Opis:
This article includes an overview of methods of energy efficiency improvement in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) applied in Poland. It describes the experience of the implementation of energy efficiency programme in Poland, introduced in 2013 by Polish Agency for Enterprise Development’s. Evaluation of the programme shows that energy savings were over 6-times higher than expected by the programme’s author before its implementation and amounted to 53 TJ. Financial savings were almost 5-times higher than expected and amounted to PLN 7.3m. Guidelines for decision makers which would be responsible for the development of similar programmes in the future are presented.

Opis:
Due to the damage to the environment and climate caused by the generation of electricity in power plants burning fossil fuels, installations generating it from renewable energy sources are constructed. Spatial development plans for communes should consider their location. In Poland, generation of electricity in photovoltaic cells, wind farms and agricultural biogas plants has the greatest development potential. Due to the nuisance to people and the environment, wind turbines and agricultural biogas plants must be located far from residential buildings. Such conditions exist in sparsely populated rural areas. The observed development of single-family housing in rural areas is the result of the search for cheap construction sites and no local spatial development plans in most areas of rural communes. Dispersed housing construction restricts the construction of wind farms and agricultural biogas plants and thus poses a threat to renewable sources of wind and biogas energy produced in agricultural biogas plants. The situation may be changed by the requirement to include in spatial development plans the needs related to the construction of installations generating electricity from renewable energy sources and the construction of micro and small biogas plants directly at the sites where waste is generated.

Opis:
The article analyses the types of waste generated in economy and the possibilities of their management, on the example of Poland. The main focus was on using selected types of waste for methane production. The impact of the decomposing mass of organic waste on the production of greenhouse gases was examined and various types of biogas plants operating in Poland were presented (biogas plants at landfills, biogas plants at sewage treatment plants, agricultural biogas plants). The article also presents the benefits for the economy from the use of methane from methane drainage. Unfortunately, in Poland, methane resources are used to a small extent. In the case of mines, landfills or sewage treatment plants it is related to high costs of constructing methane capture installations, which are not offset by revenues from sales of gas and green certificates. Although much more favourable blue certificates have been introduced for agricultural biogas plants, the obstacle standing in the way of their progress is the lack of local spatial development plans for the places designated for their construction.

The Polish energy sector is shaped by a combination of regulations, especially those pertaining to environmental protection, domestic and international energy resource availability, and pricing of both renewable and nonrenewable resources, in addition to the economics of energy exploration, transport, refining, production, distribution, and final energy use. The article outlines the main global factors shaping the use of energy sources in Poland and in the world, and proposes that strategic management of the Polish energy industry be based on minimizing the discounted unit social cost of final energy use as the criterion for optimizing decisions on choosing energy sources and conversion technologies.

Opis:
Research into environmental pollution and global warming has induced the energy industry and various levels of government to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, especially coal and oil. One of the options being considered is increasing nuclear power generation, which has the advantage of high production capacity that can be fully utilized, low fuel consumption and low cost relative to the amount of electricity being generated. However, despite technological progress, the share of nuclear energy in the world’s energy mix is decreasing, especially in countries with highly developed economies. The reasons for this are high capital expenditures and their uncontrolled increase, fear of contamination of the natural environment in the event of a failure or terrorist attack as well as difficulties in long-term disposal of radioactive waste. This article analyzes the development of nuclear power as an alternative to fossil fuels in the pursuit of sustainable development, in particular with regard to investment outlays, the cost of generating electricity, environmental protection and security.

Opis:
In each touristic city waste management system has to overcome the impact of visitors. Dubrovnik, famous as popular touristic destination, particularly notices tourists visiting city. Therefore potential impact of waste management in touristic cities, such as Dubrovnik, is presented. The paper includes estimation of yearly waste production by inhabitants and tourists visiting those city. Waste digestion is a method for biogas production. On the basis of the preceding estimation combined-cycle installation generating heat and electricity is proposed. The model combines Brayton cycle with low temperature Kalina model based on Rankine cycle. Literature analysis presents state of the art in this field. The simulation is prepared in Cycle-Tempo. Numerical analyses lead to technical issues, which have to be taken into consideration during waste utilization with such installation. Thus benefits and threats are discussed. The presented analysis assesses the maximal electric gain, which subsequently should consider waste preparation and purification.

Opis:
The paper presents a methodology for evaluating the Best Available Techniques Not Entailing Excessive Costs (BATNEEC) options for the management of by-products from biomass combustion - ash. Biomass ash BA was collected from Green Energy Block in Połaniec (Poland). Four variant of BA disposal were analysed: 1st – the storage of BA on conventional municipal waste landfills; 2nd, 3rd, 4th - use of BA for fertilisers production (2nd – 70% of BA, 3rd - 45% of BA, 4th - 90% of BA). Technical, environmental and economic consequences of the actions in the field of waste management technology were considered. BATNEEC evaluation indicated that the collected BA on dump (1st variant) is technical, environmental and economic inefficient, this solution has received lowest score - 29 points. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th variants have received 124, 113 and 30 points, respectively. This indicates that there are quantitative restrictions on substitution of nutrients in mineral fertilisers. Due to the possibility of secondary pollution during waste usage in agriculture, the use of BA in fertiliser products requires compliance with environmental rules - only the nutrient rich and rather heavy metal poor fractions of BA shall be used for fertilising and soil improvement purposes.
