The text is an attempt to read the Leo XIII’s encyclical “Rerum Novarum” (1891) in the context of Catholic entrepreneurship. The author proposes three theses in the article. Firstly, Max Weber’s view that Protestant ethics promotes the development of entrepreneurship better than the Catholic one was popularized in the literature. Secondly, the doctrine of the Catholic Church provides a lot of inspirations for carrying out an effective social and economic activity. Thirdly, the encyclical “Rerum Novarum” was the reference point for the Catholic entrepreneurship already at the end of the 19th century. The considerations are supplemented by some references to the history of social and economic thought and German economic history in the 20th century.

The issue of apostolic succession is one of the subjects of ecumenical dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Polish-Catholic Church in the Republic of Poland. Thanks to studies conducted in this area, it is possible to ascertain the preservation in the Polish-Catholic Church of the historical succession, originating through the Churches of the Union of Utrecht from the Roman Catholic Church. A difference, howewer, is the approach of the two communities to the succession of the episcopal ministry outside the community of the Church. The Old Catholic Churches, and hence the polish-catholics, do not recognise the validity of episcopal ordinations conferred outside the ecclesial community and without a specific mandate to confer them, even if the proper rite of conferral has been observed. The Roman Catholic Church, while regarding the conferral and reception of episcopal orders without papal nomination as giving rise to excommunication, nevertheless recognises their sacramental effect if the substance, form and proper intention of the conferral have been preserved.

The author has attempted to answer the following question: what role negativity plays as a criterion for the selection of information and what role it plays in shaping public opinion about the Catholic Church and whether this message, in which there is reference to something negative, favors the use of negative frame by press authors. The background of the analysis is the premiere of Wojciech Smarzowski’s film “Kler”. The research was aimed at determining the correlation between the presence of the category of negativism in the events of the public agenda and the manner of assigning news to the negative interpretation framework. The research material consists of press articles regarding the identity and activity of the Catholic Church, which have been published in the following national weekly opinion weeklies: “Newsweek Polska”, “Polityka”, “Do Rzeczy”, “Sieci” in the period 1.10–15.11.2018. The author uses press content analysis method and the synthesis and analysis method.

Opis:
On the threshold of the outbreak of the First World War Łódź was one of the biggest industrial centers of the Russian Empire. In 1911 512,5 thousand of people lived there including 267.1 thousand Catholics. For many decades of the second half of the 19th century the Catholics, who amounted to over 160 thousand by the end of the century, had only two parish churches: the church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and a filial St. Joseph church. In the period just before the outbreak of the war Łódź was not only a great workshop but also a great construction site. In this period five churches and Catholic chapels were erected or their construction was started. This construction work was stopped for the war period. The article presents the history of those constructions and the efforts preceding them.

The national and religious identity of Polish minority in the north-eastern Ukraine for centuries has been shaped under the influence of different factors than in the western part of the country. The problem of self-identification of homo postsovieticus is strongly linked with the idea of multiculturalism and a conscious choice of ethnicity. Poles from the Zaporozhye Priazovye have lived thousands kilometres away from the Motherland in a multicultural society consisting of over 130 nationalities. In order to understand how the Polish minority identity from the Zaporozhye Priazovye has been shaped it is important to learn about the history of the Roman Catholic Church in that region. The article presents the history of the above-mentioned Polish minority via the history of the churches in Dnipro, Kamianske, and Zaporizhia. The image of a Catholic Pole in reference to the Polish minority often turns out to be ambiguous, because for a long time the development of religion in those regions was impossible.

This reflection has a character of basic research. Its aim is to look synthetically at the way the Church carries out her mission in the area of public media, which was made possible by the Act of 1992. It is important to grasp a wider context in this process. This is an attempt to present how and to what degree the Church managed to fill the public TV and radio with religious contents. It seems that the results of this research and considerations may become an impulse for further deeper and more systematic classification and assessment of the richness of religious contents in public media since 1989 up till now.

The aim of the paper is an attempt to define the image of the Catholic charity Caritas of the Archdiocese of Lodz. The author used the method of press content analysis (quantitative and qualitative methods of research) and hermeneutical method. The research material was published on the websites of regional press “Express Ilustrowany” and “Dziennik Łódzki”. The author of the analysis paid special attention to how the charity work of Caritas of the Archdiocese of Lodz in the years 2015–2016 was presented.

The issue of the “political turn” in the context of religious-pedagogical reflection in Poland should be considered – in some sense – as “absent discourse”. Despite this, one of the leading tasks of the Catholic Church, and thus of religious education in Polish schools, is to shape believers so, that they are not only good Christians, but also citizens, aware of their rights and obligations. Based on this assumption, in the first step of the theoretical analysis, the relations between the Church itself and politics were presented. Then, the “broadened” and at the same time pro-democratic horizon of the religion lesson was outlined. Finally, the religious and pedagogical perspectives were presented, not only directly related to the political dimension of religious education in Poland, but also challenging it in terms of content, structure and concept.

The concept of transnationalism created by Nina Glick Schiller, Linda Basch and Cristina Szanton-Blanc seems to be useful to present the importance of the Internet for Polish missionaries in Belarus. They define transnationality as multiple relationships which are established by immigrants with the country of origin and the host country. This is particularly evident on the example of new media. Four types of transnational relations can be distinguished: political, economic, social and cultural ones. Currently in Belarus there is a population of nearly 1.5 million Catholics, of which over 60% is considered to be Polish. Some of them are the so-called church Poles. This creates a specific cultural situation of Catholics, which is reflected even in the materials posted on the Internet. Catholicism is linked with Poland, especially with Polish language. Bilingual and transnational activity of the church is visible on the website. However, not all information appears in the two languages. Observing the presence of Polish missionaries on the Internet, we can distinguish three levels: informational, communication and economic. For that reason they use different tools: portals, blogs, pages and instant messaging services, establishing contact with parishioners and friends in the host country and abroad. They are both senders and recipients. Thanks to new media it is possible to reconcile their belonging to different countries, so it can be said that priests have a hybrid identity, in this case Polish and Belarusian. Thanks to websites priests can inform about current events, investments, hours of services, send Christmas wishes or call for support. On the level of communication the internet is undoubtedly an important medium supporting missionaries’ contacts, but not the most important one. Still a telephone prevails as the most reliable and quite direct solution - unfortunately a payable one. The Internet is also used as a tool for raising funds for the church. Priests on the websites inform readers about their activities and ask for donations. This results in financial dependence of the church in the East. Currently both Poles and Belarusians need a visa to cross the Polish-Belarusian border. This means that a state permit is required to take actions in those two nations. In this situation the internet is an effective medium of particular importance as it surpasses state and economic restrictions.

The article contains the analysis of the results of research on information policy implemented by priests in Roman Catholic parishes in the diocese of Rzeszów. The research was carried out from June to September 2018. It was conducted on the basis of anonymous questionnaire interviews. The research group consisted of 85 priests. The aim of the research is to analyze the application of information policy tools in the parishes of Rzeszów diocese and to check how priests define the concept of information policy, as well as what kind of tools they use to communicate with the faithful and which of them are preferred by their parishioners. Moreover, the author wanted to find out if they see the need for educational activities in the field of communication.

Proclaiming the Gospel to the whole world, and as part of this, caring for people, caring for the faithful, is one of the basic tasks of the Church; it is carried out through pastoral care in individual parishes. It is the parish which forms the center of religious, liturgical, and sacramental life for the Christian. This article provides a source knowledge on various aspects of sacramental service and is also a reflection on this problem. The article presents the sacraments, which form the center of religious life and are the source of initiation and deepening in the Faith, uniting one to Christ and to the whole community, and especially for Polish immigrants, a bond which spiritually connects them to their homeland. For that reason, the whole sacramental life of the Polish community in Hamburg is presented here, taking into account concrete numerical data and also the meaning of these sacred signs in the lives of the faithful. The sacraments, although they sanctify the most important moments of human life and are irreplaceable, do not fulfill (?) all the spiritual needs of the People of God. Therefore, the conclusion presents other aspects of man’s sanctification on the basis of selected sacramentals.

This paper is a historical reflection concerning the origins of the statehood of Poland. The author refers to a number of scientific studies and shows the meaning of baptism for the unity of the State of Mieszko I. It can be said that in the history there is no pre-Christian Poland, because it is this religion which became the bond of national identity of Polish people. In his study the author pointed out political sensitivity of the first sovereign of Poland. However, the decision to adopt the Christian religion was probably not motivated by political calculations but was the result of the personal conversion of the prince of the Western Polans. This statement seems to be rooted not only in the written sources but also in the non-verbal national tradition, expressed – for example – in some eminent artistic works. The author emphasizes that Christian Poland from the very beginning was distinguished from its neighbours by three essential elements: catholicity, republicanism and latinism. Those elements ensured that Christian universalism became one of the main characteristics of Poland. In the last part of the study the author focuses on mutual relations between the Church and Polish statehood and on the role which the Catholic faith played in the maintenance of the Polish national identity.
