In this contribution I present a meaning list for cognate searches in which meanings are, unlike in similar lists of “basic vocabulary” for the same purpose, organized according to semantic principles. This list is designed to identify possible cognates, which can then be scrutinized more closely in search for hitherto undetected genealogical relationships between languages, in a more effective way. Rather than proposing a completely new set of meanings to be featured, the list combines those most commonly used in extant lists of basic vocabulary such as the Swadesh or the Leipzig/Jakarta List, but introduces several design principles which are jointly able to represent also complex semantic relationships in the context of wordlists.

The article explores the limit phenomenon in terms of its participation in the process of the formation and transformation of meanings. The functioning of the concept is considered on the basis of the dramatic poem Cassandre by Lesya Ukrainka. Since the work is based on myth and itself imitates the structure of a myth, thus revealing a noticeable feature of European culture at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries regarding the fundamental developments of mytho-critical schools, the border phenomenon is illuminated through the prism of two aspects – content and form. The first aspect focuses on existential meanings; it is about the formation or transformation of meanings at the moment a person reaches his limit or the limit of the world (first of all, a meeting with fate or death). The second aspect concerns the phenomenon of myth and the manifestation-formation of new meanings at the moment of interaction between the myth matrix and its literary interpretation. The focus of the analysis on the threshold phenomena of Cassandre demonstrates the playwright’s skill in working with the ancient myth. Lesya Ukrainka preserves the outline of the myth and the literary image of the Trojan prophetess, but also inscribes new meanings that are relevant to her time, thus universalizing them, and revives myth itself as a universal form of preserving and transporting meanings

The aim of this article is to examine the social meaning of two proper names – Russie and Pologne – in French press discourse. Assuming that the social meaning of a given concept is constructed in the nomination process, it seems justified to examine the ways proper names – traditionally considered to be associated with specific referents – receive their social meaning through the act of nomination. The study of social meaning seems possible with the reconstruction of the so-called designational paradigm, which is a list of reformulations of the initial word. This study deals with two kinds of reformulations of country names: those that derive from a geopolitical vocabulary and those that derive from a geographical vocabulary. Comparing the role and functioning of these, we can assume that they serve two different discursive strategies: the westernisation of Russia and the orientalisation of Poland. The observation of the role and the function of these reformulations shows that the social meaning of both geographical names is no more than a discursive construct.

This paper deals with the social meaning of Russia in the French Press Discourse. The particular aim is to examine the nature and the role of negation, which seems to be one of the mechanisms that have a considerable impact on the construction of the meaning of the Proper Name. We discuss, on the one hand, the role of negation that affects the reformulations of la Russie within attributive structures and, on the other hand, the negation in the conditional propositions of structure si A, B (if A, B). Corpus material is taken from the French national daily press and published in March 2014, at the time of the annexation of Crimea.

The aim of the article is to consider the meaning (description of semantic function) of terms in the humanities sciences. The author assumes that the terms in scientific texts in the field of humanities should be considered differently from those in natural sciences, and this is primarily due to the specificity of the object of research, which is dealt with by humanists. In the central part of the argument, the characteristics of humanities are presented in relation to the subject of its research, then the characteristics of the term referring to such, and not another, object of research. The author concludes that in the process of searching for the meaning of terms of the humanities sciences, one should first of all refer to the tradition in which the term exists. It turns out that the meaning of the term is not related to its denotation.

The main goal of the essay is to discuss and elaborate on the communicative aspects of academic matriculation and inauguration ceremonies that take place at Polish universities. The word inauguration (lat. inauguratio) implies a ceremonial induction into something. Still, in Polish, it is very commonly used with an adjective ‘solemn’ or ‘ceremonious’ to mark the character of the official and ceremonial first day of the academic year. What is more, the ceremony is almost always organized in accordance with a commonly accepted prototypical program which divides the ceremony into two parts: the primary – traditional part and the additional – supplementary part. The careful analysis of the ceremony from the perspective of communication studies and communicology can shed a new light on the interpretation of the importance of such events. According to various representatives and supporters of the theory of speech acts, the ceremonies can be described as specific acts of communication that can be considered as perlocution acts. The author of the essay tries to elaborate on the understanding of the ceremonies from a broader sociological, communicological perspective.

The paper aims at presenting the contemporary usage of the verb shall in Modern English. The traditional principles governing the usage of shall constitute a complex paradigm in which the implications of different forms change according to the person of the subject. The statistics show that the verb shall experienced a dramatic fall in frequency of use between the early 1960s and 1990s. The author is aiming at presenting the evolution of the verb shall throughout the centuries, its reorganization and the way it has altered. The Old English shall expressed obligation/necessity whereas the Middle English usage indicated to the predicative element of the verb in question. Furthermore, the author explores the difference in application between will and shall. The semantic shift of 'shall' appears to be a natural consequence of the competition it lost to will. Moreover, in 'shall' seems to be retracting to the narrow niche of seldom usage. The article also indicates to the use of shall in present-day English both in American and British varieties. In American English, which is commonly assumed to be more advanced and open to change than British English, 'shall' seems to survive in the contexts where it expresses deontic meaning.

Opis:
The paper describes typography as one of the mechanisms contributing to the construction of social meanings.According to the French discourse analysis, we assume that social meaning results from the nomination activity, which involves multiple and diverse naming of one element of the real world. Obtaining social meaning is possible by recreating the so-called designational paradigm, i.e. establishing a list of regular reformulations of the initial word introduced by metalanguage (definitional sentences), coordination, diaphors and typography. This work mainly focuses on the latter. The subsequent parts of the article discuss the impact of the comma, colon, parentheses, double dash and quotation marks on meaning construction. The description of each of them is complemented by examples derived from the study on the social meaning of the proper name Pologne (Poland), created and disseminated by the French press. It turns out that the typographic symbols are not a simple visual representation of pauses or intonation. They also have a semantic and pragmatic role. Typography signals the reformulations (comma, colon, parenthesis, dash), introduces the secondary predicates (comma, dash) and allows a journalist to distance him/herself from the created meanings (quotation marks).

Un an and Je m’en vais by Jean Echenoz, two seemingly independent novels, constitute in fact an instance of transfiction, or rather a novelistic diptych, subtly embedded in the common fictional universe by means of various textual elements such as characters, setting and diegetic analogies. Its aim is not only the unusual extension and expansion of the original fiction, based on ambiguous narration, full of understatements and contradictions, which suggests rather than tells a story in a classic way. Both texts show many extended thematic similarities, which further emphasize their structural complementarity and give it a deeper meaning. Referring to selected theories of transfiction, this article explores the way in which Echenoz plays with the conventions of serial literature and uses them to show in two versions the vicissitudes of human affairs.

This paper discusses how socio-communicative practices that originate in oral tradition, with a focus on Brazilian legends, manifest themselves in the digital environment. It foregrounds the production of discourse objects as a category of analysis and approaches the theoretical assumptions of linguistic and cultural studies through an interdisciplinary approach. It is a study of a theoretical-analytical nature that aims to answer the following research questions: How are Brazilian folk narratives constructed in multimodal texts-based interactions in digital environment? How are the objects of discourse constructed in the analyzed texts? The analyzed texts were collected through screenshots of interactions on public Facebook pages. It is hoped that the results will allow us to understand how digital texts are constructed and show how referential processes contribute to text construction and meaning production, deepening studies of language use in digital environments.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present my ongoing PhD research project concerning the social meaning construction in thanatological discourse. The project is in line with the research principles of the French school of discourse analysis, which places press discourse at the center of interest (cf. Moirand 2007, Veniard 2013). The representatives of this school of thought show that the mass media, being an intermediary of information for a given linguistic community, influence the way the community perceives the world. Therefore, the media, including mainstream press, by using certain nominations in repetitive way, imprint them in the discursive memory of a given community. The media name people, objects, phenomena and events in order to explain major crises and to assign them a place in the usual order of things (cf. Siblot 1997, 2001, Veniard 2013). The nomination takes place in an anaphoric network that ensures the coherence of the text. In our view, the contribution of anaphora, especially nominal anaphora, to the production of meaning in thanatological discourse is fundamental. We will show that anaphoric relations are not based on linguistic parameters (e.g. lexical relations), but on the discoursive memory of a given community.

The thirst for truth and constitution of meaning can be considered the spiritus movens of Augustin Méridier’s life, the main character of Joseph Malègue’s novel Augustin ou le Maître est là (1933), whose author has been proclaimed “the Catholic Proust” ( José Fontaine, Wanda Rupolo, Jeanne Ancelet-Hustache, Jacques Madaule). Several models of the quest for truth can be found in the formation of meaning as presented in the novel, among others, Socrates’ pattern, which consider the truth an absolute value, and models originating from ancient philosophical schools. Nevertheless, it is the model of Saint Augustine which deserves an in-depth analysis. Augustin Méridier (whose first name is not coincidental), driven towards positivism by the works of positive exegetes and the Catholic modernism authors, is torn between faith and science, and finally turns against religion. His internal battles can be read as the re-interpretation of the medieval “fides quærens intellectum” problem. The hero’s quest for meaning, reflecting the sacred dimension of understanding, finally culminates in the union of faith and reason, as he comes to the conclusion that transcendence cannot be, as Auguste Comte wanted, immanent to humanity. Thus, the present article attempts to analyse Augustin Meridier’s path towards faith and meaning according to Confessions of Augustine of Hippo, who also, having abandoned the Christian faith in the interest of the search for rational meaning, found the Truth in the union of faith and reason. Philosophy as a means to reach the truth and the Augustinian motto “Crede ut intelligas, intellige ut credas” as a way of understanding can be then regarded as two main axes of this analysis.

At the crossroads of philosophy, religion and literature arises the question of meaning. The feeling of absurdity of the world and the loss of the meaning of life, accompanied by a desperate attempt to (re)create it, are typical for people stigmatized by borderline experiences of collective traumas, such as war. As a combatant of the Second World War and a great admirer of Marcel Proust, Claude Simon undertakes a tireless search for lost meaning, which emerges discreetly behind the pessimism with which he describes the absurdity of the world. A close reading of his most famous novel, La Route des Flandres (1960), reveals to us some subtle indications about this quest for meaning, which becomes also a quest for identity.
