Opis:
English yew (Taxus baccata L.) is a rare tree species in Austria and gene conservation forests reserves are used to maintain English yew populations by silvicultural treatments. This paper describes the current situation of an English yew population at “Stiwollgraben”in Austria with regard to stand structure, vitality and natural regeneration. The area is one of the most important sites in Austria as it consists of 2236 yews. The vitality condition of the yew is very good, and more than 79% of the yews have been assessed as very vital to vital. The potentiality for natural regeneration (13019 one-year seedlings ha–1) is very high, but not all height classes are represented. This indicates a high survival ability of English yew at this site. Three different treatment strategies are described to maintain the yew population. The future effects of these treatments are discussed in the light of the environmental requirements of English yew.

Opis:
European yew (Taxus baccata L.) is a rare species, but is the focus of great interest because of the species recovery attempts and its use in medicine. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum conditions for the development of the young generation of this species. Four-year old yew seedlings were grown under artificial light reduction: 2, 8, and 30%, as well as in full light. The seedlings were then planted in natural conditions in fenced and unfenced areas. The results of six years field studies indicated that the greatest impact on survival was shown by the light conditions from the period before planting under the canopy of trees. Seedlings from the 2 and 8% of light showed the greatest mortality. The reason was the sudden change in light conditions, because at the time of planting (early spring), there was no reduction of light under deciduous trees. Almost all of the unfenced yew seedlings were grazed by deer, but yew survival in the unfenced group was surprisingly high despite the permanent grazing. This was explained by the high resistance of yew to cutting and the protection of seedlings by a dense layer of Rubus. The results indicated that yew trees require protection against animals for normal development, even if animals have not previously had contact with Taxus and that yew seedlings are very sensitive to sudden changes in light. Both conclusions can be applied in the development of natural and artificial regeneration of European yew and other endangered plants.

The aim of the investigations was determination the reasons of dying down of needles and branches of common yew (Taxus baccata L.) in the park collection of Botanic Garden of Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The disease changes of infectious nature were observed on the examined plants’ parts. The changes’appearance, its location and extent were described in details. At fi rst the spots were brown colour with distinct hem. Then the needle and branch tissues were dying down. From end of May to July mass falling down of infesteted needles was observed. Mycological analysis of diseased tissues showed 34 fungi species. To the dominant species belonged: Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium spp., Pestalotiopsis guepinii, Phomopsis juniperivora and Zythiostroma pinastri. Common yew pathogens: Phomopsis juniperivora and Sclerophoma pityophila were found among the isolated fungi.
Badania miały na celu określenie przyczyn zamierania igieł i gałązek cisa pospolitego (Taxus baccata L.) w kolekcji Ogrodu Botanicznego UJ w Krakowie. Na badanych częściach roślin występowały zmiany chorobowe o charakterze infekcyjnym. Opisywano szczegółowo ich wygląd, zlokalizowanie i zasięg. Początkowo były to plamy brązowawo zabarwione z wyraźną obwódką. Następnie tkanki igieł i gałązek zamierały. Obserwowano też masowe opadanie porażonych igieł w okresie od końca maja do lipca. Przeprowadzona analiza mikologiczna chorych tkanek wykazała w nich obecność 34 gatunków grzybów, wśród których dominowały: Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium spp., Pestalotiopsis guepinii, Phomopsis juniperivora oraz Zythiostroma pinastri. W populacji wyizolowanych grzybów stwierdzono obecność patogenów cisa pospolitego, tj.: Phomopsis juniperivora i Sclerophoma pityophila.

Archaeological research in the crypts of the Church of the Holy Name of the Virgin Mary in Szczuczyn has been carried out since 2012. Many years of research have made it possible to identify some of the buried people, including the Piarists who served as the hosts of the church. One of the monks identified was Stanislaw Marszycki, who took the name Simeon of St Joseph after his monastic vows. Identification of the Piarist was possible thanks to the information on the coffin. On the deceased’s vestments rested a wooden crucifix, which can be interpreted as part of the deceased’s individual equipment. The crucifix was subjected to wood species identification using a microscope with transmitted light. This made it possible to determine that it was made from the wood of the common yew tree (Taxus baccata L.). Yew wood is a valuable material and was used to make both large boatbuilding components, furniture, and weapons, and was also readily used in 18th-century gardens. The yew was also a tree around which there was a great deal of superstition. Because of its toxicity and longevity, it was treated as both a tree of death and life. The cross from the monk’s coffin, according to superstition, might have guarded the deceased against evil, been an individual object with which the deceased was associated, or perhaps was chosen because yew wood was eminently polishable and with a beautiful colouration.

The paper presents technology of aerotriangulation on the basis of multitemporal (1951, 1964, 1975, and 1984), aerial photos of the Słowinski National Park in various scale Those photos, as negatives, were obtained from the resources of military geographic authorities Military Geography Management in Warsaw. The quality of photos in particular year was highly diversified. Therefore, methods of digital image processing, such as filtration, "image reinforcement", or preliminary tonal balancing were applied to improve the quality of those photogrammetric materials, and to improve the possibilities of their photointerpretation. The DEPHOS photogrammetric station was used to perform measurements, necessary for adjustment of the aerotriangulation block. In the first stage, internal and relative orientations were performed for all photo blocks. Due to the specificity of the Park area, the measurement of binding points was substantially hindered (more than 70% of the photo block being processed are occupied by migrating dunes, the Baltic Sea, and the Łebsko and the Gardno lakes). In view of the lack of the possibility to balance the aerotriangulation block under the DEPHOS system, the process was performed in ImageStation environment. It was necessary to transform data from the Dephos format (pixel coordinates of binding points on particular photos) to the ImageStation format. The quality of photos directly affected the accuracy of measurements, both in relation to binding points, and to photopoints, as well as the interpretation of terrain details in the later process of DTM generation. The said research works were conducted under the research project No. N304 077 31/3060 [financed by the State Committee for Scientific Research and] titled "Spatial Modelling of Changes in Selected Elements of the Słowinski National Park. " DTM was the basis for spatial and time analyses of the Słowinski National Park landscape, which is marked by its exceptionally strong dynamics of substrate and vegetation.

Opis:
Taxus baccata L. is a rare and endangered dioecious species in Europe. Species of this mating system are considered to be the most vulnerable to extinction. It is believed that one reason for this state may be the uneven reproductive effort and different habitat requirements of the two sexes. Silver fir and European yew have very similar ecological requirements, but fir is a monoecious species. The aim of this study was to compare the growth rate andthe effect of precipitation andtemperature on the annual tree-ring width of silver fir and both sexes of European yew. The study site was the Knyazhdvir reserve in western Ukraine, located near the limit of the geographical range of both species. Knyazhdvir reserve is the site of one of the last yew populations in Europe with a large number of individuals (about 15,000 individuals above 1.3 m height) growing alongside fir.Woodsamples were taken from 15 male and15 female specimens of T. baccata andfrom 15 specimens of A. alba and were subjected to a standard dendrochronological procedure. The results showed high positive correlation between the temperatures in February andMarch andthe tree-ring width in the studied species and genders. The response of annual tree-ring width to the examined climatic factors was relatively similar in yew andfir. However slight differences were foundbetween males andfemales of T. baccata. The growth rate decreased more rapidly in females compared to males, probably following sexual maturation. Precipitation in April hada positive effect on firs andfemale yews, but not on male yews. This confirms earlier reports of the requirement of female specimens of dioecious species for a higher humidity than male individuals.

Badania populacji cisa przeprowadzono w latach 2010‒2011 w Wysokiej Lelowskiej niedaleko wsi Żarki Letnisko i Przybynów. Wyznaczono 4 poletka badawcze o wymiarach 10 × 20 m. Średnia grubość wynosi 7.27 cm, a średnia wysokość wszystkich osobników to 6.98 m.
The research of yew population was carried out in the years 2010‒2011 in Wysoka Lelowska near villages Żarki Letnisko and Przybynów. 4 research plots were established, 10 × 20 meters in dimension. For each research plot, all species was marked and the floristic list was made. The phytosociologial analysis was made in terms of spring and summer. On this basis was stated that the plant community is a degenerated form of Fraxino-Alnetum. The yew population consist of 71 specimens were measured in terms of height and breast height. Breast height of yews ranged between 1 and 29 cm. The average diameter is 7.27 cm and the average height of all specimens is 6.98 m. The tallest yew has reached 13.3 m in height. Most of the yews are branched (59%) and had 5, 3, 2 trunks. 38% population have a monopodium. Two specimens (3%) had a shrubby form. The average density of yews on all plots is 8.8/100 m2. Sex identity was determined in 97% of yews population: 62% were male and 33% female specimens. Despite, that the presence of the female specimens population in Wysoka Lelowska is not regeneration. The seedlings were found in the amount 6 of up to 10 cm. Maybe for reason the yews are not regeneration is over-developed undergrowth. Due to the large number of yews and good condition this population should be protected in nature reserve.

Opis:
Taxus baccata L. is a relict plant and has a scattered distribution in the entire species range. Yew regeneration may be affected by moisture conditions and tree stand characteristics – variables which change over time and which have not been sufficiently researched to date. The present study determined the size structure of yews, causes of yew mortality, the effects of tree stand characteristics and habitat conditions on yew diameter increment at breast height, the density of yew seedlings and saplings, and the likelihood of yew seedling occurrence. The study was conducted in central Poland, on 22 permanent sampling plots. The paper presents data col- lected in 2017 with reference to previous studies on these plots from 2001 and 2007. Stand volume, basal area, number of trees, canopy cover, and type of forest site were established for the tree layer. Saplings and shrubs were counted. Finally, the parameters determined for yew seedlings included density and percentage of individuals damaged by browsing, as well as soil moisture and percentage cover of herbaceous vegetation in the nearest neighborhood. In 2017, yew density in the tree layer was 70 individuals/ha, having increased by 15 individuals/ha over 16 years. During that period, 6.4 individuals/ha died in that layer. The predominant cause of yew mortality was wind. In the period 2007–2017, the mean diameter increment at breast height was 2.2 mm/year, and indicated a weak relationship only with tree diameter at the beginning of the studied period (R2 = 0.06). In 2017, the mean density of yew saplings and seedlings was 55 individuals/ha and 1005 individuals/ha, re- spectively. Two independent variables were found to be significant in the model of yew seedling occurrence: presence of mature yews on the sampling plot and soil moisture. The condition of the studied yew population is satisfactory, especially in the less moist areas. The number of seedlings is acceptable, but more active protection should be considered due to the scarcity of yew sap- lings. This is all the more important as seed-producing mature yews tend to die as a result of exposure to strong winds and periodic local flooding.

English yew is one of the most endangered species in Europe. Due to the specificity of this species, its natural regeneration is quite difficult. The aim of the study was to present the current situation of distribution, protection and restoration of the species in Ukraine. The study presents some characteristics of largest natural and artificial yew populations in the country and their protection. In situ and ex situ yew populations are quite different, in terms of bioclimatic conditions what does not affect to the growth characteristics of the populations. In addition, the activities related to the natural and artificial renaturalisation of the yew were analysed. Thus, tending of tree stands, where the natural regeneration of yew was inventoried can be recommended but it should be planned very individually regarding requirements of the site. The introduction of yew seedlings in the conditions of the managed forest is very difficult. Despite the complication of obtaining planting material and high cost, it is important measure to preserve the species. In Ukraine are successful examples of the seed transfer of yew populations by about 450 km in North-East direction (Carpathian yew population) and 700 km in North direction (Crimean yew population). It is an evidence of high ecological plasticity of the species. Moreover, some recommendations that could be useful for increasing the popularization of this species throughout the country were given in conclusions. The wider use of yew in public areas across the country due to unique value of species and more convenient protection of young seedlings. It is worth to continue the inventory of yew locations at the national level and study the possibilities to use as local sources to conservation of this species throughout the country.

Using a long-term experimental area with two different light conditions as an example, the authors define growth conditions and present their research based on 27 years of analyses of English yew (Taxus baccata). The results on English yew growing in different light conditions, suggest that not only health status and the ability of aril production but also the growth of the analysed yew population under well-lit conditions are significantly higher, compared to yew grown under cover. The latter variant exhibits a relatively high tolerance for shade, however, this comes at the expense of a much poorer health status. In contrast, English yew in well-lit conditions indicates that, for optimal development, it requires more light.

Opis:
Taxus baccata L. has a scattered distribution and the decline of yew woodlands is observed across the entire species range. Passively protected populations in the central and northern part of their distribution are declining without human intervention. However, the establishment of new yew populations is observed in habitats that have been significantly transformed by humans. The following question need to be answered: why do yews find better in environmental conditions that have been strongly modified by humans compared to natural systems? The Quaternary history might be the key to understand the current yew situation. As suggested by palaeobotanical studies, pollen of T. baccata was observed at optima of the interglacials, but in subsequent periods, it has been displaced by that of other shade-tolerant species. Pollen diagrams indicate that after the last glaciation, the yew did not appear earlier than other shade-tolerant species and did not have the opportunity to become common in occurrence, as in previous interglacial periods. As a result, yews occur only as relict populations within environmental islands where the competition with other shade-tolerant species is low. The negative human impact on yew is well-documented, but limitations resulting from the biology of this species are also very important. T. baccata is a species whose current scattered distribution may explain the Quaternary history. Yew situation is better in artificial conditions because people reduce competition from other trees species and deer pressure. Possible positive impact of human on yew distribution in the past is also discussed. The current biological condition of this species suggests the need for active protection.

Opis:
Wyniki przedstawiono w postaci przekrojów poziomego i pionowego.
Between 1957-1958, elaborate research was conducted in the Leon Wyczolkowski Nature Reserve of Old Polish Yews, Wierzchlas. The objective of the study was to document the current condition of forest associations, and to provide the image of the stand’s spatial 3D structure. A profile was established in a form of a long and narrow strip. Both, the location and dimensions of every tree and shrub were registered inside. Collected data were presented in a form of vertical and horizontal cross-sections of the forest stand. Seven years later (in 1964), the aerial survey was performed there, from which the black & white photographs were found. We decided to check whether it would be possible to use them to reconstruct the spatial structure of nature reserve’s forest. For this purpose, a Video-Stereo-Digitizer and a digital photogrammetric station were used. The study proved close similarity between the forest structure registered photogrammetrically and that registered by field survey. The profiles compared matched also each other well. With the photogrammetric measurements, it is also possible to perform a reliable analysis of natural processes in the entire area of this nature reserve and its surroundings
