The present paper is an attempt to discuss the issue of terminology management as a part of the translator or LSP training process as well as methods for its implementation in the MA programme “Linguistics in Specialised Communication”. The paper outlines the curricular approach to the teaching of terminology management through the delivery of a theoretical and a practical module. The latter includes three elements: conventional terminology work, terminology management and the integration of term bases prepared or made available in the process of translation with the aid of the TMS and CAT tools. The practical work was based on small and medium-sized terminology projects carried out by university students.

In our current information society, terminology is developing very fast in every field across the globe and large multilingual and multinational organisations increasingly require specialists in terminology and specialised translation. Our survey falls within the field of research on specialised translation teaching and, particularly, the training of translators in the field of terminology at an academic level. Our starting point was the statement that the search for the right terms and other tasks related to terminology represent a significant part of the tasks of every translator and that terminology is one of the skills of a translator. In this paper, we compare the place given to terminology in translator training at the university in Greece and in Poland, both in foreign philology and translation training programmes. After providing some general information on the terminological work performed by translators and on the skills required in this field, we compare and comment the results of our analysis of the terminology courses offered to philology and translation students in Greek and Polish universities. In the last part of the paper, we examine the place of terminology in both countries and the forms of its institutionalisation at the national level, which can either encourage or jeopardize the process of teaching terminology.

When it comes to terminology, the Dutch-speaking regions have a long tradition of collaboration. Since the eighties there have been several partnerships and committees, all lead by the Dutch Language Union. There was a growing awareness that a central point was needed to bring together all information concerning Dutch terminology and to make it generally accessible. Since 2016, the Dutch Language Institute (INT) in Leiden manages and develops all Dutch language materials. The whole spectrum of language, including professional language, regional languages and dialects, is now given attention, making it no more than logical for the INT to accommodate the Centre of Expertise for Dutch Terminology (ENT). The main task of the ENT is to offer information, facilities, products and services in the field of terminology. Apart from that, research is done into the professional language of three specific fields: legal language, medical language and the language of higher education. In this article I will go deeper into the wide range of information supplied by the ENT, including specific software tools for terminological tasks. I will also describe several of the terminology projects that are being conducted at the Dutch Language Institute.

Nowadays more and more people are using computers and the Internet; consequently, they are continually in touch with computing terminology. The study and analysis of such terminology thus seems very important not only from the point of view of a linguist, but from one of an average computer user as well. Polish language for computers and the Internet is in a state of constant change today: new terms, mostly borrowed from English, enter the language all the time. The aim of the present paper is to analyze the origin of the newest lexical borrowings of English, many of which have not been noted in the dictionaries and/or discussed in the literature on the subject, used in Polish language for computers and the Internet. Special attention will be devoted to the morphology of such loans; among other things, special morphological processes will be discussed, such as the formation of diminutives of computer terms. The research is based on a corpus, collected and analyzed by the author of the study. The corpus comprises of texts taken from various Internet message boards devoted to computers and the Internet.

Opis:
This article concentrates on the automatic extraction of collocations, defined by the Explanatory and Combinatorial Lexicology as phraseological units composed by two elements – the base and the collocate. The aim of this article is to propose a methodology to follow in order to automatically extract collocations from a terminological corpus. This method takes into account different measures: the syntactic dependences between the items of the collocation, their frequency, their tendency to co-occur (PMI) and their specificity to the e-commerce domain. After having explained the theoretical framework, the methodology is illustrated using a pilot study of the French terminology of e-commerce. In the pilot study, data were extracted from a corpus made up of e-commerce texts, which are drawn from a larger corpus called DIACOM-fr, a corpus in the process of being built at the University of Verona within the project Digital Humanities Applied to Foreign Languages and Literatures. Data extraction was primarily done using two tools: Stanza a Python natural language analysis package developed by the Stanford NLP group and TermoStat an automatic extractor tool developed at the Observatoire de Linguistique Sens-Texte of the University of Montreal.

The aim of this article is to present and discuss selected results of a survey study conducted on the popularity and use of particular terms in the field of phonodidactic lapsology. The study shows that specialists in the field of teaching foreign languages and in the field of speech-language pathology use the same terms while referring to different kinds of errors. Also, the definition boundaries of individual lexemes are more or less blurred, depending on the case in which they are used (for example, substitution). Moreover, the definitions of particular lexemes are frequently not precise enough and vary depending on the area of study within which they are used. Due to the fact that one of the criteria for recognizing scientific terminology is its frequency, efforts were made to take a closer look at how teachers of Polish as a foreign language most often define errors made by foreigners which consist in replacing one sound with another.

The use of terms in discourse is characterized by the presence of definitions aimed at explaining and clarifying their meaning in a given field, both for specialists and for non-specialists. This defining activity associates with terminological units, thus considered in their textual dimension, over time since their appearance in the language as neologisms. Although the question of definitions can be explored from different angles for the general language and for specialized language, in this paper we are interested in the automatic identification and analysis of definitions in a diachronic corpus. We intend to reflect on the data offered by these definitions with the objective of offering a terminographic description focused on the diachronic aspect of terms. After automatic identification, we will observe the definitions in two phases of terms: the moment of their appearance in the French language and the moment of their dissemination and lexicalization. Our attention is focused on the definitions characterizing the French terms in the commercial field in a diachronic perspective, within the DIACOM corpus.

Opis:
The Arabic lexicon is built on consonantal roots. Unlike agglutinative languages, it uses internal flexion. However, a significant part of modern Arabic scientific terminology is borrowed from Western languages, especially French and English. Extensive borrowing of this kind risks the emergence of two distinct subsets within the Arabic lexicon: a. the general vocabulary includes the words used by everyone in everyday life. This vocabulary is built on consonant roots, mainly with three consonants. Unlike French and English dictionaries, Arabic dictionaries are organized by roots and not by entries in alphabetical order. ; b. the specialized vocabulary includes the terms of scientific and technical disciplines used by specialists in their fields. This vocabulary is built on syllables like the vocabulary of European languages. This text will examine the problems of extensive register-specific lexical borrowing, and the risk of fracture that this presents.

The article presents the diversity and scope difference of Polish and French linguistic terms appearing in works devoted to the language feminization. The author quotes the terms most often used in Polish and French literature on the subject, discusses their scope and tradition of use. Different ways of understanding the concept of feminization are analyzed. The aim of the article is an attempt to organize the terminological chaos faced by researchers who want to conduct contrastive research on multilingual material. The problem encountered in comparative research involves establishing a common scope to which the terms refer and interpreting the differences. The question arises whether Polish and French researchers, when using freely the terms nazwy żeńskie/les formes féminines/féminisation, really mean the same thing. The author tries to answer the question of how to compare Polish and French exponents of femininity, especially for the purposes of quantitative lexicographic research, and whether Polish male lexemes with immobilized inflection should be considered female names in comparative research, analogically to French epicene nouns? Perhaps due to the lack of semantic symmetry between the terms, one study should develop different criteria for the analysis of Polish and French lexical material.

This contribution examines the formation, evolution and use of terms in astronomy. The term planet is discussed in detail through the analysis of specialized contemporary sources, with focus on how the discoveries of Neptune, Uranus and Pluto changed the meaning of planet. Consideration is also given to other bodies originally classified as planets, illustrating a repeating pattern of scientific advancement blurring the boundaries of what planet denotes before linguistic and terminological usage adapts to reflect scientific understanding. Further consideration is given to the qualifier dwarf in denoting bodies both too small and too large to be classified as planets, which constitutes a modern blurring of the lines of planethood in the field of exoplanetology. Through the analysis of three leading astronomical journals, it is shown that despite the lack of a centralised authority actively regulating terminology, the prototype term Hot Jupiter has engendered new series of terms using differing terminological and conceptual regimes to prioritize different characteristics of exoplanets, allowing for efficient communication in specialised and general discourse.

We recently noticed increased media coverage of the expression/collocation réfugiés environnementaux. The aforementioned collocation is omnipresent in the French media; it has been circulating and has been in use for over twenty years. However, why has environmental refugee been chosen in English? The main argument is that this expression officially appeared as early as in 1985, in the report for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), so it is a UN term. There are currently other names that supplant it: déplacés or migrants; nonetheless, the term réfugié has a much greater impact given the implicity of its meaning. We shall see why the term réfugiés environnementaux/climatiques is in current use and why it is preferred to déplacés and migrants climatiques/environnementaux. The aim of this article is to detail the terms employed expanding on dictionary explanations, as well as to clarify the analysis of the journalistic and legal contexts. To conclude, we shall unveil the terms which seem to us best suited.

Fashion, including the ready-to-wear business, is a major sector in the French economy, larger than the car or aerospace industries. Additionally, Paris remains one of the world’s fashion capitals. Yet, the study of the related terminology appears quite restricted in France. This field does not seem considered as a fully-fledged specialty, even though this terminology is part of the daily life of speakers. Apart from lexical borrowings – from English mainly – three recurrent phenomena may cause interlingual and intralingual difficulties, which could be perceived as terminological boundaries: ellipsis, which turns borrowings into pseudo-borrowings, terminology renewal, characterized by creations and disappearances of terms, and semantic shift, characterized by extensions, modifications, and restrictions. After a presentation of the French terminology of the women’s ready-to-wear business, this paper illustrates these phenomena (ellipsis, regular terminology renewal and semantic shift) and their impacts on interlingual and intralingual translation. This illustration is based on a diachronic corpus, covering the period from the 1950s until 2020, compiled from French mail order catalogs.

In the 1970s in the Soviet Union (by the standard: GOST 16448-70 Bibliografiâ. Terminy i opredeleniâ, Moskva 1971) the top-down term ‘библиографоведение’ was introduced to denote a scientific discipline that is part of the complex of bibliological disciplines, researching and developing issues of the theory, history and methodology of bibliographies as well as methodology, technology and organization of bibliographic activity. After the term became popular in the Soviet Union, there were suggestions in several sources in the years 1974–1999 that its equivalents also began to function in other languages – Polish, English, German, French. The analysis of data from Google Books Ngram Viewer, carried out for the other article (see: Jakub Maciej Łubocki, O problemie wieloznaczności terminu ‘bibliografia’ kolejny raz – o terminie ‘bibliografoznawstwo’ po raz pierwszy, „Roczniki Biblioteczne”, 2018 (R. 62), s. 135–178; doi.org/10.19195/0080-3626.62.9), allowed for a proper (mainly negative) assessment of these suggestions. This article highlights the advantages and disadvantages of conducting an analysis with the use of this tool. It also allows us to shed light on the problem of – sometimes too careless – equivalence of terms (and thus improper equivalence) and the possibility of its verification in the absence of data in the available dictionaries.

This paper focuses on the question of calquing or loan translation. Basic tendencies in the field of borrowing are presented, one of which is to preserve loanwords while the other one to form calques. Various definitions of calquing are included along with the common distinction between semantic and structural calques understood in terms of polysemy and creation of new linguistic entities. Problems with borrowing and calquing are indicated on the basis of traditional classifi cations. The discussion leads to a newer classification which is derived from Carstensen and Busse (1994), i.e. one which leads to the distinction between calques and loan formations. Examples to indicate the accuracy of both categories are derived from computer terminology: both doublett es and various degree of translation. This part is based on a corpus study of text in Gazeta Wyborcza. Two tendencies are identified in this respect: creation of families of new terms and formation of new terms in accordance with the principles followed in earlier terminology. Concurrently, other factors, which lie beyond the realm of contrastive linguistics, are pointed as the reasons for the existing diversity in terminology. They are around the concept of sociolinguistic domains, in accordance with setting and participant framework. One of the reasons for not forming calques can be associated with the etymology of terms which inhibits this process.
