- Strong, monovalent electrolyte changes are observed in all functional disorders of the adrenal cortex. Both hypercortisolism and hyperaldosteronism may lead to hypokalemia, hypernatremia, and corrected hypochloremia which is associated with hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis. Hypocortisolism and hypoaldosteronism are associated with hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, and corrected hyperchloremia, which is associated with hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis. It is worth to notice that uncorrected chloride concentration indicates hypochloremia in hypoadrenocorticism, which is in fact artifactual hypochloremia. In this review, electrolyte changes in functional disorders of the adrenal cortex in dogs andcats are described, and mechanisms of these changes are discussed.
