Pope Benedict XVI in his speech to the Roman Rota of 22/01/2011 talked about preparing for marriage. He pointed to his pastoral and legal nature. Benedict XVI said, that the immediate objective of this preparation was to promote the free celebration of a true marriage. This preparation the engaged couple are put in a position to discover the truth of a natural inclination and a capacity for committing themselves which they bear inscribed in their relational entity as man-woman. In this perspective particular care must be given to following through the preparation for marriage, whether it is remote preparation, proximate preparation or immediate preparation. Pope in his speech shows the importance of prematrimonial exam. Instead it is a unique pastoral opportunity — one to be made the most of with the full seriousness and attention that it requires. Judicial decisions must reflect the truth about the marriage. The preparation for marriage helps to discover this truth.

The indissoluble and fertile marriage is the proposal of God from the beginning of our story. This proposal is just the first thing, that God says to Adam and Eva. The Creator knows, that the fate of individual persons and the fate of the whole mankind depend from what happens between man and woman, and especially between husband and wife. The proposals in the postmodern society go in the other direction: “free” relationships, conflict between women and men ( feminism ) or promotion of the homosexual relationships. In this context the most important task of the catholic Church is on the one hand advancement of marriage and family and on the other hand solid preparation of fiancée for the sacrament of marriage. Formation of the young people that are able to love in faithful, generous and fertile way is the most important purpose and criterion of the education. It is also the first condition of the good future of the society and Church.

Pastors of the Church in Poland – inspired by the prophetic vision of the Blessed John Paul – made at the beginning of the third millennium, the completion of the task of the Church that was home for their children. This is the keynote of the three-year National Pastoral Programme at the beginning of the second decade of the twenty-first century. In building a community of the Church’s fundamental role of the sacraments. Of all the sacraments of the Church meet the important role of the so-called sacraments of healing, which is the sacrament of penance and reconciliation and the sacrament of anointing of the sick. They constitute an essential component of ecclesial identity. These are the sacraments in a special way responsible for designing and building the community of the Church. The publication shows that the penance and the anointing are clearly the ecclesial character. Therefore, the Christian faithful fulfillment of all obligations arising from the sacrament of penance and anointing of the leaven of the Gospel is, that makes the Church made present in a community of unity, love and peace. Through fidelity to his vocation and witness of life man reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance and the Sacrament of the Anointing of the adoption of strengthened contributes to the growth of the whole Church and to His holiness. Everything, therefore, what is important in the life of the Church and what gives it the true dimension and meaning, you can find in the sacrament of penance and anointing.

The present article discusses the question of 16th century evangelic reformed church rite, which was introduced in London by Jan Łaski. Particularly, we have analyzed one of its elements – the form of saying the Sacrament of Lord‟s Supper. The Polish reformator organizing the Reformed Church in England with the acceptance of Edward VI, focused mainly on liturgy in its broad meaning, articulating all of its elements which must find their place in the church. He did not omit the theological questions basing his claims on the authority of the Bible. His thoughts were written down on the pages of the greatest work of his life entitled “Forma i całkowity porządek kościelnego posługiwania”, which we have used as the source document. The Sacrament of Lord‟s Supper seems to be interesting in the way that in the Reformation times it caused inquisitive and heated discussions in the heart of the Protestantism itself. However, the denominational situation in the Republic of Poland in the mid 16th century that is the fatherland of the reformator did not allow him to come back to his homeland, which he desperately desired. He dedicated his work to the Polish King Zygmunt August, expressing his hopes that it would find the reach soil in Polish multidenominational movement. Łaski indicated in details how he understood the sacrament of the Supper, and also how it should be said in the churches. He theologically proved that Mass is not the repetition of the sacrifice, which was once made on the cross by Christ, therefore he strongly rejected the papists‟ teaching concerning transubstantiation. He also polemized lively in this field with the followers of Lutheran Reformation, who saw the „reality‟ in the Sacrament of the Altar and at the same time he expressed his respect towards the father of the Reformation – Martin Luther. His reformation idea „sola scriptura‟ is particularly conspicuous in his writing, as each element of the liturgy concerning the Supper had its confirmation in the Bible. Łaski worked out the whole ceremony of the liturgy for the foreign – reformed Church in England. He also described how the life of the believers should look like, and similarly to Calvin in Institutio, he worked out the organizational model of the Church defining, beside theological basis, the religious life of the congregation and the duties of the pastors.

Contemporary Rites put forward three forms of celebration of the sacrament of penance and reconciliation. The intention of Rites of penance in a renewed form was to demonstrate the nature and effect of the sacrament of penance more clearly and to show their social dimension. This is best expressed by the second way of celebration – the rite of reconciliation of many penitents with individual confession and absolution. It helps to understand better a social dimension of sin and forgiveness. In comparison to the first form – the rite of reconciliation of one penitent with individual confession and absolution – we can see how the same elements of penance which are expressed in analogues signs stress a social character of the sacrament. A communal form of the sacrament of penance seem to be underestimated and it is hard to speak about it common usage. Against a background of this reluctance and sometimes of some arbitrariness in the practice of communal penitential celebration we must stress the necessity of sacramental catechesis. Youth retreats are the opportunity to change this situation as during them this form of celebration is often applied. The Penitential Rites include nine models of penitential services and demonstrate their benefit and significance in their theological and pastoral aspects. One can observe a distinct analogy with the penitential rite for many penitents with individual confession and absolution although they are different in their nature. Youth retreats give opportunity to revive the practice of those services. It this case it is necessary to prepare the celebration well. It is particularly important to adapt the content (subjects) and form to recipients and, if possible, to involve the young in the co-creation of the celebration.

The sacrament of confirmation is an integral part of Christian initiation. It is not necessary for salvation but together with baptism and the Eucharist forms unity which is the foundation of life in Christ and which should be preserved. Historical and theological reasons confirm it and despite the interruption of chronological order of celebration, liturgical practice also supports this claim. Baptism is incorporation in Christ, in his Mystical Body, confirmation enhances the grace of baptism through the gift of the Holy Spirit, whereas the Eucharist completes and crowns the initiation giving food which is the pledge of eternal life. Facing disquieting phenomena of punctualistic understanding of confirmation in terms of both preparation and mystagogy, the author indicates the criteria of the unity of the sacraments of Christian initiation. In this context, confirmation is not the sacrament of Christian maturity but opening sacramental perspective offers indispensable means of achieving it.
Sakrament bierzmowania jest integralną częścią wtajemniczenia chrześcijańskiego. Nie jest konieczny do zbawienia, lecz razem z chrztem i Eucharystią tworzy jedność, która jest podstawą życia w Chrystusie i która powinna być zachowywana. Wskazują na to racje historyczne, teologiczne oraz, pomimo zerwania chronologicznej kolejności celebracji, także praktyka liturgiczna. Chrzest jest wszczepieniem w Chrystusa i Jego Mistyczne Ciało, bierzmowanie udoskonala łaskę chrztu przez dar Ducha Świętego, a Eucharystia dopełnia i wieńczy wtajemniczenie, udzielając pokarmu, który jest zadatkiem życia wiecznego. Wobec niepokojących zjawisk punktualistycznego rozumienia bierzmowania zarówno w przygotowaniu, jak i mistagogii, autor wskazuje na konkretne kryteria jedności sakramentów inicjacji chrześcijańskiej. Bierzmowanie w tym kontekście nie jest sakramentem dojrzałości chrześcijańskiej, ale, otwierając sakramentalną perspektywę, daje niezbędne środki do jej osiągnięcia.

However, there was a significant difference between the teachings of bishop Khomyshyn and archbishop Sheptytsky. Khomyshyn focused on theological aspects, while Sheptytsky mixed theology with politics.

The purpose of this paper was to show a justificatory aspect of the Eucharist. This sacrament has got positive and negative aspects. The Eucharist is a sacrament which leads to gradual justification through transformation of a whole human being into the resurrected Christ, which will be immortalized in the final kingdom in which the whole Christian life is included. This is a splendid synthesis of grace and cooperation of a human being, sacramental and ascetic life, liturgy and life, presence and future. The Eucharist continues the process of justification initiated by baptism. Therefore, it is a sacrament which in its repeatable character points out this healing effect of Christ on our nature, sick due to sin. The grace of justification is particularly received in the Eucharist. The sacrament of Baptism we take only once. We often receive the Eucharist because we often offend God. Looking for the grace of justification we are trying to expiate for our guilt, that is why we have to turn back and to overcome sin; those factors would not be effective in our fight against the sin, if we did not add the Eucharist, the only remedy for human evil.

The main object of this study is the baptismal Ordo of the Syro-Oriental liturgical tradition. The author, starting from the ancient sources, shows the phases of the development of the rite and of its theology. Referring to the Church Fathers like Ephrem and Narsai, he points that from ancient times the Church of the East has attached a special significance to the baptismal anointing. Indeed, in the case of this tradition the anointing is threefold: two times before the baptismal immersion and once following it. In this study a commentary of the patriarch Timothy II (1318–1332) was also presented, with some essential and original medieval ideas relating to the praxis and to the baptismal theology of the Church of the East. In the last part of the paper the author reflected on the contemporary Rite of the Baptism in the Church of the East.

In the last century the Church enabled priests to grant collective absolution mainly due to warfare. After the Second Vatican Council previously issued norms were collected and adapted to current needs. In the Code of Canon Law promulgated in 1983 in canons 961-963 there are binding norms regarding general absolution. The legislator limits the application of collective absolution to two main circumstances, namely the danger of death and the case of serious necessity. In the event of the danger of death the Church law allows for absolution after a prudent assessment of the situation by a confessor. On the other hand, the determination of the case of seriousness is on the side of the diocesan Bishop, who is to base his assessment of the situation on the criteria agreed with the other members of the Episcopal conference. The general absolution standards are to be interpreted strictly.

The purpose of the article is to share the reflection about the minister of the sacrament of confirmation in light of two binding liturgical books: the Pontifical “Ordo Confirmationis”, the Ritual “Ordo initiationis christianae adultorum” and the Code of Canon Law of 1983. The sacrament of confirmation is usually administered by the bishop, however he isn’t the only minister of this sacrament, since a presbyter may be authorised by the bishop to administer this sacrament as well. Although the Constitution “Lumen gentium”, no 26 defines bishops as appropriate ministers of confirmation (ministri originarii confirmationis) by introducing this new term to terminology, the legislator of the Code calls the bishop an ordinary minister (minister ordinarius), applying the term used in the Church since the church council in Florence. Most canonists share the opinion that the term “ordinary minister”, which is traditionally and historically justified, seems to be more capacious and comprises the church council term “minister originarius”. Here in turn the meaning of the latter one is emphasized by theologians, according to whom the church council by using this new term brings out the truth that the intervention of the bishop in the sacrament of confirmation is the extension of the event of Paschal Pentecost. In this perspective the person of bishop who administers the sacrament of confirmation becomes a connection with Pentecostal Church, a guarantee of Church unity. Due to his presence and service confirmands have stronger feeling of connection with their own diocese and with the universal Church. According to the binding doctrine and the law of universal Church, the sacrament of confirmation is administered legally by presbyters. In Roman Pontifical and in the Code of Canon Law of 1983 an extension of presbyters’ rights can be noticed in terms of administering the sacrament of confirmation in light of the rules which were previously binding.

At the beginning of the 13th century there was a crisis in the institutional Church, in response to which Pope Innocent III during the Fourth Lateran Council introduced the obligation of annual confession and emphasised the importance of this sacramental practice. The 21st Council Constitution obliged every believer to go to Confession at least once a year and to receive the Eucharist during the Easter season. This obligation applied to every baptised man and woman upon reaching the age of discernment, which the Council’s commentators at the time put at around seven years. Although, according to the medieval canonists, this obligation referred to confession of mortal sins, in practice all the faithful were encouraged to go to confession annually. The own parish priest had the duty to see that this commandment was fulfilled by the faithful entrusted to his pastoral care. In response to the serious obligation of the faithful, the Constitution Omnis utriusque sexus also imposed important duties on confessors. The confessor was to be prudent towards the confession of the penitent; he was compared to a doctor who must choose the treatment appropriate to the illness. Finally, the 21st Constitution of the Fourth Lateran Council emphasises the obligation of confessional secrecy on the part of the confessor and at the same time introduces severe penalties for a priest who breaks it. Many of the provisions described are still relevant in contemporary Church legislation. Even today, in the face of the Church’s crisis, it seems advisable to return to the fruitful celebration of the sacrament of Penance, which concerns both confessors and penitents.
Na początku XIII w. nastąpił kryzys Kościoła instytucjonalnego. Papież Innocenty III podczas Soboru Laterańskiego IV, w odpowiedzi na kryzys, wprowadził obowiązek corocznej spowiedzi i podkreślił znaczenie tej praktyki sakramentalnej. Konstytucja Omnis utriusque sexus zawierała zobowiązanie każdego wiernego do spowiedzi przynajmniej raz w roku oraz do przyjmowania Eucharystii w okresie wielkanocnym. Obowiązek ten dotyczył każdego ochrzczonego mężczyzny i kobiety po osiągnięciu wieku rozeznania, który ówcześni komentatorzy Soboru określali na około siedem lat. Choć według średniowiecznych kanonistów obowiązek ten odnosił się do spowiedzi z grzechów śmiertelnych, w praktyce wszyscy wierni byli zachęcani do corocznej spowiedzi. Własny proboszcz miał obowiązek dopilnować wypełnienia tego przykazania przez wiernych powierzonych jego duszpasterskiej pieczy. W odpowiedzi na poważne zobowiązanie wiernych Konstytucja Omnis utriusque sexus nakładała istotne obowiązki także na spowiedników. Spowiednik miał być roztropny wobec spowiedzi penitenta, był porównywany do lekarza, który musi wybrać leczenie odpowiednie dla danej choroby. Wreszcie 21 Konstytucja Soboru Laterańskiego IV podkreśla obowiązek zachowania tajemnicy spowiedzi ze strony spowiednika i jednocześnie wprowadza surowe kary dla kapłana, który ją złamie. Wiele z opisanych przepisów jest nadal aktualnych we współczesnym ustawodawstwie kościelnym. Również dzisiaj, w obliczu kryzysu Kościoła, wydaje się wskazane, aby powrócić do owocnego sprawowania sakramentu pokty, co dotyczy zarówno spowiedników, jak i penitentów.

Opis:
The article ”The history and theology of a baptismal bowl” shows the way in which the form of baptizing had an influence on the evolution of shape and size of a baptismal bowl. It also describes theological meaning of a baptismal bowl in the context of analysing the rituals of liturgy of baptism, which was renewed after the Second Vatican Council. In terms of Ritual and Ceremonies of Blessing a baptismal bowl is a real baptismal source. Mention should be made of the fact that it is necessary to tell the difference between a baptistery which means a separated building outside the church and chapel, which is situated in church, or another place in a church building. This place is created only for giving the sacrament of holy baptism. Not all the parishes can have a special baptistery, but all of them must have a baptismal bowl (the baptismal source) where the sacrament of holy baptism is given. In post-conciliar liturgical books the baptismal bowl is called the source of salvation or a gate of spiritual life of Christ, or a kind of her womb thanks to which people are born to a new life through water and Holy Spirit. In the renewed liturgy, which emphasizes the Paschal character of the sacrament of holy baptism, a baptismal bowl appears as a place of transition from death to life, because the ones who are born in this world are infected by the dirt of original sin, then washed in it by streams of baptismal water they are incorporated in Christ. In this way they regain their original purity and impeccability and their souls are fertilized by the riches of virtues. The baptismal source can be also described as a place of reaching divine alliance, because baptism is the first sacrament of New Alliance in which people experience ontic relationship with Christ and are united with His Body. In this meaning a baptismal bowl in post-conciliar liturgy appears as locus theologicus, since apart from the pulpit and the altar it creates historical-saving triad in the architecture of faith, and its design and artistry can become the source of deep theological reflections.

Opis:
Referring to the biblical truth about the creation of mankind brings about an exciting understanding of marriage, its sense and objective. Creating man in his own image, God created them as man and woman, and then he gave them a command to be fruitful and multiply and to subdue the Earth (Gen 1:27–28). Pope Leo XIII wrote: “in marriage there is something sanctified and religious, not added but innate, not received from people but rooted in the nature”. The divine origin of marriage means that it is not a purely human institution which is governed by the principles from this world or by individual human desires. It is God’s design. As God is the creator of marriage, man cannot ignore it. In this article we would like to look at God’s design for marriage, which is the contents of the teaching of the Church and her shepherds. In particular we would like to focus on the statements which present the place and role of love in marriage.

Opis:
The issue was discussed primarily on the grounds of the legal acts and documents of the Magisterium and the legislation of the Republic of Poland. Additionally, there were presented theological and canonical views, as well as those referring to the doctrine of the Polish law. At first, the theological and canonical aspect of the Sacrament of Penance was presented within the said issue. Then, there were discussed problems relating to the protection of the sanctity of the Sacrament of Penance on the basis of the canon law. With this respect, the essence of the mystery and secrecy of confession was explained in the beginning, then there were shown forms of its infringement. Furthermore, we presented crimes which might be committed in the administration and reception of the Sacrament of Penance and canonical sanctions resulting from such commission. In the context of the presented issue, it was also essential to emphasize the protection of secrecy of confession in the Polish law, particularly on the grounds of the Polish procedural law, mainly with respect to the existing inadmissibility of evidence relating to information received under the seal of confession in the criminal, civil and administrative procedures. The paper also addressed the possibility of taking a legal responsibility before Church Court for violating the seal of confession in the Polish law.
