Opis:
Soils derived from Awi sandstone formation in Awi, Akamkpa LGA of Cross River State, Nigeria were studied along a toposequence with a view to classifying them taxonomically, assessing their potentials and suggesting appropriate management strategies. Three profiles were dug at the crest, middle slope and lower slope of the landscape. The morphological properties of these soils: colour, soil structure, soil consistence, drainage, boundaries and root inclusions were recorded in the field. These soils were deep (>100 cm), with sandy loam surface texture over sandy clay to sandy clay loam subsurface textures. These soils had hues of 10 YR - 5 YR with sub angular blocky structure and a sticky consistence (wet) and bulk density of 1.0 - 1.7 g/cm3 with total porosity of 22 - 38 %. Soil reactions in H2O were acidic (pH 4.7- 5.8). These soils have Organic Carbon of 14.4 - 38.1 g/kg; total nitrogen 1.2 - 3.3 g/kg; available phosphorus 4.1- 8.3 mg/kg; exchangeable acidity (H+) 0.5 - 11.9 cmol/kg; Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) 2.0 - 6.0 cmol/kg and base saturation 20.0 - 52.5 %. The soils were classified according to the USDA Soil Taxonomy as Typic Kandiudults and correlated as Dystric Acrisols as per FAO- WRB for soil resources. It is recommended that soils fertility management practices should focus on reducing leaching of basic cations from the soils through mulching, planting of cover crops, crop rotation, adoptions of zero tillage as well as planting of acid tolerant crops and application of liming materials to reduce the strong acidity in these soils.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to analyse the potential of production and utilization of biochar as a marketable product in agriculture for Turkey. Towards this aim, the distribution of ar- able land, crop residues and soil types of Turkey were identified. The biochar production potential was evaluated depending on prominent residual biomass streams in Turkey. In addition, how much biochar would be needed for arable soil types found in Tur- key was estimated according to previous studies which investi- gated the effect of biochar on similar soil taxonomy and/or plant grown. Total crop production is focused on southern, western and central Anatolia, although the arable lands of Turkey prevail in seven regions. The residues of wheat, barley, corn and cotton stalk, tea, banana, hazelnuts and forest were found to be higher than other residuals in different regions and they could be suitable for biochar production. Furthermore, it was highlighted that the low water holding capacity of soil, alkalinity, salinity and soil pollution impeded the crop productivity. Although, the biochar produced from prominent residues was one-fiftieth less than that of total estimated amount of biochar needed for arable soils, it ob- viously improves the plant growth and soil characteristics, when used together with fertilizer, especially for zonal and intrazonal soils. At this point, it could be focused on the long-term field ex- periments due to determine the special and productive addition rate of biochar for Turkey, and biochar addition to the soil could be channelled into threatened priority arable lands by the public authorities.

Opis:
Using standard morphological methods, we describe two new Leptopharynx species, each discovered in a specific biogeographic region and habitat. Leptopharynx bromeliophilus nov. spec., a minute species (25 × 20 μm) discovered in tanks of bromeliads from Jamaica, is small-mouthed and has a slightly concave preoral region, an average of 27 basal bodies in kinety 4, and a total of 142 basal bodies on average. Leptopharynx australiensis nov. spec., a comparatively large species (40 × 25 μm) discovered in jungle soil of Australia, is large-mouthed and has a distinctly oblique preoral region, widely spaced kinetids in kinety 1, a total of 184 basal bodies on average, and the oral primordium is inside of a cortical fold thus appearing right of the posterior end of kinety 1. Four new features are recognized for distinguishing Leptopharynx species: (1) to have a monomorphic (producing either small- or large-mouthed cells) or polymorphic (producing microstomes and macrostomes) life cycle; (2) the spacing of the kinetids in kinety 1 as either ordinary or wide; (3) the shape (flat or concave) and angle (≤ 15° slightly oblique, ≥ 40° distinctly oblique) of the preoral region; and (4) the total number of basal bodies, which has proven statistically.

Opis:
Nitrogen fixing bacteria have been used for centuries to improve the fertility of agricultural soils. Since the introduction of inorganic nitrogen (N) fertiliser that provides a reliable boost to crop yields whilst reducing land and labour requirements, the use of biological nitrogen fixation has been in decline. Recently, concerns have been expressed about the sustainability of inorganic N fertiliser application, however, there remain doubts about whether N2 fixing bacteria alone can provide agriculture with sufficient fixed N to feed a burgeoning global population. In this paper we review the current state of our knowledge regarding those diazotrophic bacteria that have a role to play in agriculture. We focus on our current areas of research, particularly, the importance of understanding the classification and mechanism of action of N2 fixing bacteria that are used in agricultural soils. We discuss the applications of N2 fixing bacteria that illustrate their potential to provide sustainable N, particularly focussing on Australian and South American agricultural systems where these bacteria are widely exploited to maintain soil fertility. We also identify problems with the use of bacteria as inoculants, including ineffective inoculation due to poor quality preparation, the use of appropriate isolates and issues with sustainability. We review the outlook for biological N fixation highlighting how molecular biology may enable the expression of N fixation in non-leguminous crops.

Opis:
Porównywano zespoły larw Diptera w glebach Lasu Wolskiego i przyległej do niego łąki.
The groups of Diptera larvae living in soils of both the Wolski forest and the neighbouring meadow were compared. Taking into account the results of five-year studies the differences in groups of larvae were observed which concerned the following areas: 1. the density - per 1 sq. m of forest soil 555 individuals were observed whereas in the meadow soil only 129 were present; 2. biomass state - larvae of the Wolski forest soil were characterized by definitely greater biomass (89.51 mg DM) than those living in the meadow soil (139.64 mg DM); 3. average individual weight of larvae - those living in forest soil were heavier (1.51 mg DM) than those of meadow soil (1.08 mg DM); 4. diversity of larvae - in meadow soil the representatives of 17 families were detected whereas in the forest soil only 14 were present; 5. domination structure in biomass - in trophic structure of the larvae group in the Wolski forest phytosaprophages (46.6%) dominated whereas in the larvae group of meadow soil predators (53.8%) prevailed. Many authors reported the differences in the groups of Diptera larvae in forest and meadow localities. However, the results obtained in the research denote significant discrepancy and they may indicate weaker influence of antropogenic pressure on the soil of Wolski forest than on the adjacent meadow soil. At the same time, domination of predator larvae biomass in trophic structure of the group of larvae in meadow soil may indicate the wilderness of meadow.
