Opis:
The very text is directly related to the text entitled “On the Process of Translation of a Literary Text. A Case Study of “Edzio” by Bruno Schulz (an overview of an exercise)” published a year ago (see Chruszczewski 2019). “The vast majority of texts regarding a number of issues connected with the notion of translation describe the translated text as a product – that is another text rendered into another culture, not even mentioning another language. The idea of this exercise was based upon an attempt of having a look at how exactly the process of translation of a literary text would proceed. This short presentation is just a small fragment of a much larger work devoted to the process of translation” (Chruszczewski 2019: 57–58). It is a presentation of a translation exercise undertaken by ten students coming from two different seminar groups. Each of the students have translated from Polish into English a text of a comparable length. All the students are bilingual, and fluent in English. None of them is a native speaker of English. After the translation exercise was completed the texts were assembled and integrated into a coherent literary narration in the target language. All students were asked to try to write down their impressions while they were translating the text, including what was the rationale behind their decisions. As one can notice, it was relatively easy for the students to provide interesting translations, but the majority of them found it exceptionally difficult to describe their choices as translators. The above can be a hint for future theorists of translation studies to start large scale interdisciplinary projects based on the interesting fact that translation processes (in plural!) can work differently within the minds of translators even if they are almost at the same age and they come from quite similar cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Opis:
Jacek Izydor Fisiak was born on May 10, 1936 in Konstantynów Łódzki and passed away on June 3, 2019 in Poznań, Poland. Eighty-three years of life is usually treated as a fairly long period of time, but if we take into account not only the passage of time itself but also the intensity of filling the events of this period with content, only then can we – but all the time only with some approximation – reflect on the real phenomenon of Professor Jacek Fisiak’s life and work. This phenomenon is perfectly reflected in the travesty, light in form but deep in content, of one of the most famous poems in the English-speaking world by one of the pre-Raphaelite artists, William Blake, entitled The Tiger. Blake's poem was adapted to reflect the spirit of Professor Fisiak – a man of unquenchable thirst for action – by Professor Tomasz P. Krzeszowski, a friend and the first doctor of humanities promoted by Professor Jacek Fisiak. Using Blake’s travesty as a refrain for this short farewell text, I intend to give the floor to Professor Fisiak’s friends and build this text out of their recollections.

Opis:
The entire text is just a small fraction of a much larger work (still not finished) describing an attempt at an analysis of narrative reports interpreting reality. It is a very brief overview of Jacek Hugo-Bader’s ( JHB) idiosyncratic ways of rendering reality into his excellent very much field-work based narratives. The author of the text is of the opinion that the true meaning of the communicated text changes not only with the style of the text; the understanding of the actual meaning is based upon the profound knowledge of the interpreted information. There is only one way to get to the core of the true meaning of the described reality, it is done by the method known as participant observation. JHB knows that very well, and that is why all his narrative reports are preceded by extended field works.

Opis:
The vast majority of texts regarding a number of issues connected with the notion of translation describe the translated text as a product – that is as another text rendered into another culture, not even mentioning another language. The idea of this exercise was based upon an attempt of having a look at how exactly the process of translation of a literary text would proceed. All the participants of the exercise wished to see if it would be at all possible to work upon one and the same text, and continue working on it at certain randomly selected points. This short paper is just a small fragment of a much larger work devoted to the process of translation. It is a presentation of a translation exercise undertaken by seven students. Each of the six students have translated two pages, the seventh student was supposed to assemble and unify the translated texts, integrating them into a coherent narration in the target language. All students were asked to try to write down their impressions while they were working on the text, including what was the rationale behind their decisions. As it appears it was not very difficult for the students to come up with quite interesting translations, but it was much more harder for them to describe their choices as translators. As one can notice, the exercise went very well, the students entertained themselves, and at the same time perhaps they also understood a little better that the translation processes worked differently within their minds, even though after all they were working on the text of the same short literary work by Bruno Schultz.

Praca o takim rozmachu powinna zawierać obszerne przedstawienie aktualnego stanu badań, a takiego właśnie przedstawienia aktualnego stanu badań brakuje w recenzowanej rozprawie.

Anthropological Linguistics
Contact Linguistics

Opis:
The idea for this text was dictated by the need to develop a comprehensive taxonomy of Language Anthropology, and in particular the place occupied by Anthropological Linguistics in this classification. The first extensive attempts to determine the exact place that Anthropological Linguistics occupies in this taxonomy were presented over a decade ago (Chruszczewski 2010, 2011), and they were later developed and modified (Chruszczewski 2018). The present classification of Anthropological Linguistics is based upon the current state of knowledge and above all on research undertaken in numerous scientific centers around the world where it is obvious that language is an integral part of human culture and it is recognized that both of the phenomena influence each other and that the most reliable results can be obtained by studying language and culture simultaneously. It goes without saying that scholars are thinking, hard-working and creative beings. Therefore, the increase and updating of knowledge, including research fields and disciplines, is very large and takes place very quickly. Many working research ideas from not so far ago are already recognized and autonomous scientific disciplines. Hence, I share the opinion of those researchers who believe that from time to time it is necessary to modernize, re-describe and explain anew the classification of the disciplines in which we work, so that the readers of our works can see how we ourselves understand the discipline of our core research. On the one hand the following classification of Anthropological Linguistics can be seen as exactly this kind of explanation of how the author of the paper understands this research field, and on the other hand it can be seen also as an open invitation for discussion.

Opis:
The paper presents an anthropolinguistic study of Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign discourse. The study can be situated within the scope of political linguistics. The interdisciplinary method of research applied here rests upon the understanding of human communication functioning in terms of communicational grammars of specific discourses that comprise rules of language use set against the background of immediate contexts of use. The key idea underbracing this study is that language is a rule-governed, conventions-based system of practice (e.g., de Saussure [1916] 2011, Sapir 1921, Hymes 1972, Saville–Troike [1982] 2003, Lucy [1996] 1999) and a conventional type of performance which allows for building a nexus of typified relations. Another overarching goal of this paper is to show that human interaction is mostly both a structurally hardwired and functionally (pragmatically) driven linguistic practice. The analysis sets out to explore Donald Trump’s texts according to the Anthropolinguistic Model of Communication (AMC) (Strukowska 2022) as a pattern recognition model that provides a contextual overview of elements of communication and functions as a solid platform for documenting discursive practices (Chruszczewski 2011: 199–263).

It is assumed that in the case of contact languages, it is the nonverbal context of use of these languages that may be the key factor in determining the nature of each language. Contact languages, perhaps even to a greater extent than larger or more common, the so-called national languages, may establish the identity of the speech communities that use them. The text presents also selected ways in which contact languages arise, adding to the types of languages known to science, such as endogenous and exogenous contact languages, a new name for the category of languages, which are isogenic contact languages.
