Opis:
Countless people and organisations have been wrestling with the practical application of sustainability and sustainable development. Yet there is no rigorous and unequivocal template that can be followed for management because the meaning of the key concepts of sustainability and development in particular haven’t been properly identified. Although the fundamental meaning of the word sustainability is continuance, the concept has its controversies especially when it drifts into the ‘abstract’ and even becomes confused with sustainable development. For our purposes it is the ability of development and of its associated processing activities to continue that is being managed. For management effectiveness, a system framework is necessary but more importantly what goes into that system has to be rigorously and unambiguously defined. In our case, the mechanisms describing the practicalities that govern the sustainability of development have been clearly identified in this paper and called by name. The concept of development needs clarification, while the accepted popular ‘three pillar’ depiction of sustainable development is also fundamentally flawed when compared with the form of words of the ’Brundtland‘ definition. This well-known ‘Venn representation’ implies a type of ‘balance’ or ‘synergy’ at the heart of sustainability management. In fact, because of the fundamentally unsustainable nature of current development processes, the ‘balance’ turns into a trade-off amongst the three sustainability players. For real sustainable development there can be no such trade-off. Once the misunderstandings are clarified the true basics of sustainability and sustainable development are fed into a standard ISO14001 iteration loop for management to commence.

Opis:
In order to keep up with the trend and satisfy the Internet users, it is crucial for the online businesses to adapt to new technologies and offer the right services (shop, bank online, etc.) to their customers. To anticipate customer needs, the online businesses use customer behaviour analysis and process customer data. Even if companies handle customer information (e.g. PII is considered highly confidential and must be protected accordingly) to anticipate and meet customers’ expectations, the management often struggles finding the right approach in making informed decisions when talking about information security of such data. This can threaten the sustainability of the business and put its customers at major risks (e.g. identity theft), risks that decision makers of companies do not see, or do not understand, the results being they do not invest properly to secure the data they handle. This paper gives a parallel overview between:a)    the management priorities of an online business that handles customer data and b)    the implicit information technology and security threats that those priorities generate.Once we have a view around point a) and point b), the paper will also show potential ways of finding a right balance between business needs, regulatory requirements and security of customer data so that the business can take risks to achieve their goals in an informed manner, using a customised risk assessment methodology, based on COBIT5 framework, industry leading standards and potential internal customised processes.

Idea zrównoważonego rozwoju od początku narodzin tej idei ponad 25 lat temu budziła duże emocje. Najpierw była to nadzieja, że oto ludzkość staje przed szansą rozwiązania swoich odwiecznych problemów. Później – w związku z dość nikłymi rezultatami w zakresie wdrożenia zrównoważonego rozwoju w życie – zaczęły się budzić uczucia frustracji i zawodu. W niniejszym artykule autor podejmuje próbę systematyzacji pojawiających się teoretycznych stanowisk wobec tej idei i zaprezentować konkretne ich przykłady, dokonując jednocześnie wstępnej ewaluacji.
The idea of sustainable development since the beginning of the birth of this idea over 25 years ago aroused high emotions. First, it was the hope that humanity had a chance to resolve its perennial problems. Then – due to the low levels results in the implementation of sustainable development in real life – feelings of frustration and disappointment began to arise. In this article the author makes an attempt to systematize the emerging theoretical positions on this idea and present specific examples, while making an initial evaluation.

Opis:
Purpose: The dynamic economic changes in recent years have made the principles of sustainable development gain more and more importance and there is a great need to maintain a balance in the social, environmental, and economic dimensions. This has also been observed in project management, whereby the concept of sustainable project management plays an important role in both practice and science. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in scientific publications on the concept of sustainable project management. The article presents the assumptions of sustainability in a project and the identification of research directions in this area. The study aims to present the results of the literature review and answer the two research questions: which research areas related to sustainable project management dominate the literature and what are the further research directions in the field of sustainable project management? Design/methodology/approach: The study was conducted based on a literature review in the field of sustainable project management and sustainability in project management. Scientific articles indexed in the Scopus database, published before 2022, were used. A keyword analysis was carried out, on the basis of which subject areas related to sustainable project management were distinguished, and the most cited articles were reviewed to extract recommendations for the directions of future research. Findings: The literature review, taking into account sustainable project management, show that project lifecycle, project success, and risk management are dominated research topic in the articles. Further research directions suggested in the literature indicate, inter alia, to extend the scope of research on sustainable project management to different countries and sectors. Originality/value: The literature review is based on the most recent publications. Moreover, in addition to the traditional literature review, keywords were analyzed and other research directions were analyzed, which was rarely seen in publications that focused mainly on the synthesis of conclusions.

Sustainable resources utilization is very actual issue considered in three dimensions: economic, social and environmental. Products end-of-life management is a key element of sustainable development. Automotive industry is a big supplier of different kinds of waste. End-of-life vehicles are becoming problem in most of the Member Countries. Poland is a country with one of the oldest vehicles feet in EU. It results in a growing trend of the number of old and worn cars, which need to be dismantled and recovered. The objective of this paper is to present an assessment of sustainability in disassembly station. Authors present theoretical background of research, case study description and complex analyses of dismantling process in one of the biggest dismantling stations in Poland with application of following tools: VSM maps, diagram SIPOC and RPA method. The analysis allows to identify main problems which exist in this field and to propose some improvement measures in order to improve the sustainability of dismantling operations

The traditional salt production in Indonesia was investigated to report the preparation and processing of salt, determine the characteristics of sea water and bittern as well as explore the potential of bittern management with appropriate technology. Field study and comprehensive analysis were performed so as to better understand the salt making, providing valuable information for the proposal of targeted management strategies in salt quality improvement and wastewater recovery. The results show that Na+, Cl and Ca2+ in East Java Province seawater were found greater than the majority of values found in the literature. The highest concentrations of Na+, Cl and Ca2+ were measured in Camplong-Sampang District. The highest concentrations of Mg2+ and trace metals were recorded in Panceng-Gresik District. The trace metals found in sea water and bittern need particular concern to be removed without disposing of sea water minerals. The potential number of bittern in Indonesia promoted the development of the bittern management for magnesium recovery and achieving marine environment sustainability. High purified material recovery can be achieved by using crystallization technology.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between sustainable performance and risk management, whereby sustainability (innovation), interdisciplinarity and leadership give new insights into the traditional perspectives on performance and risk management in the field of accounting and finance. DESIGN/METHOD: A number of 58 cases were collected. Due to the substantiated selection, 51 unique cases were used for the data analysis. Using the cases, the researchers built a database with fixed observation categories to operationalize the theoretical framework. This database contains data on widespread characteristics of an organization, strategic characteristics (mission, vision, value proposition, core values from the Balanced Score Card categories, and strategic goals), strategy characteristics of the sustainability strategies, the 17 sustainability goals of the UN, risks (from the COSO Integrated framework: strategic, financial, operational) and control measures appropriate to the risks. RESULTS/FINDINGS: The empirical research shows that if organizations have a mission and/or vision that includes sustainability, in more than half of the cases it is used in strategic goals and core values. However, this is far from happening in every organization. These organizations more often apply a sustainability strategy, and all pursue SDGs. It therefore seems that they use sustainable terms less often in the management of the company than they use in practice in the execution of the strategy. This pattern is evenstronger among organizations that have not included sustainability criteria in the mission and/or vision: 60% pursue a sustainability strategy and three quarters pursue SDGs. Organizations that do not pursue a sustainability strategy do pay attention to sustainability in almost half of the cases when managing the organization. Conversely, unfortunately, not every organization that implements a sustainability strategy also propagates this via its mission/vision, strategic goals, and core values. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: Researchers have investigated (part 1) whether implementing a sustainability criterion in a mission/vision has consequences for managing the organization based on sustainable strategic goals and core values; and (part 2) if a company pursues SDGs and/or a sustainability strategy, sustainability criteria are mentioned in the strategic characteristics.

Seaports and cities are internally linked, and the port can have a strong influence on the city, especially in the environmental aspect. Port authorities around the world are striving for greener forms of port management to adapt to state policy and to increase their economic and environmental competitiveness. The introduction of the concept of sustainable development in the port can stimulate the creation of green cities. This paper uses a case study to analyze the sustainable development in the Twin Port of Bremen. The aim is to distinguish the green port’s impacts that can stimulate the development of the green city concept. It is shown that the port development stimulates GDP growth, increases employment, urban infrastructure development, and the overall enrichment of port cities. Using the presented analysis of the green port, the most important affecting factors are proposed.

Environmental protection has increasingly adopted economic dimensions, and the environment is treated as a “capital” that can be used for economic and social development. This capital must be preserved for future generations, which is why increasing attention has been paid to taking pro-ecological actions to protect the environment. In order to improve the quality of the environment, it is necessary to make various types of investments in it. The Sustainable Development Initiative assumes that the economic growth of countries should be implemented in a manner consistent with the natural conditions of nature. The aim of this study was to identify and present the current possibilities of financing sustainability in Poland after joining the European Union, taking into account the risk of undertaking such an investment.

of action; namely, “corporate sustainability.” Corporate social responsibility can be embedded in (or fostered by) value-based management. In any case, adopting CSR as a part of a firm’s strategy and operations requires changed standards for decision-making. Decision-makers face the challenge of following tangible and intangible goals of multiple stakeholders. This study provides insights into how multi-criteria decision tools can be harnessed to operationalize CSR. The method applied in the article is a systematic international literature review. The findings suggest that papers aimed at using MCDM to enhance CSR management are mostly newer publications. Three important research avenues have emerged. In the first avenue, MCDMs are seen and used to enhance managerial decisions where a number of heterogenic goals must be achieved. The second avenue is where MCDMs are seen and used to evaluate a firm’s quantitative and qualitative outcomes in terms of values created for multiple stakeholders. The third trend is connected with sustainable supply-chain management.

This study aims to examine the relationship of the three characteristics of the board of directors (board size, board independence, and CEO duality) as part of good corporate governance mechanism and its effects on the level of sustainability report disclosure with moderating effect of audit committee. This study underpins Signalling Theory to analyze and explain the role of corporate governance and their association with the management level of disclosure of sustainability report. In this study, 106 samples were taken from 35 companies listed at Indonesia Stock Exchange which disclose sustainability report using GRI G4 during 2013-2017 periods. Board size and board independence was found to have significant negative relationship with the level of sustainability report disclosure. Furthermore, the findings show that the audit committee strengthen the moderating effect of the relationship between board size, CEO duality, and the level of sustainability report disclosure, but weaken the moderating effect of the relationship between board independence and the level of sustainability report disclosure.
Niniejsze badanie stanowi podstawę teorii sygnalizacji do analizy i wyjaśnienia roli ładu korporacyjnego i ich związku z poziomem zarządzania ujawnianiem raportu zrównoważonego rozwoju.
