Opis:
The article concerns religiousness of city dwellers, their attitudes towards the Catholic Church. The author –on the basis of her own empirical research-shows different types of Christians. Research proves there is a big diversity of religiousness among Polish Christians. It shows that in structures of the Church (regarded as the community of the faithful) there are not only believers, but also religiously indifferent and non-believers, practising and non-practising, critical of the Church and sympathetic towards this institution.

Opis:
Syncretism is the combining of different beliefs, often while melding practices of various schools of thought. Syncretism may involve the merger and analogising of several originally discrete traditions, especially in the theology and mythology of religion, thus asserting an underlying unity and allowing for an inclusive approach to other faiths. Religious syncretism exhibits blending of two or more religious belief systems into a new system, or the incorporation into a religious tradition of beliefs from unrelated traditions. This can occur for many reasons, and the latter scenario happens quite commonly in areas where multiple religious traditions exist in proximity and function actively in the culture, or when a culture is conquered, and the conquerors bring their religious beliefs with them, but do not succeed in entirely eradicating the old beliefs or, especially, practices. One can contrast Christian syncretism with contextualization or inculturation, the practice of making Christianity relevant to a culture: Contextualisation does not address the doctrine but affects a change in the styles or expression of worship. In this view, syncretism implies compromising the message of Christianity by merging it with not just a culture, but another religion.

Opis:
The tragedy of contemporary times lies not only in the lack of faith in God, but also in the invasion of false spirituality. God, the Creator, is replaced with idols, His substitutes. The feeling of spiritual disorientation prevalent today stems from the loss of awareness of essential identity of God. That is why it is worth examining the long-prevailing spiritual threat of practising superstitions, still widespread today. The present paper aims to examine this phenomenon in the light of the current state of knowledge in the fields of history, religious science, psychology and pastoral theology. According to the etymological definition of the word, superstition means idolatrous worship, or the cult of false gods (Lat. Superstitio, Gr. Deisidaimonia). Among many definitions in circulation, the most pertinent one adopted for the purpose of this paper is that superstition is an irrational and feardriven disposition towards impersonal powers, that verges on religious experience, although, simultaneously, is contrary to religion. Superstition relates to a false faith, i.e. beliefs and practices at variance with Christian religion. The present paper discusses some of superstitious practices and attempts to answer the following questions: What is the difference between religion and superstition? What are the underlying historical sources, contexts and conditions for the persistence of superstitious beliefs and practices? Can a notion of „a superstition” from a religious and theological perspective be retained as sensible and useful? Is there a connection between superstitions and rural folk religiosity? The paper also provides an outline of theological assessment of superstitious mindset and practices and gives some pastoral guidelines for the shaping of mature and critical religious attitude, free from superstitions.

In this article the author focuses on the state and differentiation of Polish religiosity in Great Britain. For this purpose the author applies several religiosity indicators, such as: participation in Sunday Mass, need to get in touch with a Polish priest and need to educate children in the Catholic faith. Of course the author realizes those three indicators do not constitute a full picture of religiosity of Polish migrants in Great Britain, however, the intention of the author is to show religiosity as a strong factor which affects socio-cultural identity of Polish migrants in Great Britain. The analysis of this research shows the role of religion in shaping migrants’ identities through demonstrations, practices and experiences.

Opis:
The national and religious identity of Polish minority in the north-eastern Ukraine for centuries has been shaped under the influence of different factors than in the western part of the country. The problem of self-identification of homo postsovieticus is strongly linked with the idea of multiculturalism and a conscious choice of ethnicity. Poles from the Zaporozhye Priazovye have lived thousands kilometres away from the Motherland in a multicultural society consisting of over 130 nationalities. In order to understand how the Polish minority identity from the Zaporozhye Priazovye has been shaped it is important to learn about the history of the Roman Catholic Church in that region. The article presents the history of the above-mentioned Polish minority via the history of the churches in Dnipro, Kamianske, and Zaporizhia. The image of a Catholic Pole in reference to the Polish minority often turns out to be ambiguous, because for a long time the development of religion in those regions was impossible.

Opis:
The concept of transnationalism created by Nina Glick Schiller, Linda Basch and Cristina Szanton-Blanc seems to be useful to present the importance of the Internet for Polish missionaries in Belarus. They define transnationality as multiple relationships which are established by immigrants with the country of origin and the host country. This is particularly evident on the example of new media. Four types of transnational relations can be distinguished: political, economic, social and cultural ones. Currently in Belarus there is a population of nearly 1.5 million Catholics, of which over 60% is considered to be Polish. Some of them are the so-called church Poles. This creates a specific cultural situation of Catholics, which is reflected even in the materials posted on the Internet. Catholicism is linked with Poland, especially with Polish language. Bilingual and transnational activity of the church is visible on the website. However, not all information appears in the two languages. Observing the presence of Polish missionaries on the Internet, we can distinguish three levels: informational, communication and economic. For that reason they use different tools: portals, blogs, pages and instant messaging services, establishing contact with parishioners and friends in the host country and abroad. They are both senders and recipients. Thanks to new media it is possible to reconcile their belonging to different countries, so it can be said that priests have a hybrid identity, in this case Polish and Belarusian. Thanks to websites priests can inform about current events, investments, hours of services, send Christmas wishes or call for support. On the level of communication the internet is undoubtedly an important medium supporting missionaries’ contacts, but not the most important one. Still a telephone prevails as the most reliable and quite direct solution - unfortunately a payable one. The Internet is also used as a tool for raising funds for the church. Priests on the websites inform readers about their activities and ask for donations. This results in financial dependence of the church in the East. Currently both Poles and Belarusians need a visa to cross the Polish-Belarusian border. This means that a state permit is required to take actions in those two nations. In this situation the internet is an effective medium of particular importance as it surpasses state and economic restrictions.

The aim of this article is to present the results of our own survey in the field of religious socialization, which are a part of broader research issues on how religious sanctity is understood and located in one’s religious awareness; we researched the perception and evaluation of holy life, of people who are considered saints and possible desire to follow them in their own life by high school graduates. Studies were carried out in 2010 on a representative sample of 1841 high school graduates living and studying in Lublin Voivodeship. For the purpose of this article, we have divided the issues regarding education and teaching religious principles into three parts: the first part covers respondents’ statements about “religious atmosphere” in the family as demonstrated by discussions on religious topics in their families; the second part includes young people’s opinions about religious education; in the third part teachers speak about the presence of religious education at school and its role in shaping the students’ worldview.
