A detailed analysis and interpretation aim at clarification what is missing in the story, as while reading the story one may feel the lack of something. The main character (“she”) has two guests who are parallel to each other and thus the story can be divided into two parts. Thanks to the second visit (of her female friend) the main character regains the peace of mind, which was ruined by man’s (the first guest’s) deviating from the established code of conduct in their relationship. Definitely, in the text the dominating function is the phatic function of language. However, it does not work as an introduction to a conversation but it is the conversation itself. The story builds a world in which there is no real contact between the characters and it may be interpreted as a reflection of a superfluous reading of a literary work of art. Nonetheless, the story invites the reader to the more careful reception of the literary text, paradoxically, by means of, among others, such a simple plot, a visible discrepancy between the open dialogues and the utterances of “secret selves”, autothematic allusions and the lack of the diachronic dimension.

Opis:
This paper focuses on the Russian and Polish receptions of the works of Roman Senchin, a leading representative of the New Realism Trend in Russian literature. The writer’s debut was his collection of short stories entitled Athens Nights (Афинские ночи), published in 2000. Since then, Senchin has written many works, including The Yeltyshevs (Елтышевы), published in 2009 and translated into several languages. His works are widely commented on, discussed, analyzed, and interpreted not only by Russian literary scholars, critics, and commentators of Russian cultural life, but also by Polish researchers investigating contemporary Russian literature. The article presents the views of literary critics and literary scholars concerning Senchin’s works, as well as reflections on their typical or dominant features. Despite widely differing points of view, Russian literary critics agree that Roman Senchin is the most pessimistic contemporary Russian writer.

Opis:
The article aims at analysing a concept of translator’s creativity and its function performed in the course of rendering neologism in a literary text. The linguistic material constitutes Michael Kandel’s translation of chosen robot names from the S-F novel Cyberiada by Stanisław Lem. The process of rendition is discussed from a literary and linguistic point of view. Therefore, such factors influencing translation as functions a particular name serves in the novel and its linguistic structure are taken into consideration. Moreover, motives for the employment of certain translation procedures, recommended by Peter Newmark, which pertain to neologisms are accounted for. The analysis shows that Kandel’s translation appears to be successful since, owing to his creativity, he menages to render such layers of neologism as its meaning, referent, form, connotation, function and, in some cases, sound. Doubtless, all these are not retained in each case due to obvious language impediments. Nevertheless, the neologisms sufficiently allow the TL reader to get to know futuristic characters of Cyberiada.

Opis:
The theoretical basis of the study is the theory of the concept, including the theory of literary concept. The works of the contemporary Russian dramatist Vassily Sigarev are the materials of the study. The aim of the article is to define the place and the role of the existential problem in Sigarev’s works. The scope and merit of the concept of LIFE is presented on the basis of the chosen fragments of the contexts including the words life, live and their derivatives from the drama Черное молоко. The analysis of the contexts shows that the literary concept which is presented in Sigarev’s works is identified with the nationwide concept. The feature of the author’s individual concept, as a literary version, is as follows: the semantic core of the concept LIFE, from living to philosophic, is presented in a clear way in the drama Черное молоко.
