Opis:
Critical thinking in terms of psycho‐pedagogy: towards individual cognitive independence and responsibility: The paper is devoted to the methods of recognition and development of critical thinking. In the initial part synthetically are presented the views of researchers connected with an education perspective (the definition and features of critical thinking). Within this aspect crucial appears the question: why are we afraid of criticism? What are the reasons why we do not apply it in contact with the cultural message, with the opinions and actions of people? For relatively seldom is it used as a support in discussion, in making decisions and choices. In an attempt to answer such formulated problems presented is an outline of the author’s classification for inhibitors that prevent or hinder the application of critical thinking. Here the main claim is that in the modern world of news excess and the chaos of values, critical thinking as a manifestation of cognitive self‐reliance and responsibility should become the competence characterizing each individual. Hence, the author formulates some recommendations concerning pedagogical practice. They are implied from the author’s concept of constructive criticism, the adopted the principles and methods supporting critical thinking.

Opis:
This article is an attempt to defend philosophy as a valuable theoretical reflection on the ultimate questions about the meaning of existence (especially human existence). In accordance with Leszek Kołakowski’s postulate, a philosopher could be modeled on a circus clown who observes the world from a distance and is capable of critiquing myths prevalent in the culture they grew up in. Although a clown does not provide final answers to ancient metaphysical questions, they make people reflect critically on their own beliefs. From this standpoint, philosophy is an integral element of every culture which does not wish to become ossified and stagnant due to its dogmatism.

Opis:
The paper contains a general characteristics of the relation between Lev Shestov’s philosophy of existence and transcendental phenomenology of Edmund Husserl. The analysis was largely inspired by Cezary Wodziński’s research on Shestov’s writings, including his book published in Polish Wiedza a zbawienie. Studium myśli Lwa Szestowa (1991). In 1931, inspired by Descartes’ Meditationes de prima philosophiae, Husserl began a total transformation of philosophy into a science absolutely founded, assumptionless and developed in the spirit of absolute self-responsibility. Thus, the idea of philosophy as an exact science and Descartes’ idea of a science absolutely founded became the aim. It resulted in a project of universal science which — according to Husserl — has been the aim of European philosophy from the beginning. Ultimately, this philosophy was to rebuild the whole model of European culture. Less than two years after the first edition of Die Krisis der europäischen Wissenchaften und die transzendentale Phänomenologie, Lev Shestov published his Athens and Jerusalem (1938) where he agrees with Husserl’s diagnosis that the whole European culture is in a stage of a deep crisis which goes to its very foundations. However, Shestov points at the radically different sources of that crisis. Paradoxically, a remarkable friendship connecting these two thinkers did not affect the similarity of their views. In fact, they are located at the opposite poles of the contemporary philosophical scene. The friendship of Shestov and Husserl was born in the atmosphere of an intense and uncompromising intellectual debate. Both thinkers are strongly convinced that the fate of European culture and European understanding what it is to be man are decided in the realm of philosophy. So, the philosophical projects they offer are two extremely critical visions of culture. At the same time they suggest a way the European culture should be thoroughly reformed at its very basis.

Opis:
The article examines the anonymously preserved prologue to Averroes’ De substantia orbis dating to the end of the 13th century (manuscript Munich, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek Clm 14246, ff. 16r–v, 19rb) and presents its edition. Along with commentaries by Fernand of Spain and Giles of Orléans (lost), this work is a rare witness of the still scarcely known commenting practice of Averroes’ work at the Faculty of Arts in Paris in this period. The codicological and paleographical examination conducted on the manuscript led to establishing the approximate dating and origin of the prologue. Additionally, the doctrinal analysis allowed us to place this opusculum within the context of other similar prologues and commentaries produced in this period. Of significant importance are similarities between the anonymous author and Fernand of Spain, whose prologue to his commentary on De substantia orbis provides an important context for the Anonymous Monacensis. Both works often employ the same examples and consider De substantia orbis the supplement to De caelo et mundo, which was an unusual addition to traditionally established divisio librorum naturalium.

Opis:
On the concept of culture and its sociologization. Ratio versus vis: The author argues against an absolutization of the sociological perspective and its anti‐cultural character. He criticizes the inadequacy of the sociological perspective in relation to the essence of culture, the purest form of which is art. The ideal of art, and its classic conceptualization in European culture, is based on a distinction of two opposite orders: the order of ratio, i.e. the idea, and the order of vis, i.e. force. The sociological approach to culture tends to reduce it to its competence, that is the order of social forces. The author’s critical remarks are provoked by the representative theory of culture, as it is exposed by Piotr Sztompka, the prominent Polish sociologist.
