Opis:
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) is a plant belonging to the Elaeagnaceae family. It is widely distributed throughout Asia, and Europe, especially in colder regions. Generally, sea buckthorn species vary in their phytochemical composition, depending on the climate, and soils in which they grow. Sea buckthorn has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, due to its rich chemical composition. The leaves, fruits, and seeds of this plant are a rich source of bioactive compounds, such as vitamins (A, E, K, C, B1, B2), phenolic compounds (e.g gallic acid, catechin, quercetin, kaempferol), fatty acids (e.g linoleic acid, α-linolenic acid, palmitoleic acid, vaccenic acid), amino acids (e.g glycine, isoleucine, cysteine, tyrosine, histidine, arginine), micro-, and macroelements. The presence of a large number of bioactive compounds results in a broad spectrum of biological activity. It has been shown that sea buckthorn has antioxidant, and anti–inflammatory properties, moreover it protects, and regulates cellular metabolism, has cardioprotective properties, and protective effect on skin cells. Research from recent years offers the hope that sea buckthorn preparations will be used in the treatment of, for example, skin burns, atopic dermatitis or abnormal cholesterol levels, but also as a support for the treatment of, for example, cardiovascular diseases.

Opis:
Sprouts consumption is increasing worldwide due to their nutritional and health benefits. However, they can be sources of foodborne bacterial diseases, including sprout-related outbreaks caused primarily by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of a dried sea buckthorn fruit extract in sanitization of contaminated radish seeds. The efficacy of 15-min seed treatment and 3-h soaking in the extract solution was evaluated in comparison to the treatment with 20,000 mg/L calcium hypochlorite, recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The effect of the sea buckthorn fruit extract on radish seed germination capacity and the profile of phenolic compounds in the extract were also determined. Decontamination effect of the extract after a 15-min seed treatment ranged from 72.1% against Staphylococcus aureus to 93.0% against Listeria monocytogenes and was higher than that of active chlorine against E. coli, S. aureus and Salmonella enterica. Soaking seeds for 3 h in the extract increased the decontamination efficiency only against S. aureus (81.9%). Compared to water, after 4 days of sprouting, no significant differences were found in radish seed germination capacity and the length of roots and hypocotyls of sprouts. The sea buckthorn fruit extract had a high content of phenolic compounds, namely isorhamnetin 3-rhamnosylglucoside (12.99 mg/L), isorhamnetin 3-rutinoside (8.25 mg/L), protocatechuic acid (5.43 mg/L), isorhamnetin 3-glucoside (3.41 mg/L), and gallic acid (3.36 mg/L). The extract can be used as a substance limiting bacterial contamination of radish seeds and, as a result, sprouts, as well as a valuable source of phenolic compounds.

Opis:
Long distance dispersal is a key process occurring in plant communities and is particularly important for pioneer species like sea-buckthorn (Hippophaë rhamnoides L.) which survival strongly depends on colonizing newly created post-disturbance habitats. Sea-buckthorn, a cluster-forming shrub, is commonly used in Poland in the reclamation of soil-less areas devastated the by mining industry and for these areas a generative expansion of planted populations is usually observed. The main objective of this study was to assess the long-distance dispersal of this species in areas previously disturbed by industrial activity. Our observations were made on a 223.75 ha large section of the internal waste heap of the Bełchatów lignite mine, Central Poland. The area was colonized by sea-buckthorn specimens originating from a population planted on the nearby external waste heap. During the search for newly established sea-buckthorn clusters, their position and size were recorded and the preferences for specific site conditions were assessed using the Ivlev's electivity index. New specimen were observed at distances between 600 m and 3600 m from their potential seed source. The mean cluster density was 1.37 ha-1. The observed pattern of long distance dispersal is linked with to behavior of frugivorous birds. The largest cluster densities were observed along ditches (9.83 ha-1) and on open areas with less developed plant cover, while the lowest cluster density occurred in afforested areas (0.51 ha-1). Poor sandy substrate reduced the probability of plant establishment compared to richer loamy sands. There appeared to be no influence of slope aspect on the probability of sea-buckthorn establishment.
