Opis:
Leaf spot disease on the spider lily [Hymenocallis littoralis (Jacq.) Salisb.] continues to cause serious problems in China. To confirm the pathogen, the pathogenicity of isolates from diseased leaves was tested according to Koch’s postulates. The isolates were tentatively identified using morphological characteristics and confirmation was done by phylogenetic analysis of the translation elongation factor 1-alpha gene (TEF1), the actin gene (ACT), and internal transcibed spacer (ITS) sequences using neighbor-joining (NJ), maximum parsimony (MP), and Bayesian inference (BI) methods. The pathogen was identified as Phyllosticta hostae. Molecular analysis indicated very little diversity in the TEF1, ACT, and ITS gene. This is the first report of P. hostae causing leaf spot disease on spider lily in China.

Opis:
Our present study was aimed to detect the medicinal uses of the plant Murraya koenigii (L) Spreng belonging to the family Rutaceae by performing various studies such as Pharmacognostical, phytochemical and antibacterial activity, using seven different bacterial strains, which are harmful to human beings. The Murraya koenigii commonly known as “Curry leaf“ has been recognized in different systems of traditional medicines for the treatment of different diseases and ailments of human beings. The leaves of the plant are said to be cooling and stomachache. The study includes macroscopy, microscopy, preliminary phytochemical screening and antibacterial evaluation.

Opis:
The genus Eulophia embraces over 230 species distributed through the tropical and subtropical Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas. In Neotropics it is represented by a sole species – E. alta. The aim of the presented study was to evaluate the difference between ecological niches occupied by American and African populations of this species based on the ecological niche modeling. The similarity between the glacial and present niches occupied by E. alta was calculated and the factors limiting the species occurrence were identified. Areas of seasonal tropical forest, tropical savanna and woodland served as refugia for the studied species during last glacial maximum and they were more widespread in Neotropics than in Africa. No significant niche shift after last glacial maximum was observed. The distribution of E. alta in its whole range is restricted mainly by temperature seasonality. The differences in the niches occupied by African and Neotropical populations of E. alta suggest preglacial disjunction of the species range and independent adaptation of both groups. Despite the significant range disjunction of E. alta the species is characterized by relatively high degree of niche conservatism.

Opis:
A study was conducted at the Department of Horticulture, KNUST, Kumasi from June to November, 2015 with the objectives to (i) determine the rate of ATONIK plant growth regulator (PGR) suitable for high yield of two varieties of hybrid rice (ii) determine the combined effects of PGR rates and varieties on the growth and yield performance of hybrid rice. A 2 x 5 factorial arrangement in randomized complete block design with three replications was used. The factors were varieties at two levels: Agra Rice and Jasmine 85 and PGR at five levels: ATONIK at 450 ml/ha, ATONIK at 500 ml/ha, ATONIK at 550 ml/ha, ATONIK at 0 ml/ha and GA3 at 60 ml/ha. Comparing the ATONIK rates with the GA3, ATONIK at 450 ml/ha resulted in a 14.3 % increase in the number of rice panicles. Application of ATONIK at 450 ml/ha, 500 ml/ha and 550 ml/ha resulted in 14.4%, 10.7% and 4.4% higher percentage of productive tillers, respectively, than that produced by GA3 at 60 ml/ha. ATONIK at 450 ml/ha application led to a 17.8 % increase in grain yield. For the harvest index, application of ATONIK at 450 ml/ha resulted in the highest harvest index of 45 %, significantly greater than the other PGR treatments. In conclusion, the study clearly demonstrated that ATONIK PGR was superior to GA3 in the vegetative and productive performance of rice. The most suitable rate of ATONIK for increased rice productivity was 450 ml/ha.
