Opis:
Today’s internationalisation of scholarship necessitates its publication in English. This ever-more frequent requirement poses a particular challenge for many non-English art historians. The study of works of art typically starts with the description of the object under investigation. For a description to be accurate, a precise terminology is essential. Specialist terminology is normally created by the makers of particular types of objects, as well as international scholars conceptualising artistic phenomena, they do it in their working, usually native, languages. Multilingualism brings about particular conceptual challenges when developing domain-specific terminology and its translations into other languages. Additional challenges come forth when information is to be processed automatically. The complex relationship between particular material cultural heritage and its multilingual descriptions is discussed here, based on the terminology concerning the early modern Protestant church building as an expression of particular liturgical needs. Owing to the autonomy of national Protestant Churches, new arrangements of the church interior – in terms of its structure, fixtures and specific functions – were favoured, which the relevant naming and conceptualisation should reflect. The author focuses on some of the problems that arise when research findings are to be presented in a language other than the language(s) in which research was conducted.

Opis:
The purpose of this study (based on the analysis and discussion of cases of erroneous use of words monografia / monograph, autentykacja/authentication, kolaboracja/collaboration, pamflet/pamphlet, stary druk/alter Druck, Frühdruck/old print, old book) was to outline the problem of term equivalence resulting from unintentional linguistic interference (loanwords, tautonymy, anisomorphy, calques) in the communication of various members of the scientific community (authors, translators, editors and proofreaders). Multilingual dictionaries, noting only the equivalents without indicating their meaning or examples of their use, not only do not protect against committing such errors, but can also be their source. The study resulted in a concept of a multilingual encyclopaedic dictionary, which, by preventing the incorrect equivalence of terms in the field of document types, will help in formulating correct oral and written presentations, descriptions of documents used in information resources, their correct translation and building search tools on their basis – in particular, bibliographic databases and digital libraries, where they are used as a search or selection criteria for materials.

Opis:
In the 1970s in the Soviet Union (by the standard: GOST 16448-70 Bibliografiâ. Terminy i opredeleniâ, Moskva 1971) the top-down term ‘библиографоведение’ was introduced to denote a scientific discipline that is part of the complex of bibliological disciplines, researching and developing issues of the theory, history and methodology of bibliographies as well as methodology, technology and organization of bibliographic activity. After the term became popular in the Soviet Union, there were suggestions in several sources in the years 1974–1999 that its equivalents also began to function in other languages – Polish, English, German, French. The analysis of data from Google Books Ngram Viewer, carried out for the other article (see: Jakub Maciej Łubocki, O problemie wieloznaczności terminu ‘bibliografia’ kolejny raz – o terminie ‘bibliografoznawstwo’ po raz pierwszy, „Roczniki Biblioteczne”, 2018 (R. 62), s. 135–178; doi.org/10.19195/0080-3626.62.9), allowed for a proper (mainly negative) assessment of these suggestions. This article highlights the advantages and disadvantages of conducting an analysis with the use of this tool. It also allows us to shed light on the problem of – sometimes too careless – equivalence of terms (and thus improper equivalence) and the possibility of its verification in the absence of data in the available dictionaries.

Opis:
In the literature concerning this subject three phases of development characterizing Polish law emerge. The first phase covers the inter-war period, when five different legal codes were in effect across the Polish state. The second phase characterizes the time of the Polish Peoples Republic, and the third dates from the political changeover in 1989. The present article concerns civil law operating in the fi rst of the above-mentioned periods, specifically the German civil code in effect in the western parts of the Second Republic. Particular attention is given here to Volume IV of family law and to the nominal compounds occurring in it. Nominal compounds enjoy a privileged place in German word-formation. In the present article they are subjected to an analysis by comparing them to their Polish equivalents as used in official translations from the German civil codes of 1923 and 1933. First, the aims of translating the German civil code during the Second Republic are discussed. Next, the semantic relationships holding between and among the elements of German Compounds—whether modifying, appositive, or lexical paraphrase—are analyzed, and their equivalents in Polish are given, among which the most common turn out to be adjectives and adnominal genitives. The majority of the correspondents to German compounds in contemporary Polish turn out to be conventional phrases; only a small number are no-longer used calques from German. Among the latter are translations of German legal concepts with no obvious correspondent in Polish, such as laws covering civil rights (Ehrenrechte) or mortgages (Grundschulden).
